WIP – Mortifactors Contemptor Dreadnought 2

dread legs

It has come to my attention that not much of my own work has been appearing on this blog of late and, in a rather unimpressive way, I would like to correct this by showing you a WIP. The members of the Google+ Warhammer 40,000 community asked me to work on a new Mortifactors Contemptor and I wanted to prove that I am obliging, albeit slowly.

As you can see, his kinky boots and not-so-knobbly knees are done, and the legs as a whole are drawing to a close too. I’m still not finding much time to do any painting, but slowly, I’m getting through it. Very slowly.

nightlords dread feet

Much of the paint work is as you’d expect it from my old projects so there’s not a great deal to talk about there. A couple of things to note are that using the Night Lords Contemptor body as a base was a great idea (even if I do say so myself) and it’s been really fun to paint and work on all the little details of it – check out the little bones in the picture above. Secondly, I know the pose looks static, but I have a plan. If I can pull it off, this guy could look awesome. You’ll have to wait and see with that and the arms (which should be the last part of this) will have a big part to play in that.

Well, it ain’t the most triumphant return to the painting pictures, but it’s a solid start for me to work on. There are a couple of bits to fix still and still a great deal more to do, but I’m heading in the right direction and I’m thinking more and more about the Mortifactors again. These are good things and hopefully I’ll have something a little more complete to show you soon. Onwards!

Old School Eavy Metal Photos – Why I Fell In Love With 40k

Posted by johnnya10 on 28/01/2015

These are quite possibly the most important images in the history of my relationship with this hobby. As things continue to be a little slow around here at the moment, I want to start kicking it into gear and revisiting these pics has been a treat. I’ve been searching for inspiration, and in returning to my 2nd Ed roots to find the images that first inspired me to spend my pocket money on little lead toy soldiers, I’ve had a few epiphanies. These were the images that appeared in white dwarf and often on its back cover during those days, or in the rule books around the mid 1990s.

I’ve been trawling the net for these images and been studying them avidly, just as I used to do when I was but a slip of a lad (the lad in question being my father, and the slip being I). I’ve even put together a little folder of these that I’ve been enjoying and so I thought I’d stick ten of them up here. These are both my favourites, and also the ones that have helped me draw a few conclusions and ask a few questions. All credit goes to the old Eavy Metal team for these great shots.

1. I Miss Epic orks vs squats epic

I really do, and that’s weird. I think it’s weird anyway. It’s not like you could get a huge amount of detail on any of the models, and the models themselves (particularly the infantry) were pretty dorky and static. But that’s not what Epic was about. It was about large scale battles with the player being far more of a General, instead of just a commander. This is what we’re supposed to aspire to in 40k now and sculpting and moulding has progressed so far that we can have a lot of the minis once thought confined to the Epic tabletop in our 28mm games, but a full size apocalypse battle tends to take days rather than hours. Epic could be shorter, relied on very different tactics and ideas and helped you to imagine sweeping planetary vistas rather than a tiny chunk of a city. What’s more, owning a Titan was the price of a beer or two, not a mortgage payment. Anyway, I do miss those little guys.

2. Battle Reports Were Awesome

white dwarf battle report old school

I remember this one fondly. It was a huge tank battle between the Space Marines and Imperial Guard and it looked immense. You know how you go to an Apocalypse game and half the models are badly painted and some weird, strained allegiance explains why Chaos and ELdar are on the same side and it’s all a bit naff? Well, there were a couple of these huge 4 vs 4 battle reports over the years and they just made these big games look so awesome because everything was painted by the Eavy Metal team. And they used to take up a huge chunk of White Dwarf too, but they were so interesting; reading tactics, reactions and all the rest. I miss those.

3. I Still Aspire To Be Fred Reed

howling griffon army

Fred Reed was a hero. A legend within the Howling Griffons chapter, even. All who have come since that have painted this army, owe a little to this dude’s amazing force. When I was a kid, this resembled an almost unachievable dream. All those models! All those faultless splits between red and yellow! That army was, and remains, a great big slice of awesome pie, covered in sprinkles and cream. All hail Fred Reed.

4. The Grimdark Used To Be Very Green

tyranid imperial epic

It was only when I started looking through these snaps that I realised just how verdant and lush the 41st Millennium used to look. It wasn’t all cracked concrete, blood n mud, or space hulky back then. It was a veritable Eden (though with giant war machines stomping around it) and it was good. It just goes to show that the Grimdark doesn’t have to be grim and/or dark all the time.

