5 Things That I Want To See In 40k This Year

Posted by johnnya10 on 04/01/2018
Posted in: Thoughts and Comment. Tagged: 2018. 7 Comments

You ever feel like you’ve written the same blog post already before? I’m sure I wrote an article like this last year, and, as I have no intention of trawling through all my ancient drivel, I’m not sure if much has changed here or not. Well, maybe the ending. Anyway, here is my list of the 5 things I want for 40K in 2018.

1: The Storm Has Gathered – Now What

gathering storm books

With the recent releases of the Blood Angels and Dark Angels codices, we’ve learned even more about our gradually progressing galaxy and things are looking very interesting indeed. The Sons of Sanguinius were almost obliterated but now look set to become one of the strongest bastions of human defence as their ranks swell with new Primaris warriors. Meanwhile, the Dark Angels are even more obsessed with their hunt for the fallen, especially considering what’s happened to Luther… What’s more, there are still questions from the original Gathering Storm books to be answered, and that’s why I want to see what happens next in a big way. Guilliman is charging all over the place, duking it out with his brothers, but surely we’ll be getting an even bigger, in-depth look into the goings on in our new 41st Millennium by the end of the year. AoS is getting the big treatment at the moment with Malign Portents, but when all of the Codex books have been updated, we need to know more about the Indomitus Crusade. Will another brother return? Will the mysteries of Cypher’s sword be revealed? What else lurks in Trazyn’s vaults? And what of the Ynnari? All will hopefully be revealed.
2: Some Seriously Big Kits
knight vs knight
We’ve been enjoying a time of skirmish and small-model-count or entry level games of late, with Necromunda, Shadow War, Shade Spire and Blood Bowl dominating the release schedules, but I’m getting hungry for some classic 40k, bigger is better, type kits. Only a year or so ago, we were coming out of a period where everything was bigger and better than before, with Imperial Knights, Wraith Knights, and Gork-(and indeed Mork)-anauts among many other kits. Things have been a little smaller of late, and while I doubt I’ll be painting anything too big, it would be good to see some more Apocalyptic scale kits join the shelves. I’m not sure what’s left to do, or what they could dream up, but perhaps some sort of giant Mechanicum crawler/weapons platform, or a Nurgle Plague Tower (seeing as Nurgle seem to be the big draw these days) – anything massive and monstrous would do. It helps to remind us of the crazy scale that can help to make 40k so much fun.
3: Pl*st*c S*st*rs
reset the clock gif
I’m not going to say the actual words, because we all know what happens when we do (see attached GIF). But given the release of Celestine, and given the clamour that is only growing for them (when the big survey was launched by the Community team late last year, this was apparently on everyone’s wish list), it would be good if this particular army did finally get the update we’ve all been asking for. I’d love to paint up a squad to show people are still into them, but when a 20 year old ten model unit costs £50 and is made of metal, I’m in no rush to do so. They really do seem to be the one missing part of the Imperial puzzle at the moment, and even the Community team have been teasing us about them for a few months now. Will 2018 finally be the year where the army that rhymes with “Madepta Bororitas” (or, as I prefer to think of them, “Fisters Of Prattle”) gets some love?
4: Broken Record Time
jb_slaanesh
Yes, my favourite moan. Slaanesh. *cue eye rolling from everyone who reads this blog – some people slam their laptop shut – faint sounds of weeping* We’re getting to the point where we’re most likely to find out the fate of the least favoured God in the Chaos pantheon. Khorne smashed their way into a revival back when WFB was still a thing. Tzeentch has new minis too, and we’re about to get yet another big swathe of Nurgle-themed miniatures. All that’s left is the pink-headed stepchild who has for too long been beaten like a rented seeker. Already banished by the Aelves in AoS, and under threat from the Ynnari in 40K, Slaanesh has been clinging to her status as a functioning deity for what seems like some time now, and there have been very few rumours to suggest that she’ll be getting any love any time soon. Whispers of mounted noise marines and a new Keeper of Secrets have fizzled out and died over the last couple of years, and but for a few mentions of Fulgrim returning in The Gathering Storm, there’s not been much to grasp at. In 2018, one way or the other, I think we’re going to be getting our biggest indication as to whether Slaanesh is slithering off for good or, hopefully, not.
5: I Don’t Know
Question_Mark
This is a weird one really. I was going to talk about Chaos Primaris Marines, or learning the fate of the Space Wolves, or even ditching the now-tragic old sculpts (Poor Ragnar Blackmane) that still litter the product ranges, but that all felt like a bit of a rehash of the above. The fact is that 40K feels so new to me at the moment, that I don’t really know what I want. More global campaigns? Sure. Why not. I doubt I’ll take part in them, but they seem to be largely enjoyed by others. A new army? Of course. Why not. I mean, we can barely cope with what we have but it would be cool to see something Xenos and new come out. The rebirth of the Emperor? Why not (again). It would shake things up a bit. But this is what I’m talking about; there’s so much going on that it’s almost too much to get your head around. That’s not a complaint at all – 40k has never felt this busy and vibrant, and I’m loving that, but as I’ve spent less time in the core game over the last year, it’s hard for me to think about what we don’t have when it’s almost impossible to comprehend what we do have. Ask me in a month or so, and I probably still won’t know! This is a golden age for GW and 40K, but some of us are getting a little blinded by the sheen. Happily blinded, but blinded nonetheless.
How about this – you pick the fifth thing here. Apart from what I’ve already mentioned, why don’t you name what you’d like to see in 40K in 2018. Put a comment below and help me out with this article. Seriously – I need some ideas here!
I look forward to reading about what you want GW to do with our distant and grimdark future. In the meantime, I hope all of your hobby-related wants and dreams come to fruition this year. Onwards!

