Dice, Damned Dice and Statistics

lots of dice

Dice, Dice, Dice, My Darling.

Stupid dice. Evil dice. Or even, as I once referred to them, “Stupid, evil, B%#€ard, rotten dice! I will  f¥˚^ing smash your #€¥$∆+ ?]¥€€=^%%¥ with a ¬$¥%ing hammer, you €$¥#^s!!!”. We’ve all done it. When we’ve rolled double sixes when taking a leadership test, or snake eyes when rolling our armour saves. In fact, on one (regrettably) memorable occasion, I managed to roll five ones out of five when trying to save my terminators from mere shuriken catapults. I can’t even type the censored version of what I shouted at those malevolent cubes of evil on that occasion – there aren’t enough substitute characters on this computer to convey they visceral, gushing loathing and hatred that vomited forth from my face on that occasion.

That’s the odd thing though. I am one of the most mild-mannered of gamers to have ever taken to the battlefield. What’s more, I class myself as a rational human being, and yet, dice have swelled my face red with rage and provoked some far more colourful bouts of language that would make a sailor blush. So what is it that makes dice so despicable? Why do we react to it? And what can we do to help ourselves.

evil dice

Many moons ago, I used to play poker on a regular basis. I got relatively good by the standards of the pub league that I frequented and even made a decent bit of cash from it. But I always laughed a little when I’d see people reading books on the subject. There is something in understanding the likelihood of cards showing up on the flop, the turn or the river, and the psychological aspect of pushing your opponents to help you win. And, as in many areas, aping the successful can be a good way to find success yourself. But that being said, the thing that will help you best in any game that is ultimately ruled by luck, is luck itself. Call it chance, fate, divine intervention or whatever else, you can know as much as you can, but it’s never fully in your hands. I always said that I’d rather be a lucky a player than a good player, though it was helpful that I was both.

I used to always pay to see the flop when I was holding 7-2 off-suit. Statistically, this is the worst hand in poker, but when chance is involved, statistics ultimately mean nothing. The amount of times I would see a pair of sevens or twos appear on the board was almost uncanny. It reminded me of Terry Pratchett’s adage that if the odds are exactly 1,000,000 to 1, it’s guaranteed to happen. The other reason I’d do it was, I’ll admit, a bit troll-like. When I flipped over my three of a kind or full house to the guy who went into it with a pair of aces, you could almost see his blood boil. I’ve even had people screaming at me “You can’t go in on 7-2!!” as if there was a rule that stated that.

The reason I bring this up is that it’s another example of us, as humans, not being able to cope with the idea that we are not in control of every aspect of the universe and our lives. We have a very tricky time dealing with this. It’s one of the reasons why we have religions, and the sole reason why we have superstitions in general. All those lucky rabbits feet, four-leaf clovers and general ladder avoidance. It actually angers us if can’t influence the outcome of luck and reacting to it reveals our fear that we ultimately don’t have control. We are subject either to chaos or the will of something greater than us – whatever you believe in.

It’s why we curse these objects that lack consciousness as if they can actually understand us. Who hasn’t imagined that dot or depression on the one side of a die glaring up at one, taunting and mocking the idea that one’s tactical abilities were in any way a match for the universe. …just me? Well, we’ve all had that in the broadest sense, I’m sure. Dice drive us mad because they are beyond our control. For all of your Mathhammer and Statistics, all your dice are belong to chaos.

casino dice

But wait. We do control them. We roll them, blow on them and kiss them for luck. We chose to cast them from that height, to land on that spot. Maybe it is our fault. Maybe there is some zen of die casting that we are yet to discover? No. There isn’t. Yes, if you had a supercomputer for a brain, you probably could do as Bender does in Futurama and predict exactly what will show after the roll, but our brains can’t manage that. Besides, it’s ultimately the dice that make the game fun, even if they can also make it frustrating. Just accept it. It is beyond your control. I know it’s hard to admit, but there’s nothing you can do. Or is there…

A while ago, I read an article on the probability of dice rolling. It states that due to the rounded corners and the way the marks/dots are made on the cubes that GW sell, that you are statistically more likely to roll lower numbers when using their dice or those of similar shape and manufacture techniques. Further more, it suggests that casino dice are in fact, by law, required to have a completely even chance of rolling each side. Now before you rush off to buy incredibly expensive casino dice (they ain’t cheap), I suggest that you read some of the rebuttals to this article as well which point out some perceived flaws in the idea, and how scientific the testing techniques are is debatable. What’s more, did you note the word ‘statistically’ appeared earlier in this paragraph. Hmmmm…

