Mortifactors Vanguard Veteran with Lightning Claws and Jump Pack

The fourth of my Mortifactors Vanguard Veterans has landed, and boy was he a toughie! Ever had one of those models that just everything goes wrong on? So many things, throughout painting this one seemed to go wrong. Going over edges, not getting my blending right, the point of my brush splitting… it all occurred. If it hadn’t been for the shoulder pads and claws looking quite nice, I wouldn’t have been very happy with this one at all.

Trying to find other plus points… well, there are a few details I like but nothing big. But it sits well in the squad and the overall look of the squad and that’s the most important thing. When the last member is completed, the big, bad Sgt, I’ll get the good camera out and take a couple of snaps of the whole bunch. On that note, he may take a while. I don’t intend to have an extended break from these guys, but I need some time off as I’m getting really sick of painting bone again. Also, I’ve got some interesting plans for the next guy (well, slightly interesting) and I want to do him justice.

Anyway, here are a couple more snaps. This mini was undercoated black, Citadel Paints were used throughout and my trusty Series 7 000 did most of the brushwork.

Product Review: Visions of Heresy – A Monster of a Book!

Visions of Heresy

Prepare yourselves for I am about to have a proper gush about a new book from Games Workshop and Black Library because, well, it’s awesome. Visions of Heresy is an astounding tome and a real luxury purchase for any fans of the most monumental saga in 40k history.

On Wednesday, I popped into my local Games Workshop (Oxford Street Plaza for them who’s asking) for a small bottle of superglue and, as so often happens, I ended up spending over £60, the bulk of which was taken up by this big shiny book. It ain’t cheap. At £45.00, that’s a Codex and a half, but what you get is the most comprehensive and lovingly compiled collection of Horus Heresy inspired artworks that you’ll ever see.

I’m actually quite chuffed that I allowed my love of shiny things to obscure my senses and convince me to shell out for this work. The typical buyer’s remorse that oft accompanies these sort of purchases burned away like so much prometheum through the nozzle of a heavy flamer as soon as I turned the book over, still in its protective, clear wrapping and saw the back cover. Worth taking a peak if you’ve not done so already.

Alan Merrett has filled over 400 pages with astounding artwork, all grouped by legion, history or event. To see the iconic and beautiful work of John Blanche, Adrian Smith and Neil Roberts in all this glossy glory would be worth the price alone, but there are images from such a wide range of artists that it’s simply incredible to behold. Each set of images is accompanied by historical notes and diagnosis from Merrett and the whole thing ties up to be an overwhelming collection of fantastic fluff and imaginative artwork.

shut up and take my money

In fact, if I had a single criticism to make, it might be that this collection is simply too big to take in in its entirety. I’ve had a couple of days to pour over it (and I have poured) and I still finding new gems within the pages.

Particular highlights for me include the collections of work on the Custodes (hurry Forge World – make them now!!) and, though I’m a fan of neither legion or chapter in terms of the minis I collect, the collections regarding Prospero, the Wolves and the Sons are all real treats. From basic sketches to more stylised images, everything here is a grimdark joy for a fluff-head like what I am.

I should also say that there is certainly scope for more artwork. As Blanche and Roberts particularly create more and more fantastic images and sketches, and as the Black Library books flesh out more and more of the stories, we’re sure to have a sequel tome appearing in the future. For one thing, I was slightly annoyed at the lack of Nightlords images and would love to see some new, dark depictions of Curze in all his sadistic glory.

This book is by no means a necessity, but if you are a fan of fluff and the artwork that is produced around it, and if you have a spare chunk of cash in your budget, I heartily recommend picking up this beautiful luxury.

Mortifactors Vanguard Veteran with Power Sword and Bolt Pistol

Mortifactors Vanguard Veteran with Power Sword and Bolt Pistol

I’m over half way! The third of my five Vanguard Veterans is done and on the shelf. This guy is wielding the longer of the power swords that comes in the kit and one of the venerated bolt pistols. You’ll also see another great couple of examples of the shoulder pads you get in this box. The head on the other hand comes from the new tactical squad box and, if I’m being honest, I didn’t quite nail the red lenses on this one. I may even revisit them later and attempt a minor fix.