5. I Miss Not Being Able To Get Stuff

ultramarines orks 2nd ed

Right. When I was a lad, I saw this picture and of all the awesomeness going on here, I wanted those Gretchin. Not the Razorback or the rockets or the cyboars (I miss those – they were delightfully silly). I wanted those Gretchin. I had the plastic ones from the 2nd Ed box and, as discussed on this blog before, they were a little dull. The ones in this picture were dynamic and interesting and they looked so much better. I used to go into the old Reading GW and walk along the rows of blister packs and boxes and they were never there. Ever. I asked and was always told ‘nah, we never get those – dunno why’ and that was it. I had no access to those models but that made them even more special and I know it’s weird to miss something that was kind of a downer, but it was genuinely a simpler time and there was more mystery to those models. Still never got those Gretchin though.

6. I Miss Squats

epic squats

Yeah, I know. Big cliche. Everyone misses Squats and then you actually see some of the old models and you think ‘Ewww… why?’. But I’d love to see these guys make a return. There are some very talented people out there doing homebrew armies (one of my favourites is the hugely talented Mikko Luoma whose work is well worth a look) but I’d love GW to support this army again and really make a go of it. Alas, it’ll almost certainly never happen, but we can dream.

7. 2nd Ed Scenery Was The Best

da wolves 2nd ed

It just was. Yes, technically the modern stuff that GW creates is more accessible and yes, people have made amazing stuff of their own, but these ruins were the best. In an era where plenty of us were smashing up polystyrene to try and do something similar, the stuff the Eavy Metal team were creating was at the cutting edge and it was just beautiful. It set the scene and captured the imagination and it just looked amazing. Big Respect for that.

8. But the Best Scenery of 2nd Ed Was Orky

ork 2nd ed buildings

Remember when Orks actually used to live in buildings? They were kind of ancient central American-inspired little houses covered in colourful glyphs and they just looked great. I always wanted to build one of these for myself, and maybe one day I will because they just look so cool to me. I miss house-trained Orks.

9. Eldar Used To Be A Bit Derpy

eldar orks 2nd edFar from the sleek, fast and thin looking Eldar of today, these guys looked a bit less graceful and a bit more derpy. Look at the teeny avatar! And that lumpy old Eldar Dreadnought! And those fat helmets! Love it. Takes ’em down a peg by reminding them of these ‘classic looks’.

10. My Favourite Image Was…

blood angels eldar

So, having just called them Derpy, the Eldar eventually improved and made it into my favourite picture from those old days. This was included in one of the old 2nd Ed books from the starter set and it was kind of everything I aspired to. That great terrain with two beautifully painted armies going to war on it. There were unusual miniatures that I’d never seen before, painting that I just thought was out of this world and I instantly fell in love with the Blood Angels too. This image, to me, represents 2nd Edition like nothing else. And I miss it.

So there you go. I trust that that was a pleasant stroll down memory lane? Thanks to the folks at Eavy Metal for dragging my wide-eyed young self into this hobby. Thanks for all those images that made me love this hobby. I’m feeling a little more like working on my armies having just written this post, and I hope you’re in a similar mood. Onwards!

Outsourcing Decision Making, and a Good Community

Posted by johnnya10 on 21/01/2015

As my regular readers will continue to notice, this blog is a little slow at the moment. It’s not a case of hobby malaise anymore, but instead comes from other priorities taking over in my life. I want to get back into painting more, but I don’t have much time these days and when I do manage to scrape together a couple of hours of free time, I’m usually too knackered to pick up my brush. All those plans i made at the end of last year are taking a bit of a hit but I’m hoping to turn that around soonish.

sherlock sleep gif

To that end, I have reached out to one of my favourite 40k groups for a bit of help and inspiration and I think they deserve a plug here. They are the fine folks over at the Warhammer 40,000 Community on Google+. It’s not the most widely used platform out there, but there are good numbers and it’s always growing, and the set up of community pages really lends itself to constructive discussions and sharing work. And there are lots of other cool communities out there and G+ has some pretty fun features too.

