Ork Meganob

Ork Meganob with Power Klaw and Twin Linked Shoota

This is, in a small way, a momentous occasion. This is not only my first commission job (being paid in beer), but also the first ork that I’ve painted in 20 years! So, without further ado, let me introduce you to the first of five Ork Meganobz.

I could never paint a whole ork army. All those boyz… I can barely keep my attention going for five space marines, so a mob of forty boyz would drive me mad. When my buddy Gilberto asked me to paint up some of his army I was, therefore, a little hesitant. I said I’d do these guys because they’re a small unit and I am so glad that I did – this was tons of fun and the perfect break from my Mortifactors project. Let’s take a closer look…

meganob power klaw

I had only a couple of instructions – a bit of rust, red and black and urban base. So that’s what I worked to, and I love the results. The klaw shows off the rust, but the rear of the ork got plenty of corrosion work too. It’s a base of Leadbelcher, washed in Nuln Oil fading into Typhus Corrosion, brought back with some more Leadbelcher, a light flicking of Ryza Rust and then edged with Runefang Steel. I love the results and am looking forward to doing more with it.

meganob back

I’m really happy with the checks, the yellow/black wires and actually the ork skin too. My buddy wants them to have differing skin shades of green so I’ll work out some different techniques and if I hit any particularly good or unusual ones, I’ll post them up here.

So it’s on to the next one. More orky goodness, pictures and words coming your way soon – watch this space. This mini was undercoated with a light/dark blend, painted using citadel paints and I used Citadel and W&N brushes on this him – here’s one last shot for you to enjoy. Onwards!

Mortifactors Terminator Squad

Mortifactors Terminator Squad

Mortifactors Terminator Squad

Well, the gang’s all here then. Five of the sexiest Terminators I’ve ever painted, they are ready to take to the table and mess up armour and troops in equal measure.

On the plus side of things, I think that these guys possess some of the best ‘warm bone’ that I’ve done and I think I’ve now got the technique nailed down. I’m happy with the bases – simple but fitting and effective. I also got the processes nailed down by working out what to paint and in what sequence. This cut production time down massively without messing with quality control. It’s a great kit that’s fun to paint and not nearly as fiddly as I thought it would be.

On the down side of things, I made a rookie error early on – didn’t scrub the resin hard enough or check thoroughly enough for tags and cracks before painting. I’ve been using Forge World kits for years now and should know better. It doesn’t really effect the finished product but on a personal note, I could have made everything smoother and less annoying to paint. Also, that’s a lot of edge highlighting on black which I swear is the worst shade to work with because it’s the least forgiving if you mess up. I messed up plenty so had to spend a lot of time fixing things.

Overall, I’m very happy though. They look cracking even if I do say so myself (and yes, there is a slight pun in there). At any rate, here are a couple of pictures for you to enjoy. Next project will be along as soon as I can find some time to get into it. Onwards!

And they are done! All five Mortifactors Terminators are now completed and ready to take to the tabletop, and I’m here to show off the final two, including the sergeant who I’m particularly chuffed with. Let’s dive right in and take a proper gander.

skull shoulder pad terminator

I was kind of worried about him looking a bit too similar to the rest of the squad but a couple of things took care of those question marks. The sword (yes it is a little ‘not straight’ – it is a FW kit after all!) played a big part in this. It’s the only thing in the squad now rocking my, as someone else dubbed it, ‘trademark’ weathered bronze. He’s also got that little but of gold on his chest that just pops a tiny bit to push him into people’s eye-lines. One thing I should also say is that this is quite a good demonstration of how picking the right kit parts from a limited options set of ‘sprues’ plays a part. This guy is standing taller, stiller and has a commanding air to him that the others don’t and that really helps set him apart.

Annoyingly, of the five skull shoulder pads, this guy’s is the worst. I had my first major screw up doing these with this guy and though I’m happy with my rescue job, it could have been better. That being said, it fits into my own fluff ideas for this chapter so I can’t complain.