The Original Noise Marine

original noise marine

Awww, yeah! Everyone, I’d like you to meet my very own Original 1991 Noise Marine! After looking for this miniature for years, I finally found it on Ebay, and after a torturous week-long auction, he finally became mine. And when it came to painting it, I couldn’t think of anything better than a slightly updated version of the original paint job to do it justice. Let’s take a closer look, at the miniature that I have always wanted to paint.

First of all though, let’s take a look at the original Eavy Metal mini from all of those years ago that I saw in the colour-section of the 2nd Ed 40K Rule Book. Here it is alongside the above image:

original noise marine redone

I saw that guy and it sold me on Slaanesh, Noise Marines and 40k in general. I was in love, but I never saw it in a store all those years ago. If memory serves, he was only ever available for a couple of years back in the days of lead miniatures. So when it came to redoing it, I wanted to do a very similar job with just a couple of updates. Firstly, starting at the bottom, I gave him a slightly more grimdark base. The rock acts like a little stage for our axe-man, and there’s even a skull that looks like he’s singing along down there.

I made the leopard print a little more leopard like, put a bit more shadow into the hair, added a Slaaneshi symbol to one of the shoulders, and used a more modern Noise Marine backpack – the old Chaos packs are hard to come by, and they don’t look great in all honesty. Other than a few tiny changes across the model, I tried to keep it as faithful to the original as possible.

80s metal noise marine

After painting more sombre, earthy tones on recent miniatures, it was a joy to go nuts with all the paints at my disposal. I swear at one point, probably while I was doing the hair, I got a headache from all the colours (though that may have had something to do with licking the paintbrush and this being a lead miniature, but whatever). I think this is what’s called an eye-bleeder.

What I think is really weird is that this miniature, to me at least, doesn’t look totally out of place. Yes, he does look ridiculous, but he’s not so ridiculous that you couldn’t see him blasting people apart with his guitar-gun. Ok, now I hear it. But whether he looks suitable for the grimdark or not, he does look cool (provided your definition of cool is an up-armoured member of the rock band Poison) and that’s all I asked for.

slaanesh noise marine rear

Regarding the backpack, it’s kind of the good thing about the current Noise Marines being such an old sculpt, is that it fits in with this even older sculpt. And the demon head speakers definitely lend themselves to the heavy metal feeling of the overall miniature. That being said (presses play on the broken record player) some new noise marines would be nice (anyone from GW reading this, take note).

The leopard print is done using a method I’ve used several times before, and regular readers will recognise it from older projects. I’ve had a couple of requests over the years, and if I get the time, I’ll do a short tutorial piece on how to achieve the look. At some point. No promises.

crazy noise marine

And that’s that done. I can’t tell you how much fun it was to paint this miniature, or how happy I am with the result. If I had an army of these guys, I’d be in painting heaven, though I now feel the need to get on an do something a little more sombre, but I want to retain some of the flamboyance from this work. Let’s see what happens next.

It’s always good to bring in the new year with some fireworks, and nothing has more colours and craziness than the original Noise Marine. I think I’ve done him justice, and if someone asked me to paint another one, I wouldn’t hesitate (though it might take me a while to find another guitar-wielding lead miniature, so bear that in mind). I’m off to go listen to AC/DC and WASP, while I cover my head with a whole can of hairspray. Onwards!