GooglePlus-Logo-Official

I can give you a very recent example of this here, because, this group has helped me get my arse in gear and get going on my Mortifactors once again. One thing that G+ has (which facebook used to have but dropped) is the ability to post polls, and so, I posted the following:

google plus poll example

All I knew is that I wanted to paint something big, but I didn’t really have a preference or the strength of conviction to do anything about it. I’ll hopefully get around to painting all of these at some point, but I had no way of deciding where to start. So, I’d like to thank the G+ 40k Community for making this decision for me and responding with constructive comments, and i can now confirm that I have placed an order with Forge World for a Dreadnought, which will hopefully be here next week.

And just to show you that I am as mad as ever, and as ambitious as I ever was, I thought I would post up here what will be the base of a MORTIFACTORS dreadnought. I really don’t make things easy for myself…

Anyway, keep an eye on this space for updates on this project (and others if I ever get round to them), and I highly recommend popping over to G+ and joining the community. Link is above in the text. Onwards!

Whispers in the Warp – What Would a New CSM Update Look Like?

Posted by johnnya10 on 14/01/2015

wild speculation blog post

So 6th/7th edition codices will, in 2015, go full circle. But what are we to expect? In the new landscape of data slates and supplements, will we get traditional codex updates in the same way that we are used to, or should we be expecting something completely different? Let the nonsensical guessing-game begin!

There’s lots of speculative gossip on the internet at the moment (well, that kind of sums up the whole internet) regarding the armies that will get new shiny things in 2015. There’s plenty to get excited about, even if it means taking about an ocean’s worth of salt pinching with each one. Ad mech, Harlequins, Sisters… These would all be, at the very least, interesting, if not downright awesome. Necrons are due a turn given their book, though written very much with 6th in mind, is the last of the 5th edition codices and so I think we can count that as an almost certainty.

sisters

But then there’s the idea of what happens next. A lot of whispers are going around regarding the idea of new Chaos Space Marines, as well as Dark Angels and Daemons due to how long their books have been on the shelves. Let’s focus on the CSM though for the purposes of this post as we try to discern what we can expect if they do get some form of release this year (or at least have fun making things up).

Codex: Same As Usual?

What are the odds that we see a brand new codex with completely different rules, units and formations arrive? Well, if we go by the history of the game, logic, common sense and nearly all other relevant factors, you’d have to say the odds are pretty good. However, the gap between a new book and the last one would be far shorter than we’ve seen before. That doesn’t really change the feasibility of the notion but it does mean that the option to change this style up a bit is more forthcoming. What’s more, GW have definitely been in a changing-things-up frame of mind of late.

csm codex

Each new book essentially requires a large amount of four things – new models, new artwork, new fluff and new rules. Or does it? The Grey Knights got a new book with no new models in sight, as did the Inquisition. The libraries of fluff and artwork that GW now has in its vaults are huge and easily recyclable and more is being produced all the time. There are FAQs and Errata that can incorporated and it wouldn’t take too much effort to incorporate these updates. What if instead of a truly new book, we got a second edition of the current book? Would it sell?

Supplemental books?

So say we either retained the current CSM book, or got a second edition of said book, what about the ideas of data slates and supplemental codices? Black Legion already have their own mini book, and Cypher and Be’lakor already have their own slates, so if GW wanted to release new units and characters, this might be a way to do it. They could actually make more money by incorporating said documents into a new edition of the current book, and by selling them separately as downloads and separate books to those who didn’t buy the new book (if they did their maths right).

black legion

But what would we want to see? Essentially, what many CSM players have been clamouring for is something like what the Space Marines have now. To put it simply: Chapter Tactics. Cult troops provide this to a degree, but they alone don’t provide the coherency that Chapter Tactics do (and they are pretty different ideas, even GW would have to admit). Now, it’s very unlikely that all 9 legions would end the year with a supplement, even if Abaddon’s boys already have one. However, imagine a month of Chaos releases like this:

Week 1: Codex: Emperor’s Children / New Noise Marines

Week 2: Codex: Death Guard / New Plague Marines

Week 3: Codex: World Eaters / New Berserkers

Week 4: Codex: Thousand Sons / New Rubric Marines

That would make a lot of people very happy (and probably annoy people who play the other four legions but if you can’t please everyone…) and all those model sets need updating (quite badly in some cases). Add one more week to that schedule and you could bring out a couple of big scary kits too, along with the updated main Codex. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