I remain unconvinced by this argument that GW has somehow rigged the dice that they produce – even if they have done so inadvertently through penny-pinching (the corners shaved off the dice actually save them a fair bit of cash apparently). I’ve had as many games where my rolling has seen a higher proportion of high rolls, as have been low rolls in other games. And the arguments against this article do make it hard to take completely at face value. It all sounds like humans again desperately trying to influence chance.

loaded dice

But is there anything else we can do? Well, I certainly don’t recommend cheating. Trick dice, or ‘Character Builders’, are the one thing that I have seen that can turn a calm and quiet group of gamers into a torch-wielding mob of psychopaths (and justifiably so). I’ve actually witnessed this draw blood before so I don’t suggest or condone it. What’s more, no one will want to battle you ever again if you employ such ‘tactics’. And it’ll get you a lifetime ban from many tournaments. It simply isn’t worth it. Just ‘man up’ and accept your ones.

What about identifying your ‘lucky’ dice? There are some people who swear by using one set or another for certain tasks. I’ve heard “Oh my green ones always roll low so I use them for leaderships and psychic tests” and seen those same green dice roll double sixes straight away. This is, of course, horse-feathers. But, if it makes you happier, do it. It can’t hurt, but don’t expect magic (even if you’re playing Tzeentch).

The best thing that you can do is learn to deal with it. Be a good sport about it. There’s nothing wrong with venting a bit of frustration at your cubes, but don’t let it colour your game and don’t take it out on your opponent either. I know that this isn’t much of a conclusion – it’s more of a reminder that ultimately, we are in the hands of the dice Gods. Remember that chance, fate, luck, chaos or the will of God(s) (whatever you believe it to be) runs our games, and our lives. Even for generals on real battlefields, they have to cope with this element as well, so why shouldn’t you? Roll well, and don’t let the B€$%ards grind you down.

Grey Knights Techmarine

Grey Knights Techmarine

I thought I’d share this mini with you because a lot of people seem to like it – including me – though it’s far from my best paint job. It’s based on Forge World’s Astral Claws Master of the Forge, Valthex, which is a great looking mini that I felt slightly guilty about chopping up. I then used a pair of falchions and shoulder pads from the Grey Knights Space Marines Box to replace his whips. There are also details created by using purity seals from that box, and some etched brass too (which turned out to be a lot easier to use than I feared).

I really like the effect that I got on the swords (not bad for someone who doesn’t use an airbrush!) and they run throughout the army. And it was fun to paint the Conversion-Beamer too (which has been a fun tactical addition to the army) using a sort of burnished copper/bronze look. The model was undercoated black, I used Citadel Paints and I used a Da Vinci 0000 brush. Here are a few more shots. Any constructive comments or questions? Add them below. Onwards!

Mortifactors Lord Executioner

Mortifactors Lord Executioner

Mortifactors Lord Executioner

The model that kicked off my Mortifactors project. When the new Space Marine Captains were released, I was impressed by all of the sculpts, but the Lord Executioner model was the one that caught my imagination. His stance is deliberate, strong, but calm. He is a powerful warrior of experience and that’s why I picked him to lead my Mortifactors.

It was my first crack at the Black/Bone/Yellow paint schemethat now haunts my dreams as I work on it more than more, and I liked the look straight away (though my execution of it has improved in the days since). I gave his axe a weathered bronze-coloured look which I really like and, to help tie all of the army together, I’m going to use this for all close combat weapons.

All citadel paints, undercoated black and using the Windsor & Newton Series 7 Sable 000 brush for details.

