Death Guard

A little while ago, Henry South very kindly took a few snaps of various models of mine and I’m now showing them off here. In this first collection are a few of the elements that make up my Death Guard Chaos Space Marine force. I’ve got about 4,000 points of Grandfather Nurgle’s favourite sons so these are just the highlights.

I always described my Death Guard army as being “just-post-heresy” because that allowed me to work a lot with dingy whites and green hints, rather than the completely corrupted and mould-covered Death Guard of M41. Here are my better pieces…

Typhus, Herald of Nurgle

Typhus, Herald of Nurgle

The Big Man on Terminus (Est), Typhus is a beast on the boards and the model is easily my favourite of the Chaos Space Marines characters. This is the old metal mini and it weighs a ton. I’ve been toying with the idea of buying the Finecast version, not only to make my carry-cases lighter, but also to see how far my painting has come on in the year since I painted this one.

Forge World’s conversion kit is brilliant and it was a joy to paint. Lots of little details all over the place and very Nurgly (Nurglish? Nurglesque?). These guys take the Nurgle Banner in the Codex, two meltas and the champion takes Melta bombs too, so they have very few problems beating up heavy armour and their extra slice of the toughness pie means they last longer than most.

Death Guard Heldrake

Death Guard Heldrake

Well, there had to be a Helturkey, didn’t there? I modelled him with the cannon, but, yes, I often take the flamer because, well, why wouldn’t you. It was fun carving out the tips of the wings but it took ages to paint and I was pretty sick of the sight of it after not too long. Has made the difference in many a game though, so can’t complain.

Blight Drones of Nurgle

Blight Drones of Nurgle

The rest of the airborne element of this army is comprised of these two Blight Drones. The model looks amazing (another bit of praise for FW there) but it’s a bit of a pain to put together without leaving gaps. You need to do a fair bit of shaving to get everything matched up neatly, but it’s worth it. Oh, and doing the slime coming out of the tail is a real pain so if you go that route (it does look so much better than the little flying stand) you need plenty of patience.

Plaguebearers of Nurgle

I really enjoyed painting these. Each one uses different shades of different colours and I felt suitably ill afterwards. They’re a great ally too, materialising where I need them most to really freak out the opposition forces and use those lovely poisoned blades to cause some real problems.

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to picture the rest of the force one day, but for now, these’ll have to do. Onwards!

Grey Knights Contemptor Dreadnought

Grey Knights Contemptor Dreadnought

My Grey Knights Contemptor Dreadnought

Well, this guy is the model that I have often referred to as my ‘Pride and Joy’ because I just think it’s one of the best things I ever did. I wanted a Psifleman Venerable Dreadnought for my Grey Knights force, largely to sit at the back of the table and provide AA cover and to deal with any armour that proves annoying. He’s done a great job in that respect,

This piece was made using the Relic Contemptor kit from Forge World and two autocannon arms. It’s a great kit to play with and I love the range of poses you can get from all of the Contemptors. The loin-cloth was taken from the Wraithlord kit, the head is just a standard Grey Knights Terminator head and bits of that Terminator kit have been used across the rest of the model. I used Citadel paints and brushes used include the Da Vinci 1505 Kolinsky Sable 0000 for details and larger brushes from the Daler Rowney System 3 range (great for large areas as they leave very few brush-stroke marks).

Mortifactors Space Marine: Colours and Heraldry

Mortifactors

When Codex: Space Marines was released, I was determined to try out some of the new kits that came with it and, as mentioned in an older post, as I hadn’t worked on a tactical squad since 2nd Edition, it made sense to start here. But me being me, sense didn’t come into it and instead I bought the Lord Executioner model because it looked freakin’ awesome. But what chapter?

I wanted something that I could have fun with, that wasn’t too restrictive and that I could really go to town on. That ruled all of the 1st Founders because we all have a very fixed idea of what they look like and any deviation, while cool, doesn’t quite sit right with me. They can look amazing, but on a purely personal note, If I see an Ultramarine that has a green helmet or purple hands, it doesn’t fit in my fluffy brain.

But which one!?