The End Times Idea

daemons csm

WFB has been given a new lease of life with the end times and the vast, rangy army selections have been simplified somewhat by the idea of combined armies which I don’t think is a bad idea at all. Well, what if 40k went a little more in that direction too, and brought back the idea of Daemons and CSM fighting out of the same book once again?

daemons

If 40k really focussed on its own brand of the End Times (namely, Abaddon’s invasion from the Eye – the 13th Black Crusade), it would make a little more sense. Not all armies would have to go the same way (I can’t necessarily see all Imperial troops, or even just all the Space Marines in the same book) but who would have guessed all the elves would get rolled into one? Or Warriors, Daemons and Beastmen all going into the same tome? So the idea of CSM and Daemons sharing the same book isn’t that mad at all (in fact, long ago it was the norm), and could help to reinvigorate both armies. It would certainly sell and it would give a lot of new dimensions and formations to those armies borne of the warp.

How Was That For A Fat Slice Of Wishlisting?

Seriously, i have no clue. This post was as much a case of me trying to work out the various possibilities in my head as it was anything else. There’s every chance that we’ll just get another normal codex and a normal release thing and then all the usual moaning when it’s not an overpowered list monster of a book. It would be really nice to have some version of chapter tactics though, and there’s definitely a few things they could fix *cough*mutilators*coughcough*. Whatever happens, I’m just hoping it’s cool enough to make me want to buy it. Onwards!

What are your own fevered imaginations? Have you dreamt up something else for a new CSM codex?

INQ28 – Ordo Xenos Warband

ordo xenos warband

As regular readers (or those who at least read the last post on here) will know, I recently completed work on my Inquisitor, Thor Joshan, and got my new camera up and running as well. To that end I am bringing you, in this here post, the completed Ordo Xenos retinue. Well, I say ‘completed’, but this is plastic crack and the hobby never ends, so who knows, right? However, the core group is now complete and with these sexy new glamour shots, they look better than ever. So without further ado (the chance of even a little rudimentary ado would be a fine thing), here they are in all their glory.

IInky Squet – The Last Of His Kind, The Rodent Rogue, The Mercenary

And there you have them. I am chuffed to bits with my first attempt at an INQ28 retinue and I am now feverishly trying to dream up new monsters, individuals and lunatics to do this again. May the Emperor bless me with some form of divine inspiration. Comments, questions and criticisms are welcome below and if you’ve got any crazy ideas to add to my own, let me know. Onwards!

INQ28 – Inquisitor Thor Joshan, Ordo Xenos

Posted by johnnya10 on 01/01/2015

ordo xenos inquisitor

“Joshan’s actions are at the very least unorthodox, and are at most on the borders of outright heresy. He walks in the twilight at the edges of our known galaxy and has collected about him a menagerie of mutants, eccentrics and even aliens. He is but a few steps away from moving beyond the edicts of the Emperor’s Holy Inquisition, and is for that reason that I must judge him to be ‘observed’.”

– Lord Inquisitor Enriko Ranz (Ordo Xenos)

=][=

And I am back. Reports of my being abducted by the Inquisition and locked away in a vault on Terra, have been greatly exaggerated. Not only that, but I bring you my new Inquisitor, Thor Joshan. Also, he has been snapped with my brand new camera which I’m still figuring out and getting used to but nevertheless, these snaps are still a vast improvement on those previously taken with my iPhone.

Thor Joshan isn’t exactly a rogue inquisitor, but he’s not in the Ordo’s good books either. He has a history of committing questionable actions and behaviour, and his retinue is composed of elements that don’t meet the Inquisition’s strictest standards. But more on that fluff later.

inq28 inquisitor

I took the Empire Witch Hunter from the fantasy game and cut his very fancy hat and gruff looking head off, replacing it with a green stuff hood and half the head of a space marine. I added some brass to the big sword and an Inquisitorial talisman to his uniform. To further bring him into the grimdark, I’ve got him standing on a rusting rhino front and there’s a servo skull floating there too (though it refused to get into focus). Oh, and I topped off his sword with a big skull because, well, y’know, …skulls.

I’m really happy with this guy and he makes a great leader for my small retinue, and my first venture into INQ28. Speaking of the retinue, now I’ve got this fancy new camera, there may well be a few new pictures of them on the way too. But anyway, it’s good to be back. This is the first thing I’ve painted in a very long time, but I’m happy to say I’ve got the painting bug again. Onwards!

Happy 1st Birthday To Me! Heresy & Heroes Turns One.