Here are a few more images showing you a bit more of the model. Any questions, pop a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

Kill Team List Building: Part Deux!

kill team

After a Christmas break spent eating my own weight in chocolate, meat and roast potatoes (no mean feat), I returned from the rural, family homestead and have been reunited with my codices. As soon as I had unpacked my loot, I grabbed the books not covered in the last Kill Team list-building article and started coming up with some fun things to use – and remember, I’m thinking more about fun than power-gaming. Check them out, and let me know what you think.

raven guard

Space Marines: Bets on the Vets

5x Vanguard Vets with Jump Packs made up of:

Gunslingers: 2x marines with plasma pistols and bolt pistols

Musketeers: 2x marines with power swords and bolt pistols

Vet Sgt: Power weapon, storm shield and melta bombs

You’ve got the fire power, a wealth of blades and plenty of speed here. These guys don’t get a huge amount of table time in larger games, but I think they might do quite well in Kill Team Games. With this five man team, you can lay down plenty of shots, fear no one in close combat, and you get hammer of wrath attacks too. The melta bombs were a bit of a ‘had a few points left and not much to use them on’ sort of thing, but they’ll be useful if this team runs into any rare armour that might make it into a Kill Team list.

nurgle symbol

Chaos Space Marines: Slimy So-and-Sos

5x Plague Marines including a flamer and the champion takes a power sword.

10x cultists including a flamer and shotgun for the bossman.

We CSM devotees can be a little cynical about cultists. They may have other uses, but we like using them almost exclusively as meat shields. Well, that’s kind of their role here too, though I expect them to do more than they would in a full-sized game. They’re job is to soak up as much firepower as possible, allowing my Plague Marines to get into good firing positions and to take down all standing in their way. Their higher toughness should make them doubly hard to deal with in a game that won’t have any big guns trying to knock them out.

emperors children

Chaos Space Marines: The Choir Invincible

7x Noise Marines made up of:

Noise Champ with power weapon, doom siren, plasma pistol and melta bombs.

3x marines rocking sonic blasters.

3x marines taking the additional CCW.

(and you can take VotLW if you think you’ll be taking on loyalist marines)

One of my favourite lists from 5th used Noise Marines and I’m happy to say, I’ve built another one, again packing plenty of shots and making the most of their increased initiative with some stabby-stabbies. What’s more, the Noise Champ is like a mini-Death-Star and, given a suitable USR to protect him, will be able to deal with a lot of the shots that are bound to head his way.

Eldar symbol

Eldar: Got Wind?

10x Windrider Guardians, including three with shuri cannons.

Possibly the simplest list and, though it has some downsides (no big guns, has to keep moving to survive), it’s got a hell of a lot of ups too. Speed of course, and the fringe benefits that brings are the easiest to spot, but it’s a damn good sized Kill Team too. Use what USRs you want to, and watch your opponents try to deal with the fastest team on the table.

striking scorpions symbol

Eldar: Flexible Arachnids

5x Striking Scorpions

5x Warp Spiders

Then the choice: Scorpion Exarch Upgrade with Biting Blade OR Spider Exarch Upgrade with TL Deathspinner.

Another 10 man Eldar Team with a lot of speed, this time using Elites and Fast Attack choices. Depending on whether you’re going to want your super-fast S6 guns or your melee masters to get a buff, you make the choice in terms of which Exarch to take. Either way, staring down the barrel of 10 Aspect Warriors isn’t going to be that much fun for your opponent, but it’ll be a laugh-n-a-half for you.

And I’m spent. Got any ideas of your own that you’d like to share? Or think there’s a way to get more fun out of my lists? Pop a comment below. Onwards!

Grey Knights

The last army that I completed was my 2000pts Grey Knights force which was a lot of fun to do simply because I’d got bogged down in my far larger Death Guard force for quite some time before that. If you’ve been avidly following this blog up until now, you’ll have seen my Callidus Assassin and Contemptor Dreadnought in other posts. Well, I thought I’d introduce you to a few more members of the gang. Starting with this fella…

Grey Knights Librarian

Grey Knights Librarian

The Terminator Librarian is a Grey Knights classic. He’s tough as houses (especially when equipped with the Nemesis Warding Stave) and his access to level 3 psychic mastery means he can dish out a lot of nasty powers too. The Servo skulls are really fun little additions that, if placed properly, can really annoy your opponents in small but satisfying ways. Very fun to paint, and only a slight conversion with the head of the stave.