I’m increasingly convinced that this is the best work I’ve done so far on any infantry models and I’m almost tempted to build up a scenic base and put these guys into a competition. I’m not sure that I’d win but I think they’re good enough to show off at a higher level. I’ve now just got to make sure that the last two members of the squad match the standards I’ve set for myself.

Regardless, here are a couple more pictures for you to enjoy. As with the others, this model was undercoated black, Citadel Paints and the Windsor & Newton Finest Sable Series 7 000 brush was used throughout. Onwards!

Mortifactors Vanguard Veteran with Lightning Claws

Mortifactors Vanguard Veteran with Lightning Claws

I am returned to you, much refreshed from a short break in foreign parts and I come bearing a new addition to my Mortifactors Vanguard Veterans squad. This space marine is rocking a set of weathered bronze lightning claws that are ready to rip his opponents limb from limb. I’ve never been a particular fan of the claws – just something with to do with the general aesthetic – but I actually got into painting these ones and I think they suit this guy pretty well. The give him the look of a venerated yet feral predator, and that’s exactly what he should look like.

I’m really happy with all the parts of the arm, from the shoulder pads to the tips of those dangerous claws. And I think I got the eyes right again. I was also quite happy with the loral wreath around the head even though it was very simply done – I just thought it looked quite good. Anyway, here are a few more images for you to enjoy. He was undercoated black, Citadel paints were used throughout and I used that same Series 7 000 brush that has really become my go-to set of bristles. On to the next one!

Daemon Herald of Nurgle – Another One!

Forge World’s Daemon Herald of Nurgle

A welcome bit of slime. Yesterday, I delved into my most recent Forge World splurge and fished out this Daemon Herald. It was a really fun miniature to work on and offers lots of organic and mechanic components to stretch the repertoire. I’m exceptionally happy with my work on that rusted mechanical claw that you can see a little better here…

daemon herald with mechanical claw

So much rust! All of this was achieved with copper and iron-coloured undercoating which was then slathered in inks and Citadel technical paints (Corrosion, Rust and a little bit of Oxide) and then highlighted with Steel colours. Great fun and I’m super happy with the way that came out.

On the rest of the model, I’m really happy with the bloating organs and the trail of slime achieved using Citadel’s Nurgle’s Rot. Here are a couple more shot for your enjoyment.

Now, a couple of other thoughts and closing remarks. Firstly I was a little surprised at how big this guy is – I really thought it sat on a standard infantry base but as you can see below, he’s a hefty fellow…

daemon herald size

He’s a chunky guy and looks great with the rest of my Nurgle followers. Yet another nice surprise than

Now, you may already know but the only way to get this Herald is to buy the big Daemon Prince, Mamon, and yes, he is currently being put together, cleaned and prepared. He’s going to take a while so you might have to wait on him.

You’ll also have to wait as I’m off on holiday tomorrow, heading to foreign parts to enjoy some sun, some time away from work and some curious cuisine. That all means that there won’t be much (or probably any) posts next week. Normal service shall be resumed when I have a tan.

And, finally, this marks 50 posts on Heresy and Heroes! Just a little landmark to give you there. May Grandfather Nurgle, She Who Thirsts, Khaine and the Divine Emperor permit a lot more!

How I Paint Bone – A Quick Walkthrough

Posted by johnnya10 on 07/03/2014

edge highlight rusty knife

Some of you have asked me how I paint the bone on my Mortifactors Space Marines and, as a friday treat, I’ve decided to walk you through it. Using one of the Vanguard Vets that I’m currently working on, I’m going to take you through how I create the warm bone look with all the cracks and chips that have appeared on my models. It’s not a quick process and there are probably better ways of doing it out there, but this is the way I do it, for better or for worse. Let’s dive in.

1. Undercoat it black

black undercoat on space marine

This is actually a relatively important step. You may argue that it doesn’t get seen but I’ve tried using a lighter undercoat and it really does look better on black. It gives an extra layer of depth that effects the colour throughout and so I would recommend going this way.

2. Slap on the Bone

screaming skull

Apply Screaming Skull (I’m using the Citadel paint range so will describe this technique using those terms) and keep it rough and thin. Plenty more layers to come and you want some of the shadow coming through from the black – it’ll give depth.