Posted by johnnya10 on 15/12/2014

happy birthday community

This odd little blog of mine has just turned one year old!! Furthermore, with it almost being 2015 and with me being stuck in a relatively oppressive hobby malaise at the moment, I thought I’d take this opportunity to look back at some of the more active and happier times over the last 365. Ah, the memories…

The First Post Of Many

Ah. Our first stumbling block. Technically, the first post doesn’t actually exist anymore. The first post that went up here was something just to hold the place of an actual post and it was deleted when the first proper post went up four days later. The actual proper post (which will be a year old on the 19th) can be found here. It’s my first Mortifactors post! Nine completed tactical Space Marines, at the time still awaiting their sgt were the very first new miniatures that I put up here and it’s fair to say that this Space Marine chapter has been the stalwart of the blog this year.

first post

I would later make the pledge that 2000pts of Mortifactors would be done by the end of 2014 and, if I’m being honest, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility, but it’s not looking too likely due to the malaise. But quite a few models have been and gone since I started this project and I’m almost there with the first part of this long term army, so I’m still pretty proud of the volumes of work that I’ve done. Rest assured, Mortifactors will be a big part of 2015 too, but for those really interested, this is where and when it all started (it’s probably only me who’s that interested but whatever).

The Importance of Being Useful:

It’s a good tip for any blogger whose work relates to any subject – being useful and providing useful and relevant ideas and information is the best thing you can do. Now, mostly, I spend my time examining GW’s practices, or showing off my awful photography of my hopefully-not-so-awful miniatures. However, I have also tried to bring you at least a little bit of usefulness too, and though I’m not exactly a master painter, I have been thrilled that what meagre walkthroughs and tips I can provide have been met with such a good reception.

Space Marine Scout with Urban Camo Cloak

Most popular by far has been my tutorial of how to paint urban camo cloaks. My Space Marine Scouts do look pretty nice (if i do say so myself) and most people who see them point to the cloaks. I still think it’s a good technique that’s relatively simple to pull off and I guess that’s why people like it. it’s nice to know that people are responsive to these sorts of ideas too, and I’ve also seen plenty of visits come through to the basing tutorials. That’s one resolution for the new year – do more of these tutorials.

Ordo Acronymicus is also getting plenty of views these days and I do try to regularly update it whenever I get a chance. And if I’ve missed something, let me know and I’ll add it in.

My Favourite Miniatures Projects From 2014

In no particular order, here are some images of the models that I have worked on this year that of which I am most proud. Yes the big pink one (as previously discussed, the undisputed king of my miniatures this year) is in there, but there’s plenty more too. Anyway, here’s a good list of the things I’ve done that I’m really of, and as I consider 2014 to be my best painting year ever, it was hard not to include everything.

(Some Of) My Favourite Blogs

The blogroll here has grown a lot this year and there are plenty of other sites that I regularly head to to gain some inspiration, and I think you should too. Everything on that roll (it’s on the right hand side of this page and every page if you haven’t spotted it) is worth checking out, but I’m just going to outline some things that I’ve come across lately that I’m really impressed with.

Officio Convertorum – As I’ve gone into the realm of INQ28, finding inspiration for conversions has been a big part of my growth in this area. This site is full to the rafters with brilliant ideas that trace Jeff Vader’s ideas from sketch book, into construction, through multiple WIPs and eventual completion. The man is a great talent across many hobby fields and if you’re looking to get inspired and see what sort of mind you need for INQ28, this is a great place to start.

FTGT – I have a genuine need to consume 40k opinion and ideas on a daily basis. Many of us in the hobby suffer/enjoy the same affliction. This is a great place to go when you want to gauge the thoughts of intelligent and talented painters, gamers and writers on a regular basis. The guys who run this blog have some great ideas and deal with the issues and challenges that we all deal with in the hobby, as well as finding plenty of time to enjoy themselves too. Need your daily hobby fix – go here.

Slave To Slaanesh – This is just one of those projects that I’m really enjoying watching progress. Craig is a very talented painter who shares my devotion to She Who Thirsts, though he expresses it in a 30k/Daemons kind of way and watching the progress of his Heresy era Emperor’s Children is so much fun. As the army grows, it just keeps getting better. Check it out!