Grey Knights Terminators

Grey Knights Terminators

Don’t let your Librarian get lonely! Hook him up with a bodyguard made from arguably the best troop choice in the game – Grey Knights Terminators. With the extra attacks given by the falchions, the heavy hitting psycannon/hammer combo, and a Justicar answering challenges with the extra initiative point granted by the helbard, these guys can appear from deep strike, lay down a mess of fire and then charge into battle fearing very little indeed. It was also the first time I put my brush to the task of making those swords look bluish and interesting. I think it turned out alright.

Grey Knights Purifiers

Grey Knights Purifiers

I also tend to take Castellan Crowe with my Grey Knights which means I can take Purifiers as troops. This is my favourite group of them, and they usually roll into battle in a Lasback, just to give them a bit of cover against the big nasties that they might run into.
I’ll try and get some more pics of the rest of the army sometime soon, so stay tuned for more Grey Knights goodness. Onwards!

My 40k Wishlist for 2014

20131226-131605.jpg

This has been a great 12 months of 40k, and, being a hopeless optimist, I’m really looking forward to the next 12. Alas, I’m a little long in the tooth to be penning letters to Jolly Old Saint Nick regarding what I’d like for Christmas (besides, he’s quite obviously some form of Tzeentchian daemon), but I still have some wishes. As well as all the ‘peace on earth’ and ‘win the lottery’ nonsense, I have a fair few desires that centre around 40k in 2014. Here are a few of the bits and pieces that’d make me as happy as a Snotling on Krissmas…

20131226-131839.jpg

A year of hordes
2013 and the start of 6th has been dominated by Elite armies getting their new books. Now, I’m not a horde player, but as someone who takes a variety of Elite Armies into battle, I love killing hordes. Not because I believe that they’re easier to kill – far from it – but because they’re fun to take on. With Nids, Orks and Guard all due to get new codices, people like me get our favourite opposition updated and with new units, weapons and rules, there’s always more fun to be had through playing and learning. Whether it’s my Grey Knights fighting a swarm of nids, or my Death Guard holding off the green tide, these are my favourite challenges and I can’t wait to take on the newly updated armies throughout the year. I’m just really hoping they get some fun new units and rules to make those encounters even more fun.

20131226-132311.jpg

New and Revived game types
The big boy and lil’un of game types have already arrived in the form of Apocalypse and Kill Team, and we got Escalation and Stronghold Assault thrown into the bargain. That’s pretty good for variety, but the game type I’d love to see an update to is Cities of Death. Of all the old books, Cities of Death was by far my favourite. It offered a host of great little rules and offered so much scope for terrain and figure converting and building, and the games were brilliant fun. If GW could bring me this is in the new year, I’d be ecstatic. What’s more, I can’t wait to see the other plans. I can’t wait to see the new game types they put forward. Here’s hoping they come up with some good’uns!

20131226-132658.jpg

More amazing models – in plastic
We got some crackers in 2013. From the gargantuan Wraithknight and Riptide, to the more standard-sized Farseers, Space Marine Captains and Daemonic Heralds, we were blessed over the last 12 months. We’re in a Golden Age of miniatures and have come so far from static poses and limited sizes. What’s more, we’re seeing far less Finecast in the releases each month. For all its promise and potential, it came with as many bubbles and breakages and now that GW are heading more into the world of plastic characters, I’m even more optimistic for the new year.

20131226-132917.jpg

Forge World to keep Forge-worlding
I am a huge fan of Forge World and I don’t want them to change a bit. I just want them to keep creating their wonderful, amazing minis. I want more Contemptors, more Grav Tanks, more IA books, more, more, more! If I’m going to go broke buying plastic crack, let it be the very finest of Forge World.
So that’s what I want. How about you? Stick a comment below and let me know what you want to see in 2014. Onwards!

Kill Team List Building

kill team die hard

Having got the new Kill Team supplement (as reviewed yesterday), I was itching to get home last night and start trawling through my codices to start coming up with some lists. Well, I only got to go through three (out of five) of them as I may have ended up in the pub and then watching Die Hard (best Christmas film ever!) while eating pizza. But I have got three teams that I want to try out from Daemons, Grey Knights and Space Marines. They’re not necessarily the best, but I reckon I could have some fun with them. Here are my ideas…

Chaos daemon star

Chaos Daemons: Slaaneshi Barmy Army

10x Daemonettes (including one Aluress with 10 points of lesser gifts)