Goodbye 2017, Hello 2018 – Heresy & Heroes In The New Year

Posted by johnnya10 on 27/12/2017
Posted in: Silliness and Stuff. 3 Comments

Heresy & Heroes has been a lot of fun to work on in 2017, and I want to have just as much fun with it in 2018. What’s more, you’ve all been reading, liking and enjoying the posts and pages here, and we definitely want that to continue, right? So, rather than review everything that’s happened in 2017, I’m looking ahead to the future (and because I barely remember half of it), and I wanted to give you lot a quick update on that. A preview, if you will.

What You Can Expect

In short, more of the same with a few sprinkles on top. 2017 started off with me heavily entrenched in my Blood Angels Legion project, and as 2018 is more than likely to bring us a Forge World book and miniatures introducing the Sons of Sanguinius to the table top, I’ll be onboard with that. As I’m going to a Horus Heresy (and Necromunda) weekender in February, I’m hoping that I see a bit more evidence of this in the flesh/resin. Imagine if they have Sanguinius on a little plinth in a cabinet there! I’ll be squealing like a stuck squig.

blood angels veteran tactical squad

I’m still nuts for Necromunda too, and there’s plenty for me to do there. I have and Escher gang that I need to start on, and I’m hoping to bring you some game and campaign reports too – we’ll see about that. Bounty hunters, hive scum, NPCs and lots more will hopefully all pass across my table in the new year as well. I’ve got some very fun conversion ideas that I’ve already picked up a few bits for, so I’m really looking forward to working on those.

Necromunda Wyrd

And there will be all the random characters, retro miniatures, wish lists, reviews and a few pop culture nods that you’d expect from this place. Retro miniatures is an area I want to focus on a bit more, as they’ve provided a lot of satisfaction over the last year. And the random ones of course; what will be 2018’s Pickle Rick?

The Sprinkles

I also want to try some new things here. Maybe it’s time we heard a few more voices on these pages, and that this blog had a couple more features too. We shall see, but this is also a good time for you to tell me what you want to see. Should I be doing more of something? Less of something? Do you have any ideas of something else you’d like to see me do? Do you fear change and cower in the corner at the slightest alteration of the norm? All suggestions will be considered, so shoot me your best ones in the comments section below.

sprinkles

And at some point, and I make no promises here, I may even try a few characters from armies I’ve never tried before. I may make some things specifically for Golden Demon competitions – we shall have to wait and see. I may even get back to my Warhou …never mind. The point is, there’ll be plenty of newness going on around here as well as all the things you enjoy about this blog.

A Message For 2018 – A Brief Bob Ross Moment

bob ross your world

Approach your hobby time like a treat. Over this year, I think I’ve enjoyed painting more than during any other year, though I’m not sure why. Focussing on smaller projects that I really care about has probably helped, but no matter what I’ve been working on, I couldn’t count the amount of times that I’ve been near giddy with anticipation at work for getting home and hunkering down over my paints an brushes. And I want you to enjoy your painting like that too. 2017 has been a rough year for all of us (some more than others) and your painting and gaming time should offer you a bountiful oasis in a storm of bad news, real life and all the horrors that assail us throughout the days, weeks and months. Treat the time at your desk or table as a respite from all of this, and a chance to really enjoy yourself, better yourself, and feel innocent and rapturous pride in your work.

One of my resolutions for 2018 is to play more. I lost the bug for playing games probably back in 2016, but with both Blood Bowl and Necromunda now out, I’m going to use these as gateway games to help me really get back into the swing of it all, and with the Blood Angels getting their book at some point, I want to give Horus Heresy a real go too. And that’s one of the great things about this hobby. There are always areas to be revived or explored for the first time. I challenge you to find an area of this pursuit that you have not devoted much time to in 2017, and spend some time on it. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to continue to do it, but you might find something new to do that you love doing.

So trying something new, and enjoying ourselves – that sounds like the perfect way to sign off on 2017 don’t you think? May 2018 bring you all the joy you could wish for, both within and without the world of your toy soldiers. May you learn valuable lessons, make friendships that will last a lifetime, and find all of the things that can make you happy. Thank you so much for reading Heresy & Heroes, and may the Dice Gods be forever on your side.

And One Last Thing…

Before I sign off, I can give you a quick clue as to what will be appearing on this blog soon. All I’ll say is this; It’s almost time to… KICK OUT THE JAMS!

Happy New Year! And, as ever; Onwards!

Goliath Leader & Campaign Gang

house goliath gang leader

It’s time to smash some stuff up with my Goliath gang leader completing the gang that I will take into my first Necromunda campaign. Bash ‘The Destroyer’ Bonebreaker is here to lead the Jagged Aggressors into the depths where his power hammer can cause maximum damage, if his combat shotgun doesn’t blast his enemies apart before he gets close enough. This hulking brute represents the end of my initial Goliath gang, as the six that are now done clock in at 995 credits with their added gubbins. What’s more, this allows me to create the warriors I need as campaigns go on, and take advantage of any weapons sprues that Forge World might be releasing in the future.