4gotowar – I couldn’t not give a shout out to my No.1 buddy, Henry South and his blog. I read it with equal parts envy, enjoyment and pride and many of you will be familiar with his work that has appeared across the net and even in Visions. No, I’m not jealous at all (he types, stabbing the keys on his keyboard). Go and enjoy – the boy’s got a lot of talent and deserves your attention.

Thanks for Reading

I’d like to think that I’d still do this even if no-one was reading it, but knowing that you guys enjoy this blog makes it a lot more fun to write. In the last 12 months, so many of you have given me great feedback and I’ve not had any abuse, so I’d like to thank you for that. It has been a pleasure to keep you entertained, and it’s been great for keeping my hobby interest going. In fact, after writing this, I’m feeling more like wanting to paint than I have done in weeks. Maybe the next post will actually be about me painting something – you never know. Onwards!!

Hobby Malaise/Fatigue is Back. Damn It.

sherlock bored

When it comes to the Hobby, I am bored. Bored bored bored. Booooooorrrrrreeeeeedddddd. Bored. I am finding my painting and modelling efforts to be a source of dullness, tedium, ennui, apathy and an unsatisfying frustration of the most boring nature. Oh, the boredom…

And just after I made all those plans for next year! Typical. I’m still very excited about next year but right now, I am bored. I think it’s down to what’s on my table at the moment – a headless Inquisitor and four sprues worth of Stormraven Gunship. Both are quite crucial. Both require a lot of effort on my part in one way or another. They’re both loaded with stressful moments, long hours and the scope for me to screw up and right now, I just don’t have the enthusiasm, will or inclination to do a gosh darn thing about either one of them.

breakfast club bored

You may have noticed that I’ve not posted up any newly painted miniatures in quite a while now. Indeed, this has been with me for a couple of weeks, so my productivity has been tanking for spell already. Hopefully that means we’re closer to the end of such fatigue but who knows. At the moment, despite trying to invigorate myself with new purchases, plans for the future and reminding myself of my good work so far this year, it hasn’t done anything for me. Temporarily, and for the moment, I’m out.

30 rock bored

We’ve been over all of this before and I know that you go through it too. It’s this blog’s 1st birthday next week and in 2014, this problem has only really cropped up twice, so that’s not too bad a record. Here’s hoping that I can snap myself out of it sooner rather than later, but I wanted to let those of you who come here for my painting know that this is why there has been something of a dry spell in these parts of late.

house bored

As with the last post on this subject from earlier in the year, if you’ve got any sure-fire tips to stifle this annoying aspect of the Hobby, feel free to chime in with your two cents below. If we can find a cure for this boredom, we will all be far better off. And if you have no answer, at least spare a thought for your fallen comrade who has succumbed to the draining bleakness of that most wicked opponent – Hobby Malaise…

Miniature Focus – Blood Angels Death Company & Chaplain Lemartes

How do you make ‘Space Vampires’ more vampirey? Why, you dress them in black power armour of course! With the new blood angels releases just around the corner, it seemed apt to take a look at one of their signature units – The Death Company.

A Bit Of History

Christopher-Lee-Dracula

Is it possible that the guys from GW’s early days weren’t massive Hammer Horror fans? So many miniatures, particularly Fantasy’s Undead range, looked like they’d just walked off set of one of their classic scary movies. I have it on good authority that one of the old ghouls is actually based on Peter Cushing (not really). Their biggest star was of course Dracula, played expertly (and often against the odds) by Christopher Lee (who, the rumours say, is a GW player too). Ok, so I can’t make any direct link, but when I look at images like the one above, it’s hard for me to not drawn a few comparisons.

At the end of the Rogue Trader era of 40k, it wasn’t the smurfs who were the poster boys of the game, but instead the Blood Angels held that crown. As well as appearing on John Blanche’s iconic box art for 2nd Edition, they saw a clutch of new releases too, including the Death Company. In 1993, the unit that for many defines the sons of Sanguinius got their first box release of ten miniatures including the first Death Company Chaplain. This chaplain is widely regarded as being the first Lemartes though back then he didn’t really have a name. it was during this time that they also appeared on the cover of Codex: Angels of Death, a testament to their status as a beloved unit within the game.

The first true Lemartes, along with the second iteration of the Death Company arrived in 1999 for 3rd edition and one of the coolest miniatures from the 2nd edition era (says I) was replaced by one of the dorkiest looking metal chaplains to ever derp its way across the table top. The Death Company box was released as a metal/plastic combo of five miniatures and a series of shoulder pads came out as well.