3. Wash it.

reikland fleshsahde

A generous slathering of Reikland Fleshshade. This is the last of those layers that’s really going to dictate the texture and it’ll provide some shadow too. Be liberal, especially around any edges and recesses.

4. More Bone!

how to paint bone

Now go over it again with Screaming Skull. Make sure that the paint is thick enough to hold together and keep its consistency, but thin enough to be smooth and allow some of that texture through from below. A tiny amount of water is all it takes. Don’t go into the recesses – leave those to give a bit of definition and shadow.

5. Crack it

paint cracked bone

Right, now for the cracks. Using a very fine brush, use Rhinox Hide and draw on any cracks and chips you want to appear on the bone. Don’t do too many – an accent is better than overwhelming detail.

6. Add Shadow

technique for painting bone

To add the shadow, use the Reikland Fleshshade and pull a tiny amount down over the cracks, ensuring that it is more on the upper edges of those cracks than the lower ones because that’s where the natural shadow would be if we’re working to the idea that the light is coming downwards.

7. Add Light

bone legs

The final step! Using a mix of equal measures Screaming Skull and White Scar, and your finest brush again, apply to the undersides of the cracks, and all around the edges of the painted area. And that’s it!

500 points of mortifactors

So much bone!!

So, that’s how I paint the bone on my miniatures. There are far better painters and lots of other techniques out there, but I hope this one has been helpful or at least interesting. Any comments or questions, please add them below!

Mortifactors Vanguard Veteran with Power Sword

The very first of my Mortifactors Vanguard Veterans has rolled off the production line and I’m really happy with him. It’s a lot of old techniques that we’re all familiar with from my previous posts, but as I’ve mentioned previously, this is one of my favourite kits so I wanted to show off my early efforts.

vanguard vet with power sword

One thing that I don’t like in the recent kits that have been released for the Space Marines in the last wave are the power swords. There’s one in the Vanguard Vets set that I like, out of two and I’m saving that, so for this mini, I used a Grey Knights sword. Happily, I’ve got quite a few left over as Grey Knights have a lot more fun weapons.

On this model, I’m really happy with the glowing eyes, the Crux Terminatus on the shoulder pad, the colouring on the sword and the Aquila shoulder pad. Actually, the shoulder pads in the Van Vets kit are really good – lots of Terminator Crosses and cool sculpts. Anyway, you’ll see some more of those as I continue with the squad. Here are a few more pictures for you:

The model was undercoated black, painted using Citadel Paints and a Windsor & Newton Series 7 Finest Sable 000 brush. Watch this space for the rest of the squad to appear in the coming weeks!

The Sound And The Fury – The CSM Updates We Need!

Posted by johnnya10 on 04/03/2014

Rumour has it that we’ll be seeing a brand new Helbrute (note the spelling!) hitting the shelves in the next couple of weeks and that’s pretty cool. We’re also getting a lot of the Chaos Squads and units reboxed in the modern packaging according to the leaked release schedule that you can read the ‘confirmation’ over on bols right now.

The ‘Brute kit is a welcome addition to the CSM range. The old Chaos Dread was a clunky rippoff of the older loyalist model and looked very out of place. Besides, its looks had long been second rate due to the Legion-specific models available on Forge World (including my own sonic dread as pictured below).

dreadnought freehand

The Helbrute was one of the main reasons that I shelled out for the Dark Vengeance box in the first place. There’s plenty to love in that box but the big scary monster was the one I wanted more than any other. I then proceeded to screw up the paint job a bit in making it part of my Death Guard force but it still sees game-time on a relatively regular basis (though is not pictured here because it wasn’t worth taking a photo of).