I didn’t want to leave this joker out. Even though he gets second billing here, I’m really happy with how he came out. All the usual likes and dislikes, etc. But given that this whole squad has taken me about a month to complete, I don’t want to miss showing off any part of their number.

mortifactors terminator storm bolter

Now, obviously, with these being #4 and #5, that means that the squad is done. Sexy shots are on the way as soon as I can get them done. In the meantime these will have to do. Also, this marks the 7th unit of Mortifactors for me – half of the number required to complete my 2000pt army (well, it works out as 1999pt actually but whatever). So, to celebrate, and give myself a little treat, what I paint next may come as a surprise. Keep checking this blog for updates!

Both minis were undercoated black, and painted using Citadel Paints and a W&N Finest Sable Series 7 000 brush throughout. Onwards!

Mortifactors Terminator with Heavy Flamer

Mortifactors Terminator with Heavy Flamer

Getting toasty over here as my heavy flamer-wielding Mortifactors Terminator has just marched off the assembly line. Another week done and another Termi is done – just two more to go now!

Each time I finish one of these bad boys, I’m reminded just how good Forge World are. This is some of the most simple painting I’ve done in ages on the Mortifactors project, and yet they look so good. My photos don’t do them credit (sexy ones to follow when the squad is complete) and yet they still look great (if I do say so myself). My ‘techniques’ are pretty du jour now, and relatively simple to do, but the model beneath is such a great sculpt that I don’t have to do much to make them look great, and that’s awesome sauce. I like to think I try though. 😉

forge world heavy flamer

On the heavy flamer itself, it’s a gosh darn sexy bit of kit. Of course, being Forge World, there was a bit of difficulty putting it together, which you wouldn’t think was possible given that it’s only two pieces, and yet they managed to accomplish it with a wrist guard that was a bit short and needed some green stuff to get it on there. It’s painted very simply, but I’m really happy with my brass-effect on that barrel. The main colour is a blend of Auric’s Armour Gold and a touch of Leadbelcher, and then Auric’s Armour Gold to highlight. Simple as you like, but I’m pretty happy with it.

Here are a couple of other shots for you to enjoy. All undercoated black, Citadel Paints used throughout, and painted using a W&N Series 7 Finest Sable 000 brush. Onwards!

Tartaros Pattern Mortifactors Terminator

Tartaros Pattern Mortifactors Terminator

Another one done. The second of my Mortifactors Terminators has clomped and stomped its way off my work bench and is now reporting for duty. This guy comes armed with a storm bolter and a chainfist, so I look forward to him carving his way through some heavy armour in the near future. The chainfists that come with the kit are very clever and look excellent – they just slot on to the underside of the power fists and though I’m only intending to use two in this squad, I was very tempted to use all four that came with the kit.

tartaros terminator chain fist

In terms of painting, it’s very much as per usual with the Mortifactors colours. I would say that not only am I really impressed with the look of the storm bolters in terms of the sculpt, but I’m really happy with the job that I’m doing on the painting. It’s simple to the extent that it’s not worth calling it a technique, but I’m just really enjoying the look of it.

This chappy was undercoated black and was painted using Citadel Paints and a W&N Finest Sable Series 7 000 brush. Stay tuned for more Terminators to come – knocking out one a week! And here are a couple more pictures for you to enjoy. Onwards!

Optimism and Grimdark – 7th is nearly upon us…

dos equis 40k 7th

Unless you’ve been living under a rock with limited internet access and a general disinterest in the news filtering out of the Nottingham’s premier Dark Citadel, you’ll have seen that we are a couple of weeks away from 7th Edition Warhammer 40,000. This of course has huge ramifications for all us denizens of the hobby-warp and from what I’m hearing, I’m really rather looking forward to it all.

There have been a bunch of rumours coming out as well as some things being confirmed by none other than the Grand Master Jervis ‘The Lion El’ Johnson himself, and here, I’m going to go through them in my trademark smiley, happy way because, honestly, there’s nothing I don’t like about what I’m hearing. Oh, and as a side note, there are no new rumours here – just my take on what we already know, or think we know.