3x Fiends of Slaanesh

In the immortal words of Blackadder’s foolish yet charming sidekick Baldrick, I have a cunning plan which will probably end up being a little foolish too. Daemons will have to have a lot of work to do in Kill Team, no longer being able to pop into existence due to reserves not being a part of the game. That means they’ll have plenty of ground to cover with just their 5+ Invun save to keep them safe (using cover intelligently will be key too). So, assign three USRs to the fiends and make your opponent more concerned about them than the Daemonettes. Fiends don’t get much love these days so there may be an air of unfamiliarity from your opponent and they’re still big scary beasts and should attract the majority of any fire coming your way. And then (sneaky sneaky) your daemonettes get in charge range and destroy the enemy in close combat with their flurry of attacks. Interesting?

Inquisition seal

Grey Knights: Pure Gold

6x Purifiers (including Justicar)

Purifiers suited and booted with: 1x Incinerator, 2x sets of falchions, 2x Daemon Hammers

Justicar rocking: mastercrafted stormbolter, helbard, digital weapons

And everybody gets Psybolt ammo!

Now this is my kind of list! I’m more a fan of really small, elite kill teams and these guys will be joyous to fight with. Lots of attacks, lots of pretty strong shots, a template weapon and a couple of hammers. I can’t find anything I don’t like about this one. I even had a handful of points left over to give the Justicar digital weapons! Boom.

Ultramarines symbol

Space Marines: Scout Manoeuvred

5x Scouts (including a Sgt)

Wielding: Camo cloaks, sniper rifles, missile launcher and the Sarge gets a power weapon too.

5x Scouts (including a Sgt)

Wielding: Camo cloaks, sniper rifles, missile launcher and the Sarge gets a power weapon too.

No, I didn’t mistakenly type that twice. This ten man wall of pain will be great, especially against armies relying on their hand to hand abilities. These guys already come with a whole mess of USRs that are great for Kill Team games anyway (Stealth and Move Through Cover being two of them that might be particularly useful) and in this collection, you’ve got a bit of everything. A whole mess of gunfire, the versatile hull cracking or blast marker placing missiles and a little additional close combat strength for the sergeants. Should make for a bit of fun if nothing else.

What are your thoughts on the above lists? Love them or hate them? Stick a comment below either way, and feel free to pop in your own ideas too!

Product Review: Kill Team

warhammer 40000 kill team

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the Games Workshop/Black Library Advent Calendar this year. For a company often derided for the way it treats its fans, this was a lovely surprise that’s had people taking all December (especially about a certain Dark Angel who may or may not appear in the next couple of days, so the rumours say). I’ve read a couple of the short stories now (Typhus and Abaddon) and they’re nice little pieces which are well worth the £0.99 price tag if you’re a fan of those particular heroes. But the big winner, for me, has to be Kill Team. Best. Advent. Calendar. Ever.

For those unfamiliar with Kill Team, this is pretty much the smallest 40k you can play. I’ve occasionally indulged in a lunch hour, and I know many others who do the same. 200pts of minis from either troops, elites or fast attack. It’s a really fun little game that first appeared at the back of the Battle Missions book many years ago now, and it made the money back from the price of the book in enjoyment alone.

Well, for less than a fiver, you can get the brand new incarnation of Kill Team for your mobile/tablet device and enjoy an excellently updated version. Let’s dive in and I’ll reveal what I can about the booklet.

As soon as you hit the introduction page, you can see that this has moved far beyond the one-pager that used to set down the rules for a kill team game. As well as the points limitations, there are some special sets of rules for Dark Eldar, Daemons, CSM and Necrons that make them a little more suitable for the game. Speaking as someone that plays CSM, the slight rule adjustment for them is brilliant as my champions will no longer have to challenge everyone. That makes me very happy.

The game is designed for a 4’x4’ table making it easier to set up. Most kitchen tables can be set up with coke cans and milk bottles for terrain if you just need any old space to play, which is another reason why Kill Team is great.

We also get Universal Warlord Traits, called ‘Leader Traits’ for the purposes of Kill Team. There are six and all of them look pretty useful so no disappointment really. And another great move has been to stop people spamming the same sort of special rules for their ‘specialists’. For those who don’t know, you’re allowed to pick three members of your Kill Team (excluding your Leader) and assign them a USR. The USRs have now been split into five sections that range from Combat Specialist to Dirty Fighter. None of your three specialists can have USRs from the same section meaning that we should see a lot more interesting combos in each game. I’ve taken a long look at the table and if I’m honest, there are plenty of tough decisions to make here, but tough for good reasons.