Anyway, I think it’s great that this kit is being released and I hope the Chosen and Cultists in the same boxed set get a proper release in the near future too with different options etc. But there are two units in the Chaos Space Marine codex that are crying out, desperate for a new release. These are what I would like to see…

The Sound – New Noise Marines

old noise marine

Or my dear, sweet Noise Marines. Time has not been kind to you. Even with your new plastic bits, you just look like bog standard Chaos Space Marines with, well, different plastic bits stuck on you. There is so much that could be done with your doom sirens, blastmasters and sonic blasters. We don’t need to revisit the almost-comedy ‘rock-band-of-the-future’ look (as seen above), but something more in line with the current themes. Curl those spikes more, add the flamboyant flourishes that would be oh-so-Slaanesh, while keeping the ‘grimdark’ theme of the CSM too. It can be done. Somewhere between the Lucius model and Forge World’s Legion Kakophoni would be about right.

noise marine bits

But whatever happens, it would be great to have a kit that I could walk into a store and pick up. It would make resurrecting my Emperor’s Children a much more pleasant experience anyway.

how to make good noise marines

The Fury – New Berserkers

khorne berzerker squad box

Now, as a Slaaneshi/Nurgling (lapsed) I am no fan of Khorne but it saddens me to see the Berserkers looking so dated now. Their helmets are almost comic-book compared to newer models and don’t quite fit in with the current range. What’s more, their armour isn’t very Khorney and their poses and axes… basically, they look weak compared to the newer miniatures in this army and those in others. As much as I don’t like Khorne, and even if they’re not as good a unit, tactically speaking, as they used to be, it’s sad to see one of Chaos’ most iconic units looking so old and out-of-place. They should have more chains, more variation in their axes and meathooks all over them. They should be scratched and caked in gore. More Kharn, and less Kharn not!

kharn illustration

They need a boost to their looks because no-one’s buying them for their rules. Those devilish monsters of Blood God worshipping, axe-wielding psychopaths need some love.

how to make good berserkers

That’s what I want to see released for CSM. Make me happy, GW, and bring these kits into the 21st Century and the they’ll return to the 41st Millennium too.

How about you? What other kits, in CSM or other armies really need an update? Comments and thoughts below.

WIPs of the Week

no new painting

Well, this is quite a thing. For the first time in a while, I have no shiny, freshly painted minis to show you on a monday morning. Standards are slipping around here obviously. I had a few things to do this weekend and barely had a chance to sit at my desk and get my paintbrush wet. What’s more, there’s not much fun left in the backlog. Dire times.

However, I have taken some steps to ensure that in the coming weeks and months, I’ll have plenty of awesome sauce to drizzle on your screens on a regular basis. Here’s a quick look at what I’ll be bringing to you in the not too distant (and hopefully not too ‘grimdark’) future…

Vanguard Vets

van vets

These guys may be a little ‘sub-optimal’ (as if that ever really meant anything to me!) on the table top, but they’re one of my favourite kits that GW currently produce, and they look fearsome too. These guys will be escorting my Captain into battle and will be built as close-combat specialists with power swords and lightning claws. Oh, and speaking of weapons, you get sooo many on these sprues – I’m drowning in thunder hammers over here! So, very early days as you can see by these pictures, but they’ll be the next edition to my Mortifactors force. Watch this space for further updates.

Relic

relic game

One of my favourite boardgames ever was the original Talisman. It’s exciting and lots of fun too with so much depth to play. When GW and Fantasy Flight announced that they would be releasing Relic, a 40k-themed version, I was very happy. Then I saw the bust that they released and had very happy nerd-crisis. I saw it in a store on saturday morning and just couldn’t resist it. And I’ve set myself the challenge of painting all of the busts before I allow myself to play the game so that’ll keep me working hard over the coming weeks.

Here are the busts…

relic busts

…and here’s the very early WIP on the Ultramarine.

ultramarine bust wip

I started with him because I realised that I’ve never painted a Smurf before and that seemed shocking. I’m really looking forward to painting the Sister, the Rogue Trader and the Ogryn but all the busts look great. And you’ll see them all painted up first here.

Forgeworld

Where the pretty things come from…

I treated myself. I had a minor splurge. I’m going to keep schtum about what exactly will be winging its way to me but rest assured, when it gets painted, you will see it here first. As always, watch this space and thanks for reading!

What’s on your WIP list? What do you think of my dastardly plans? Comments, questions and more below please.