The modern box set and the new, much cooler Lemartes crashed down alongside a Death Company Dreadnought in 2010 and the boys in the black suits could now bound around in jump packs. This is one of the earliest examples of a truly modern kit with bucket loads of options and very high quality plastic sculpts. At the time of writing this, these weren’t available on the UK site but there’s bound to be a repackaging in the works to bring the kit in line with the current look of GW’s products.

Let’s Get Fluffy

The Black Rage was born in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy. Rocked by the death of their beloved Primarch, Sanguinius, the Blood Angels were as close to inconsolable as Space Marines can be. In the battles that followed a number of the Legion, and the chapters it would break up into, began to see visions of Sanguinius’ death at the hands of his fallen brother, Horus. Tormented by these nightmarish hallucinations, they became uncontrollable. Those afflicted descended into insanity, fuelled by rage, sorrow, pain, hate and regret. Only two warriors who have gone fallen victim to this genetic flaw have ever been released from its dark clutches, and most find themselves in the Tower of Amareo wherein reside the Death Company, clad in their black armour that sets them aside from the rest of the chapter.

The curse of the Black Rage is a blessing on the battlefield, conferring an unrelenting viciousness to the Death Company when they are loosed on the Imperium’s enemy. Each Astartes believes himself to be the reincarnation of Sanguinius and fights with much of the Primarch’s ferocity and skill. The Captains and Chapter Masters of the Blood Angels and their successor chapters know what such a weapon can do and deploy these brothers to inflict the most amount of damage to the enemy, while also looking over them with the care and charity that is part of the Chapter’s doctrine. The grim truth of this though is that many, once their thirst is sated and the battle won, die without their madness sustaining them.

Lemartes lost his mind to the Black Rage as the Blood Angels were preparing to face an ork horde on Hadriath XI. He did not fall in battle and so was taken to be mercifully executed. As Astorath the Grim, High Chaplain of the Blood Angels prepared to execute Lemartes, he realised that Lemartes was in control of his thoughts and his body. His life spared, Lemartes is the only Blood Angel ever to show an ability to live on while in the grips of the Black Rage and whats more, he has the ability to inspire other members of the Death Company around him to fight on harder and with greater purpose.

Time To Talk Tactics

It will be interesting how these change after the release of the new Codex so I won’t go into too much detail here, but it has been a (relatively) long time since the Blood Angels have been a ‘top tier’ sort of list. In 5th, the Descent of Angels builds (all jump packs, all the time) were a nightmare for many, but since then they’ve wavered somewhat as power creep has moved other codices beyond them. The Death Company themselves though, while an expensive unit if you give them all the bells and whistles, have remained an ever present in many people’s lists just because of their great value in assault.

They have a lot of attacks and an extra point of strength too, so on the charge, five of these guys can wade through a whole mess of enemies and with the standard Space Marine save as well as FNP, they’re a bit more durable than normal marines too. That being said, they are a shell magnet and your opponent is going to throw a lot at them to stop them reaching their targets and that FNP will only get them so far. Either have them deep strike with jump packs (which makes them a little pricier) or pack them into a transport and run them fast up the field. Then, just give them the weapons you think you’ll need to get the job done – hammers and fist, or axes and swords.

Lemartes, while making the unit even pricier, gives you some great boons too, meaning that you’ll be hitting and wounding a lot more. But like I said, let’s wait to see what the new ‘dex does with this unit.

If Looks Could Kill…

The Blood Angels already look pretty cool in Red Armour, so how do you up those stakes even further? Black. There is an inherent coolness in the look of the Death Company due to their black armour which of course reflects the rage within. Adorned with blood drops, wings and the red crosses, so long associated with plague victims, these guys have a lot going for them in terms of looks. Whats more, all their weapon options can make them look all the more like a very special unit. One particular quirk that I like of recent years is that a couple of Blood Angels successor chapters, including the Angels Encarmine have their Death Company wearing white armour instead of black. This look is a startling contrast and when executed well, looks fantastic.

Lemartes is of course a Chaplain and nearly all Chaplains have skull helms but his seems to look more skull-like and more grimdark. The pose of the current model is great at conveying the man who walks through madness that the character is, and like the others, there is so much iconography and detail across all of his armour.