So it was to be a successor. I got out the above picture that was released some years ago and spent a good week deliberating and contemplating and all the rest. Having worked previously on Grey Knights and ‘Just-post-heresy’ Death Guard, Silver and White were both out. If you’re going to do red, you do Blood Angels (personal opinion, I know, but let’s not mess about), and all black seemed a little dull when I really wanted to push my painting. Some of the more brightly coloured ones looked a tad ridiculous so I managed to cut out quite a lot of options.

I guess the Mortifactors always stood out. Black, Bone and Gold/Yellow. It’s subtle, and yet still striking. And no other chapter seems to have it, so there was some uniqueness, and not many people were working on them either. I had freedom, a cool look to work with and then there was the skull.

skulls

If GW like one part of the human/xenos anatomy, it’s the skull. There’s skulls on everything, everywhere. From the Crux Terminatis to the Fortress of Redemption, from Mugan Ra to Mephiston, from the Herald of Khorne to Beastmasters and from Chaplains to the Silver Skulls, they’re all over everything. I therefore assumed it would be pretty easy to put Mortifactors heraldry all over everything, being that their main piece of iconography is the skull.

Of course, GW would do a skull shoulder pad to go with all the other skulls they put on everything, right? No. No they don’t. Well, they do the Silver Skulls pad but that has a very stylised ‘grilled’ mouth. Of all the things they don’t put actual skulls on! So, I was going to have to create my own.

This proved to be a blessing actually. It gave my imagination a chance to really work out and for me to practice my freehand skills. This is what I came up with…

skull shoulder pads

So many skulls!

Though the Mortifactors are a successor chapter of the Ultramarines, they couldn’t really be any further removed from them in terms of their actions and appearance. They regard the Codex Astartes as a good start, but have developed their own rules and ideas over the last 10,000 years and believe many of the concepts in that book to be, at best, unimaginative. This allowed me to play around with the idea that they all add their own personal interpretation of the Skull to their armour.  Each warrior would send time adding the skull to his own wargear before each battle, mixing their blood and the ash of Posul (their homeworld) into the paints.

I gave different elements of the shoulder pads – of the skulls – different meanings. Adding fire denoted special/heavy weapons specialists. The size of the skull denoted the length of their service to the chapter. Veteran Sgts and 1st Company replaced the yellow banding with metallic Gold. Some would have a bone and/or gold ‘M’ (either on its own or incorporated with the skull) to signify taking part in a specific campaign (as yet undecided by myself). And due to all of that, the below and above pictures should give you an idea of the variety that’s possible and how I’m doing this.

I’ll do another post about the fluff at a later date, but for now, it’d be great to get your feedback, so please leave a comment below. Onwards!

Mortifactors Tactical Space Marines

Mortifactors Space Marines

Mortifactors Tactical Squad

For my very first proper post here, I would like to present to you my Mortifactors Tactical Squad. Their Veteran Sgt is in the pipeline (something to do over Christmas) but if I do him justice, he’ll get his own post. So, it looks like I’m starting a Mortifactors army.

This is not what I had intended. The last army I finished was 2000pts of Grey Knights and when I was done, I was actually looking forward to trying some different things. I’m not the greatest of painters, but I like to test myself and learn new things so I wanted to try my arm at a few different pieces. When the space marines got their recent release, it occurred to me that I hadn’t actually painted a tactical squad since the days of 2nd Edition. This needed to be rectified. And I’ve got a Captain done too (will show him off soon) and a Scout Squad ordered.

I would like to say that the Tactical Squad sprues are amazing. So many options, easier to put together than previous kits (particularly the arms/bolters) and its great that a unit as basic as the humble Space Marine tactical squad has been given such a kit.

Tactically, I’ve gone with the Heavy Bolter and Flamer combo. The Mortifactors are an Ultramarine Successor and so their chapter tactics seem to lend themselves to tactical squads that can pour out as much firepower as possible (rerolling all those misses for one turn could be amazing at rapid fire range). Also, I’m saving the missile launcher that comes with this kit for my very AA devestator squad.

I’ll talk more about the fluff in a later post, but wanted to share this with you as the first post. Onwards and upwards!