The Scope of Knights

40k Knight Errant

=][= Addendum: Most of this article is unverified and likely erroneous – you have been warned. The Emperor Protects. =][=

The day is almost upon us. Those big shiny knights will be stomping onto battlefields across the world from this weekend and I think it’s awesome. The fact that the models which once could only be imagined in 5mm scale are now rocking up to 40k is brilliant. Will I be picking one up on Saturday, first thing? No. Not because I don’t want one (I really, really do) but I have other plans afoot (which you’ll see here first) and my investing in a Knight will come later in the year.

Things are moving fast now. The weekly release schedule is amazing and so much better than the month-long wait for rumours to come to fruition that we had before. It also means that GW are churning out much more and will need more to fill these release slots. There’s all the updates and new Codices (Guard, Orks and more slated for this year) and some kits that really need updating which we’re all more hoping for than expecting.

And then there’s the Knights. We’re getting a Codex which surely will have more than just two models (Paladin and Errant), right? There are plenty more variants that could be revisited from Epic and given the already successful release of the new kit (and it’s not even out yet!) surely, we’ll see more. Well, once again revisiting Epic, let’s examine how it could happen and what GW already have to work with.

Lancers and Barons

epic knights lancer and baron

Both of these patterns are slimmer in their chassis than the newly released Knights. The Lancer was built for speed while the Baron is more of a slender, Master-Crafted construct. In the Epic games they also both shared the powerful Power Lance close-combat weapon and the Battle Cannon as well. So it would seem like a good fit for a dual kit. In the same way Chaos Raptors and Warp Talons share a kit and are separated by just a small number of components that result in very different looks, the same effect could be achieved with this kit. I’d love to see these guys in the Codex too.

Crusaders and Castellans

epic knights crusaders and castellans

These guys are practically identical. They’re the big, bulky ones who sit in the backfield with two big guns each and fire volley after volley at your opponents. The only difference between them is that Castellans used an Autocannon (which would now probably be represented by an assault cannon), while the Crusaders used Lascannons. They both get the very badass Quake Cannon which is usually spotted on a Warlord Titan!! Both would be naturals for a Heavy Support slot if the new Codex follows the usual Force Org chart (though there’s every reason to believe that it won’t).

Wardens

Knight Warden

Everyone has a soft spot for the old Wardens. The fluff dictates that when a Knight Pilot grows too old for active deployment (except in the most extreme circumstances), he is placed in a Warden construct. His role changes to being more of a teacher and knight-apothecary but he still gets a big gun or two in case his services as a warrior are required again. To be honest, I’d imagine these wouldn’t see the light of day, purely because GW seems to have gone in a slightly different direction from this sort of older fluff. That being said, I’d love to see them come back, and they could provide a useful role and, furthermore, who knows what GW are going to be doing with this army!?

What would the Army Options/Force Org Chart look like then?

What would that Army List look like?

HQs

Baron

Warden

Troops

Paladin

Errant

Fast Attack

Lancer

Heavy Support

Castellan

Crusader

Elites

Named/Character Knights(?)

Again, this could all be horse-feathers and balderdash. They’re likely to completely deviate from this with the new Codex, but it goes to show that you could do something like this if you wanted to.

Anything new?

In Epic, there were never any purely CC-orientated Knights. The Lancers and Barons were the closest thing you got but they weren’t purely dedicated to it (in fact, as I recall it, the lance was almost a last resort as the speed was used to get the battle cannon into good range), so there’s scope there. Other than that, I’m not sure where they’d go with this, but I look forward to finding out.

If not, can you really have a Codex for just two models?

Well, maybe. All of the above is most likely a case of wishful thinking and there’s every chance we really will only see Errant and Paladin patterns in this edition. The Codex may not be in the ilk that we are familiar with. Putting the fluff to one side for a moment, rules-wise we could see options for taking a Knight army, an allies matrix and then specific rules for each of those allies. Maybe Errants can’t ally with Eldar but Palladins gain fleet – who knows? We may also get info on houses that have fallen to Chaos and there are rumours of Mechanicum-dedicated houses and mercenary houses will have different rules. Only a couple of days and most, if not all, will be revealed…

So what do you reckon? Will all of this be consigned to wishful thinking and be totally wrong come the weekend? Or do you reckon I got it spot on? Comments below please!