I went with the Power Hammer because it’s both fluffy and fantastic in a fight. It also looks brutal, and I decided to give it a weathered bronze look to set it apart from other weapons in the gang. And the respirator mask puts the leader out on his own as well. I had to chop and change the combat shotgun with the combi-plasma in order to get it onto the same mini as the hammer, but that was easy enough. And of course, as is now my signature with any leader, sergeant, boss, champion, etc, I added a lone skull to the base.

Untitled 2

I like the idea of this guy striding, unbowed and uncaring into the heart of the fray, blasting his enemies apart with shredding buckshot, before swinging that monstrous hammer to crush and cripple any foe foolish enough to try and take him in close combat. It takes advantage of the Goliath’s fantastic strength and the leader’s attack stats. And I really can’t decide which part of this miniature is my favourite, in terms of my painting. I’m very happy with both weapons and how they look, so maybe I’ll pick those as my highlight, but there are other bits I’m equally pleased with.

It’s been a really fun project to work on, and I look forward to expanding the gang in the future with more weapons and maybe even some juves (rumour has it that Forge World are working on this kit), but for the time being, and until my campaigns kick on, that’s this project done!

necromunda goliath gang

And so there are the Jagged Aggressors! Looking pretty good (if I do say so myself) in their initial iteration. My camera has just about been able to cope with all the metallics going on which is alright, though they do of course look better in the flesh. I’ll be returning to them a few times in 2018 I dare say, but from this little project alone, the Necromunda miniatures get a huge thumbs up from me. A joy to paint.

Next up from me, well, I have a few smaller projects I want to work on (there’s some very exciting things coming), and then eventually, I’ll crack on with the Eschers. In other news, I’m off to the Heresy/Necromunda weekender in early February, so I’ll be picking up whatever’s new from there, and will of course be reporting from the event as well. Stay tuned for  all of that, but in the meantime, I hope you have a great week of painting. Onwards!

The Top 5 Heresy & Heroes Posts Of 2017

Posted by johnnya10 on 14/12/2017
Posted in: Uncategorized. 2 Comments

Is it really that time of year again? As we hurtle into 2018, (more by luck than design, one feels these days), it’s time again for me to reflect on another year of Heresy & Heroes. This blog will be entering its 6th year (!!) in 2018, and over the course of 2017, this blog has had well over 40,000 visits, which is a rather auspicious number if ever there was one. Well, that happened a while back, so it’s more by now, but this was the first time that this blog crossed that line in a year. Huzzah!

But what have you all been reading? In what has now become a Heresy & Heroes tradition, I’m taking a bit of time here to tell you what were the top five most popular posts published here in 2017. What’s more, I’ll throw in my personal favourite, and something from the first year (2013) too that will hopefully give you an idea of how far this site has come. So without any further ado, in reverse order, here are the Top 5 most popular H&H posts from this year…

5 – New Necromunda – What’s In The Box

Necromunda 2017 Box contents

Well, it’s certainly had a lot of us very excited, and we spent several months salivating over the prospect of descending into the Underhive once again, and as soon as images of the contents were released, Heresy & Heroes was there to bring you the shiny images, and talk you through the gubbins within. And what gubbins they turned out to be! Even with the shots in this article, we were all even happier when we finally cracked open the box itself. Less happy when half of us immediately lost the tiniest cigar ever, but happier again when we saw that this game has immediately been taken to heart by the community.

This game promises to bring us all a lot of enjoyment in 2018 with all the original gangs and more all turning up in the coming months – and yes, all will be reviewed here. Still though, it has to be said that the boxed set is a fantastic collection of rules, minis and more, and one we’ve rightly all been very happy to ogle.

4 – Know Your Necromunda – The Gangs Of The Underhive

necromunda original artwork

Don’t worry – not everything on this list is Necromunda-related, but this one (and its sister article about the other denizens of the Underhive) was a pleasure to write. I got to dive into a bit of nostalgia, look at some classic minis and illustrations, and try to get some jokes in too. Of course, the gangs have all received slightly updated fluff in the new showing, but this is a hopefully funny take on what I remember from the original incarnation of the game.

It’s always nice to do these sorts of articles, but I’m particularly happy with this one, so if you didn’t check it out the first time, I hope you get a chance to now.