Ah, The Memories…

angels of death cover

Back in 2nd Edition, I had that first original box of Death Company and it’s one of the kits I remember most fondly from that time. For that day and age, it was so full of options and really quite a dynamic box despite being metal (though I can’t remember if it was 100% metal or not – I think it was…). I’m very tempted to try my hand at them again, and if I can squeeze in some time for these guys next year, I might just do that. I can see some form of Space Vampire making good allies for my Mortifactors.

In Conclusion

There are some things in this world that do not change. Those two fundamental truths of death and taxes can be joined by a third: Space Marines in black armour wielding hand-to-hand weapons will always be cool. And the Death Company have so much more going for them than that in those stakes too. They are ferocious, perfectly sculpted and with a fully detailed background too. Ultramarines may be the poster boys, Chaos might be ‘the Greatest Threat’, Tyranids may be the xenos-du-jour, but these guys have a classic, permanent coolness that can’t be denied. What’s more, with an inclusion in the new campaign box and at least a box revamp in the offing, they look set to retain their influence and status in the game.

Project: Sinphony Of Bliss – Bring the Noise, Bring the… Pink.

project sinphony of bliss

Regular readers of this blog will know that one model in 2014 has well and truly beaten all comers in terms of interest and praise (why thank you), and it has upped my reputation considerably as well. There’s no point in trying to make this a surprise – it’s Dios Toros.

Dios Toros - Slaaneshi Imperial Knight

Yes, the big pink goon is among the best miniatures that I’ve ever produced and if he does nothing else, he catches the eye. However, he is not the only Slaaneshi ‘sonic’ walker that I’ve created. There’s also my Sonic Dreadnought who, though he doesn’t have a name (yet), was essentially the inspiration for Dios Toros. So I have two Slaaneshi walkers. Two is a collection…

For The Prince of Pleasure

Give the people what they want, right? Well, how would the people feel about an army of walkers, ranging from Sonic Dreadnoughts to Knights all dedicated to She Who Thirsts? I may not be the best judge of character in the world, but I think people might be pleased (or at least terrified) to see a full army of hulking machines, bedecked with eye-bleeding colours and covered in ear-bursting weaponry standing on the other side of the battlefield.

There are now enough different types of walker to make this a varied force, and I’m now at a level of confidence with my skills, both in terms of painting and modelling that I am comfortable(ish) taking on this project. Up to 10 walkers, or maybe even more, dressed to the nines in garish tones and holding blastmasters, doom sirens and more. if that won’t make you kneel before Slaanesh, nothing will.

Plusses and Minuses

We now live in an age of unbound armies and though I do like to build to the basic ‘1 HQ, 2 Troop’ minimum, I also like the idea of building something ridiculous and over the top. I have my Mortifactors to carry on with and they’ll be my ‘proper’ army, but this gives me the freedom to work on some amazing models and create something the I love to create – pink robot monsters with the fashion sense of a colour-blind certified lunatic. What’s more, if other people like it, that’s all the better. Plus, you know that at some point Forge World will release a Subjugator, right?

Slaanesh Subjugator

There are a couple of downsides though. Not even thinking about the financials involved in such a project (Forge World’s premium brand of plastic crack ain’t cheap, and nor are GW’s big kits), there are a couple of issues. This will be a real slow burner of a project but I want a core group of walkers completed by 2015’s end, so it’s a long commitment. Another minus that I can think of is potentially down to my attitude. If any of you remember me working on my Knight last year, you’ll remember that about half way through, I was completely sick and tired of it. Painting had become arduous and aggravating. I really don’t want to be going through that this year, so I’m planning on keeping my wits about me and doing the bigger pieces nice and slowly. Work when I want to work, rest when I want to rest.

Convert to Slaanesh

microphone question mark

Another aspect of this project is that I’m planning on doing a heavy amount of conversions with this. From adding texture to pads of armour, to forging oversized sonic weapons for the larger walkers. But one of the biggest aspects will be creating a definable HQ unit for this force. While still moving away from the traditional FOC, I want to have a conductor, a ‘vocal’ point, a lead singer for my army too. The being who put this group of heavy metal monsters together in the first place. I’ve got some ideas for this but I’ll say no more for the time being. Until the time comes to do it, I shall keep my options open.

So along with the last couple of posts on the subject, that rounds off my projects for next year. Here’s to a fun, skull-filled, tactical squad themed, decidedly pink and inquisitorial 2015. Onwards!!