As well as a small host of other rules that help to make Kill Team games a little more sensible, there are six new Missions for this game type. These look really fun and I could happily spend an afternoon trying out each one with various teams.

All in all, this is a great little book and I can see no problems for any force really (though pop a comment down if you’ve got any worries). I was worried that by adding to the small ruleset, GW would overcomplicate the easiest type of game we have, but they haven’t. For those who decry the company for its perceived lack of playtesting (which I really don’t adhere to), this will be a refreshing little clutch of missions and rules that can lead to some real fun. I highly recommend picking up this mini-tome.

In a year that has seen the mega battles of Apocalypse, enormous points-heavy miniatures and the new Escalation expansion, it’s really refreshing to see Kill Team make a comeback too. If you treat yourself to one little thing from the Advent Calendar this year, make it this – it’s half hours of fun!

p.s. I’m going to go through the codices I own a little later and try to build some hypothetical teams and I’ll post up my results here. Onwards!

Basing Basics: Making Sand Look Sandy

simpsons filming horses

there’s a grain of truth there…

Basing miniatures is not everyone’s cup of tea. Some people don’t bother at all, while others simply paint the plastic green or brown. Well, I’m hear to help with a series of posts that will be called Basing Basics. There are loads of wonderful and amazing examples of bases all over the net that utilise advanced techniques and take days to construct. These articles are just going to show you the very (very) basics and maybe we’ll do some more advanced bits and pieces later.

To start with, we’re going to look at sand. You can pick this up at any modelling shop and just cover your bases in it. And there’s nothing wrong with leaving it at that, except that it doesn’t end up looking like sand. I always thought it looked like porridge, so unless your army is battling on Oatius Prime in the Segmentum Cerealus, you need to do a bit of work.

It’s really quick and easy to make sand look like sand and I’m going to use my old Eldar Warlock to help illustrate this. Let’s dive in.

Step 1:

eldar warlock

Simple as. Cover your base in an even coating of PVA glue (not too much) and dip your mini into the sand. Leave it to dry and watch the porridge take shape.

Step 2:

warlock basing

Once the sand is dry, using a larger brush, cover the base in a flesh wash. I used Citadel’s Reikland Flashshade. Once all the porridge is covered, leave it to dry thoroughly.

Step 3:

sandy base for minis

Take an old brush (because the rough sand will knacker the point of a good one) and a sandy coloured paint (this is Citadel’s Zamesi Desert) and dry brush the whole thing. Make sure you let a little of the darker colour come through.

Step 4:

sand based minitaure

When that layer has dried, mix equal parts Zamesi Desert and Bleached Bone (or equivalents) and dry brush again to highlight. Don’t go over all of it, just a few bits here and there. You only need a tiny bit to bring out a lot more depth.

Step 5:

eldar warlock

To finish off, a bit of Dryad Bark (dark brown) around the sides of the base, and you’re done! This last step just makes the whole thing look a little better on a desert table and gets rid of the last bit of bare, black plastic.

Well, how simple was that!? This is a really quick technique (that barely deserves the name) and though you’re not going to win the Crystal Brush with it, it may help your army look a little better on the table top and really add a finishing touch to your minis. Anyway, I hope some of you will find this a bit useful at least – let me know by popping a comment below. Onwards!

In Defence Of: The Callidus Assassin

Calidus Assassin

Callidus Assassin

=][= In a new type of article, I shall offer some defence of units that often get overlooked. They may not be the best when you apply mathhammer into the mix, but for a fluffhead like me, sometimes the underdogs are more fun. Let me know what you think of it below! =][=

Ah, the slender, stealthy Callidus Assassin. It’s a shame that she’s maligned in the way that she is. Often seen as useless and a waste of points, I’ve come to rely on this lady (or amorphous shapeshifter, or whatever ‘she’ is) to provide real game changing moments for my Grey Knights. It wasn’t what I wanted, but this is how it turned out.