3 – Chaos Space Marine Warband Name Generators

chaos space marine

It’s our third most popular post here, and I’m only surprised that it has taken this long to see the words ‘name generator’ appear in this list. There have been more than a few this year, but the boys from the Warp were, by a long margin, the most popular in this category of posts. If you’re looking for a new name for a Tzeentch, Slaanesh or Khorne warband, you can use the charts in this post to inspire you.

What was really fun though, was working with Dan from Ritual Miniatures (which looks like it’s going through a little bit of a rebuild at the time of writing this – not looking its best but I’m sure it will again soon) on some more randomly generated names from these spreadsheets. These aren’t up right now, but you’ll have to go beg Dan to recreate them if you want to see them again.

2 – Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition: New War Band/Chapter Name Generators

primaris marine chapter name generator

Shocking. Another name generator post makes this list? I am shocked. 😉 To coincide with one of the biggest events of the year – the release of 8th Edition 40K, I dusted off the ol’ spreadsheet and thesaurus again to come up with name generators for both Nurgle Marine and Primaris Marine armies. As ever, this was a lot of fun for me, and plenty of you seemed to really enjoy it too.

I remember being at Salute on the day 8th edition was announced and the excitement there was palpable. A few GW/FW personnel were there and they all stayed dutifully tight-lipped as they were probed by all around them. And I’m so glad they did keep schtum. The launch went fantastically, and with each reveal, things got even more exciting. So, caught up in all of that, these name generators were born, and I enjoyed creating them as ever.

1 – Pickle Rick in the 41st Millennium!

pickle rick space marine

It had to be, right? Well, it’s always nice to see some of my actual painting/modelling make it into this list each year, and what was undoubtedly one of the silliest miniatures created in 2017 (and by anyone, ever) and complete with equally silly rules,  has done just that. You all really enjoyed this, and the threads on Reddit, Facebook, Google+ and other social sites definitely showed that it was worth me spending a 3 day weekend swearing at two staples and a tiny lump of green stuff.

And how will I top that? We’ll have to see if I managed to do that in a year’s time. I doubt there’ll be another series of Rick & Morty between now and then, so my inspiration will have to come from somewhere else. Oh, and just so you know, despite this post being wildly popular, and easily the most popular post published in 2017, it wasn’t the most popular post on the site this year – that honour belongs to 2016’s Space Marine Chapter Name Generator, which just goes to show how popular that sort of post can be!

My Favourite – Our Desks: A Photo Essay

our desks - a photo essay

Oh, maybe I could have come up with a better layout for this, but I still love it. What was really nice, was working with and talking to painters around the world about their sacred spaces – their hobby desks. Seeing the range, the preferences and hearing about all of the stories behind them was an honour and a thrill for me. Gamers get to meet other gamers all the time, but aside from rare competitions and social media, us painters rarely get a chance to chinwag (as we prefer to sit, troll-like in our caves, licking paint, drinking brush water and swearing quietly under our breath) so that was fantastic.

It was a joy to do then, and it’s great to be able to flick through it all now. Next year, I’ll try and turn it into a coffee table book! No, actually, I doubt I will. But I would like to do another project like this where I bring a few more artists to the attention of you readers. We’ll have to wait to see what 2018 brings!

2013 Flash Back – Grey Knights

grey knight paladins

It’s a little sad that my Grey Knights have spent the last three years living in carry cases, seeing the light of day on only the rarest of occasions. I was well proud of this lot all those years ago, and they were the first army that I painted and thought – yeah, they’re good.

By my own standards these days, perhaps they’re a little old school now, but they still look ok next to more recent projects. These guys were used on the table top during what must have been 6th Edition and my Purifier-focussed force never really benefited too much from the infamous Ward-codex. They were a huge amount of fun to play with, and maybe I’ll crack them out for a game of 8th at some point next year. Will be interesting to see if my build can still deal some damage.

Read the post here.

=][=

So, there you have it. I’ll try and do a proper “Year in review” type of post soon too, though we’re fast running out of 2017 and as ever, things are insanely busy. Presents to buy, trips to plan, work to do, etc. Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed this brief look backwards – it’s been a great year. And now, as ever; Onwards!

The Jagged Aggressors – Goliath Champions

goliath champions

Turning up the heat in the Underhive, my new Goliath champions, Fraggorn Wrenchshouter, and Zaktarg Fragmaker are now complete and ready for action. With the kit’s coolest weapons options – including the controversial krumper (is its range too much of a problem?), they’re now ready to join the rest of the gang. Let’s take a look at the two big boys of the Jagged Aggressors gang.

goliath champion with krumper rivet cannon

Fraggorn is a true monster, hefting the beast of a weapon that is the krumper, along with an oh-so-useful combat knife strapped to his back. He’s a great looking mini, with that teeny-tiny cigar hanging from his lips, and a very nonchalant stance, he looks like a real menace. He was a fun miniature to work on, and that weapon does look super cool, even if its very short range might prove problematic in a game that isn’t using a zone mortalis-style setting. But hey, sometimes the rule of cool beats all.

The cigar wasn’t too much of a problem – I know there are a lot of stories about people losing that piece, but if you clip it (gently) and assemble it straight away, it’s really not an issue. And it was fun to get the colours right on that – you can’t really see it on the photos here, but I think I nailed the burning end’s oranges and greys pretty well. The combat blade is from the Betrayal At Calth box, and it’s nice and oversized which is perfect for this Goliath. And like all the others, he’s of course dressed in those utilitarian greys and browns.

goliath champion with renderizer

My favourite weapon in the whole Goliath kit has to be the Renderizer, and Zaktarg Fragmaker is wielding it with a grin. That axe would look amazing on a Chaos champion too, so I may save one to add into another army or onto a character at some point in the future. I really like the grinning face, and while you can’t quite spot it in these shots, I gave this champion silver teeth with a bloody red wash around them, just to make it extra menacing.

I gave him a couple of grenades – some more traditional frag grenades instead of the huge stick-bombs. They’re a cool bit, but I just couldn’t make them fit on this model in a way that looked good. I also added some snake chain to the base to represent some sort of power cable. I’m going to enjoy watching this chap pulverising his way across the battlefield.

john ashton goliath

And all of that leaves me with one more gang member to go before the Jagged Aggressors are ready for their first campaign. I’ve put the first few licks of paint onto my leader already, so stay tuned for him – he’ll be appearing on this blog soon. So with all of that done, I shall leave you to enjoy your own painting and modelling efforts. My your brushes never lose their points, and your paint pots never dry out. Onwards!

How To Paint Worn Leather – A Quick Tutorial

Posted by johnnya10 on 06/12/2017

goliath ganger with grenade launcher and brute cleaver

A few people have asked me how I put painted the trousers on my Goliath gangers. They’re in a worn leather style that’s perfect for coats, cloaks and more, especially if you don’t want to do shiny black or clean brown leather. So, I’ve put together a very quick, basic tutorial for these that you can use as a reference. Here goes…

Step 1: Undercoat – Rhinox Hide

how to paint worn leather miniatures tutorial

The Rhinox Hide spray is perfect for undercoating Necromunda miniatures. It’s a nice solid colour that can lend plenty of depth. I sprayed up all of my gangers with this before starting.

Step 2: Basing – More Rhinox Hide

painting leather on miniatures tutorial step 2

At the moment, you’re establishing a nice, uneven but matching base and while the spray is perfect for an overall undercoat, it is a tad darker and more matt than the Rhinox Hide that comes from the pot. Add the paint from the bottle to the areas that would get hit by light, but don’t be too neat with it – we want plenty of unevenness here.

Step 3: Wash – Agrax Earthshade

step 3 painting leather miniatures

The paint my spellcheck likes the least, add an all over coat. Be a little more liberal with this than you’d usually be with a wash, but only a little.

Step 4: Detail – Rhinox Hide / XV-88 (1:1 Blend)

painting leather

Here, you’re going to be doing a swirly, dry-brushing sort of action across the trousers. You only need a light touch, very little water (if any – the cardinal sin!) in your paint, and very little on your brush. So yeah, I could have just said drybrushing. I don’t know why I didn’t. I woke up at 4am today and listened to a disappointing cricket match so bear with me. Do that, here, and you’ll be good.

Step 5: Detail – XV-88

worn leather on miniatures

Now, you want to do similar to last time. Ensure you catch the raised areas and aim for the higher light catching parts again, but be more conservative with this one. Very dry drybrushing called for. And keep it a bit uneven too.

Step 6: Wash – Seraphim Sepia

miniatures in brown leather

Cover the whole lot in Seraphim Sepia. And you’re done! Let it dry and soon, it will look like this:

Well, the weapons and rest of the miniature won’t magically change into something completely different, but your mini’s trousers will look like they’re made from old, worn leather. Or cloak, hat, coat – whatever you’ve used this technique on.

I’m getting through my Goliath gang now, so expect more pictures of those guys soon. I hope you found this post useful, and that your own painting projects are coming along as you’d hoped or better. Onwards!