As you’ll come to realise as you use this blog, I tend to build armies far more based on fluffy principles than ‘must win’ ideals. If I like the model, and the stories around them, I’m more likely to pick it based on those principles than whether it’s going to do well. So it was with the Callidus assassin. I remember a few stories that were really well written and I love the model so when I was building out my Grey Knights army, I went for the Calidus.

Now, part of the Callidus’ problem is the Vindicare. As assassins go, he’s indisputably the better pick. The fact that his pistol packs the same punch as his rifle, and the rifle is pretty much one of the best personal arms in the game means that there isn’t really much of a choice to make if you want the best assassin. It can take out HQs, armour and everything in between. I’ll concede right here, right now, that the Vindicare rules the assassins’ roost.

As for the others, they’re not so much of a problem. The Culexus, I find, is highly situational – very useful if you’re up against heavy psychic armies, but next to useless otherwise (slight over exaggeration perhaps but undeniably in the right ball-park), and despite the fluff indicating that the Eversor is a raging-psychopath of a super-human, the rules make him far less formidable. But the Calidus has some pretty good tricks up her sleeve. Let me tell you of the first couple of games she played in…

-=-=-=-

1. Grey Knights vs Death Guard (2000pts)

Being a sometimes Death Guard player myself, I thought I could handle this one. I ended up getting tabled due to seriously horrendous dice-rolls and some school-boy tactical errors. My opponent had a big chunk of Nurgle Termies escorting Typhus across the board and they were looking unstoppable. As mentioned, my rolling had been woeful and these guys were hammering their way through the field causing all sorts of problems.

I get to bring in my Callidus on turn four. She pops up just a couple of inches away from the terminators, gets plenty of attacks (the one good roll I had that game) and kills two of them. The Neural shredder does nothing though.

Rather insultingly, Typhus et al decide to ignore her and trundle off after my Librarian and Termies in what promised to be a big showdown in the middle of the table (but ended up with my lousy rolling turning it into a bit of a one-sided waste of time).

A Flying Daemon Prince touched down that turn too, so when it came to my next go, I ran her straight into it. She died pretty much instantly.

As mentioned, I was a bit stupid with that one but I saw a spark. She took out two terminators where all others had failed.

2. Grey Knights vs Eldar (1850pts)

Just before the last Eldar Dex release, I took on another of the armies that I was relatively familiar with – the Eldar. I actually won this game (by the skin of my teeth) and one of the all star performances again was my Callidus.

I learned a good little trick this time and when she popped up in the third turn again, her task was to deal with a group of Fire Dragons that was about to run from cover and melt a Razorback. Another high roll for attacks, she appeared two inches off the squad with the Exarch in front. He, and three others fell to the blade while the neural shredder did for the remaining two. Good dice helped of course but I was actually giddy with happiness after that.

And then a wave serpent shot her with a missile and that was the end of that.

-=-=-=-

This happened through several games. Against Orks, Tau and more CSM lists, she’d pop up, cause a nice chunk of damage, and proceed to get munched almost immediately. Yes, it’s annoying that she kept dying, but she never failed to alter the game. Whether it meant an opposing squad had to spend a whole turn dealing with her when they could have been doing something else, or her actually taking down a whole squad, she’s always done me proud.

The real winner is that chunk of attacks she does as soon as she enters, out of sequence with the rest of the game. Get a good roll for that and you can dish out a pasting with her high initiative and weapon skill. Deal with any squad’s commander in that and the rest lost his leadership value when you hit them with the neat little template weapon she sports. It’s a one-trick pony sort of attack, and once she’s out in the open she’s a bit of a paper tiger, but the shock value and initial impact makes for a great moment in any game.

So, it’s not the strongest defence in the world. As mentioned, the Vindicare will almost certainly do better through a whole game, but I wouldn’t swap my Callidus for anything. If nothing else, she’s been highly entertaining, and for me, that’s almost better than her being a good unit.

However, I don’t think it’s a bad use of points if you know how to use her. Taking out a couple of Terminators, or a full squad of Fire Dragons makes quite a lot of points back and can swing a game. If you’re scared of a certain unit, dump a Callidus on them. Worst comes to worst they’ll have to spend a turn or two killing her and they’re unlikely to survive unscathed. Not many opponents relish dealing with her.

For pure fun, high entertainment game-changing moments (*whispers* that may cost you a kill point), accept no substitutes. Or get a Vindicare and kill everyone.