The Jagged Aggressors – Goliath Gangers

goliath gangers necromunda

My Goliath Gang for Necromunda is up and running, and the first three gangers are done. Say hello to Hulkras, Smargrill and Porgsmash of the Jagged Aggressors. Their names come straight from my name generator, and while I’m not the biggest fan of “Porgsmash”, I’ll stick to them for the rest of the project. Let’s take a closer look-see.

Being Goliath, and having a name like Jagged Aggressors, I wanted these guys to have a thoroughly utilitarian, industrial feel to them. Therefore, the colours are browns and greys, and there’s plenty of weathering too. In fact, their rusted armour reflects the rusted walkways that they’re standing on – as it was Goliaths that probably made those walkways in the first place.

Smargrill is the specialist of the gang and the first guy that I painted. He’s wielding that lovely grenade launcher and a brute cleaver – I really think it’s key for each Goliath to have a good close combat option as that’s where their strength really lies, but they need brutal ranged weapons to help get them there. It’s an important balance to get right. I’m really happy with the worn leather look on the trousers of all of these minis, and it was really fun to go a bit more over-the-top with the rust and verdigris. Normally I have to be quite restrained with the rust but with this lot, I let the paint brush have some fun.

Hulkras is next up, and his Spud Jacker shows how far I went with the rusting and weathering. I figured the Goliaths would put older tools to work as weapons as newer, better kept kit would be needed in the foundries. It’s a great looking bit though – GW did a great job with that. And in the top picture, you can see he has the jagged whitish line on his leg plate. This is the symbol of the gang, but I didn’t want to overuse it – these guys are all function first, and fancy details a distant second.

And here we have Porgsmash. If you think the gun looks a little bit different, that’s because it’s from the Ork grot kit. Turns out Goliaths and grots have a pretty similar taste in firearms. Actually, the one criticism I’d have of these kits is that the options don’t give you quite enough flexibility. Some weapons only appear on left hands, others on right hands. A bit limiting if you’re not too comfortable converting things. But other than that, it’s a cracking set of sprues and I’m loving this project.

Those are my gangers. Initially, I’m just building a six man gang as they’ll be going into a campaign in the new year, and I want to have options further down the line, especially if Forge World are going to be releasing some weapons sprues later on. Also, I want to get on to those Escher ladies at some point in the not too distant future.

Next up for me will be my Champions so expect those as the next painted pieces from me. I hope you enjoyed checking this lot out. Oh, and I should say that I tried the rainbow mohawk look for them, but it didn’t quite suit, whereas the red hair looks a lot better. But that’s enough from me. I hope you’re enjoying your painting as much as I am enjoying mine. Onwards!

Building The Underhive – How To Create Your Own Slice Of The Lower Levels

One of the real attractions of Necromunda, is the idea of campaigns. Yes, the Underhive boxed game is fun (I’ve had a couple of play throughs now and it is a genuinely enjoyable game), but it’s not the big draw for me. I, like so many of you, want to create a deep dark world for my gangs to run through, fight through and interact with. I want their homes, hovels, workshops, mines and more to be fleshed out, built up and given as much personality as the gangers themselves.

I will be playing through a campaign in the new year with my good ol’ buddy, Henry whose Esher gang are coming along rather wonderfully, as I struggle to find the time to work on my Goliaths. But more on the minis later. We’re just going to be doing a small, two player campaign, but I want it to have as much of a narrative as possible. I want to create the atmosphere, and give our little slice of the Underhive, on the borders of our gangs’ territories some real personality.
So, how do we start doing this? Well, as with so many things, the name can help to craft the identity of an area. And seeing as this blog may as well be called the ‘Sci Fi Name Generator Blog’ these days, I cracked open the spreadsheets yet again, and began to craft something a bit different.
This name generator helps you to name the areas of your own Underhive realm. Essentially, you get your trusty D6s out and roll on the D66 tables below for your random areas. Use one or two descriptors (I find one usually does, but mix it up as much as you like), and one of the Area Types. Add “The” before the name if it makes it sound better (some do, some don’t), and enjoy! Use it how you see fit, and there’s no harm in rerolling things – not everything sounds great so you enjoy it as you want to.

Now, for gang specific areas – perhaps where your gangs are starting off, you can use the Gang Specific Area types. Just a D6 for each of these, and add the descriptors you roll/like.

Define how many areas you need/want, and make a little map for your own reference. You can draw this, make the areas whatever shape you’d like, and create your world. In the below example, I’ve just taken an image (it’s actually the industrial dockside area of Antwerp, Belgium, taken from Google maps satellite view and grey-scaled) and used a basic image editor to create this:
example underhive segment for campaign
And straight away, the Underhive starts to come to life. The Lightless Stores are a particularly dark area of ancient, corroded storage containers, and sheds long abandoned and left. to the perpetual night. The Insect Stacks are bug-ridden, and full of carnivorous beasties of the invertebrate variety, while Golden Alley is a somewhat ironic name – a deal went down there long ago that made one man very rich and a lot of others very dead… And The Broken Tunnels lead to the rest of the Underhive, though they are full of pitfalls, rusted holes and treacherous gaps that have claimed many a ganger, and more dangers than you could imagine.
This is just a small campaign version played between two players, but you can go as big as you like:
large necromunda underhive campaign map
Create your own slice of the Underhive and give it all the personality you can. You can even tailor your boards to match the names on the map (as much as your terrain stash and budget will allow of course). I hope you get some use out of it all and enjoy playing around with it – I’ve had a lot of fun building it up actually – almost more than the gang name generators.
On a different note, I wanted to alert you to the fact that Heresy And Heroes is on Instagram – you can find my account right here. It’s not just miniatures; you’ll be treated to life drawing efforts (along with other doodles), random shots of London, my ugly mug and a lot of pubs too. But if you want to follow me on there, you can keep up to date with my miniatures efforts in a different way.

As you can see, my first Goliath is now done. I’ve not had a chance to properly photograph the first member of the Jagged Aggressors yet, but if you follow the Instagram Account, you’ll see when I do. Or of course, you can just keep your eyes on the blog. I hope you have a great weekend, and some fun gaming and painting times. Onwards!

House Orlock – Gang Revealed & Name Generators

The news from the Warhammer 40,000 Open Day is in and we’ve got a new gang to ogle for Necromunda. To pretty much no-one’s surprise, the Orlock gang will be appearing next with a full plastic kit. There was one interesting surprise though. The Orlocks have gone… well, hipster.

new orlock gangers

In an earlier post, I joked a little about how the Orlock gang bore some resemblance to characters like John Rambo. Double denim and bandanas – that sort of look. Well, such assertions can’t be made of the new Orlock gang (though they might still be rocking double denim but in a slightly more interesting way) who look far more like the sort of folk you see hanging around Shoreditch or Brixton, drinking oat-milk flat whites while talking about bands you’re not cool enough to know about as they play with their beards. If you’re not from the UK, you’ll surely have your own havens for people who like to ride old-timey bicycles, wear clothes that are so uncool they’re cool, and have their millionaire daddies buy them grotty flats in communities that they ruin.

In a true stroke of originality from GW, this look has been blended with that of ‘industrial miner’. And I have to say that I really like it. The Orlocks now have much more of an identity than they ever did, just going by looks alone, and the House of Iron have some very fancy toys to play with (including perhaps the best looking powerfist I’ve ever seen). The harpoon gun is pretty darn sexy too, even if the guy carrying it bears a striking resemblance to myself. Good looking mini, that. In fact the other chap in the below picture looks very much like Henry South from 4gotowar.com which is also awesome (somewhat because I’ll be able to shoot him without going to prison – Sorry, Henry).

This is really showing off how far the designers and standards have come at GW HQ. That’s in no way a knock to the people who designed the original gangs (new designers are standing on their shoulders of course), but these guys no longer look like ‘just blokes’ and have some real personality and a lot of great details. And whereas the Goliaths and Eschers were updates to established cool identities, these Orlock chaps are a true reinvention. Based on these guys, I can’t wait to see more gangs appear throughout 2018.

These deep-down hipsters will be hitting the Underhive boards in early 2018, but for those of you either playing legacy gangs or already planning out how to field these mooks, I’ve got some name generators for you.

For your gang name, it’s the traditional initials game. First initial and Surname initial. That gives me The Jack-Hammer Apes which I rather like. There’s a general fist/miner/street-gang sort of theme to this. Think On The Waterfront meets The Warriors meets 40K. Even with their new look, I can’t shake the idea that these guys would say things like “Yous guys” while calling people “jabronies”. I know I would if I thought I could actually pull it off.

orlock gang name generator

And now for your gang members. As with last time, you can use this however you like. I’ve been using the Name 1 columns to give me my basic ganger names (though with this one, sometimes I’ve just been using the first column, and sometimes both – the name length gives some nice variance), Name 1 and Name 2 columns for my champs, and the whole lot to give my leader a name. But you do you – make it work however you can or want to. D66 and there’s no worries about rerolling if you don’t like what you got.

And there you have it. Will I be buying these guys when they appear in early 2018? You better believe I will be. I’m currently working on my Goliath gang but I’m doing a starting-a-campaign sized gang (6 guys) so I should have some painted things to show off soon. Until then, happy painting. Onwards!