It’s All In The Mind (phase)

one does not simply 40k

A lot of rumours seem to be about the dedicated psychic phase (which has been pretty much confirmed I believe) and I’m very much in favour of this. Being only a casual player, I was forever forgetting to use my psykers, or forgetting how much warp charge I had or had left. A dedicated phase helps to lodge it into my brain and I’m far more likely to take full advantage of it now. So that’s a big win for the likes of me.

Pooling warp charge and deny the witch dice makes sense to me too. We often hear of psykers working together in the fluff, so it’s a nice touch that they can now do the same on the tabletop. If some ghastly psychic threat is about to ruin a plan or kill a warlord, it makes sense that some or all of the psykers would move to stop it from happening and the new rules supposedly allow for this.

As for the stuff about everyone being able to summon daemons, I like this too (though it does smack of GW trying to shift expensive stock so I can certainly understand the warranted cynicism) – can new, plastic Greater Daemons be far behind? In fairness, the models desperately need updating so that would be no bad thing either. I can see desperate psykers turning to the darkness in their bleakest hour, and it opens up the idea of more armies blending with Chaos in their themes. Nurgly Orks? Khorne-corrupted Necrons? I’m guessing Grey Knights might have some restrictions/counter-boons, and the Tau’s well documented non-psychic status might need to be accounted for, but this looks fun.

Force Disorganised Chart Organised

bad luck brian 40k

Ok, so it was getting a bit unruly. Between allies, data slates, formations and fortifications it was all getting a little much for the casual player to really get to grips with and the serious mob were getting headaches from working out the optimum lists too. Now though, there seem to be much more defined rules on the way. Taking the standard chart armies means you can go for objectives and get extra buffs, but if you just want to try something different, for fun, fluff or perhaps tactics, you can now do that too.

One problem will be people abusing it. No one wants to face an army that is just Heldrakes. Or Riptides. Or Wave Serpents. But we should be good enough at enforcing good sportsmanship now to collectively not allow this in the majority of cases. Then again, for fluff, this is brilliant. Imagine playing a campaign and being able to add these conditions to one army. For an example, take a Space Marine force taking on a Tyranid invasion. The first game could be just scouts and landspeeders taking on lictors and deathleapers. Then each game afterwards could focus on the Space Marines attacking each set of falling spores, some containing only big bugs, while others hold only swarms. You could define your total Space Marine force and assign them to each battle before hand as well. The possibilities make this very exciting.

Add to this the new allies matrix (could Blood Angels and Necrons be getting a divorce?!) and I think we’ll see some fun new games and combos. It really feels like GW have managed to combine making more money (they are a business after all) and listening to the fans as well. As a CSM player who’s always hearing about Nightlords fans wanting to use the Blood Angels Dex to have a purely jump army, and their ilk, this should be a real win.

It’s On The Cards

buzz and woody 40k

I haven’t seen a good objective card in years (must dig out my old Dark Millennium box), so I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s in store here and seeing how they fit in with the game play. The six standards missions (which are retained) are good, but they were getting a little samey, but then again they’re now ‘kinda’ classics, and we get six new missions too, using these objective cards. This will allow players to take on completely new challenges, and that can only be a good thing. These are going to be called ‘Maelstrom of War’ missions and that just sounds so awesome.

Red And Green To Be Seen

winning kid 40k

A new box set is always a little exciting, even if you don’t collect the armies included. Rumour has it that it could be a smaller box than usual (presumably to make painting and gaming more accessible to newbs, which is nice) but that it will feature Blood Angels and Orks. This means firstly that we can pretty much say for sure that their codices are almost upon us (orks next, I believe), and secondly that I’ll be transported back to my early years in the hobby. From the front cover of 2nd Ed to one of the first Battle Reports I read in White Dwarf, this was always the fight I relished the most. It was the match up that got me hooked on the hobby, so it’ll be great to see it coming back.

What Else?! What Else!?

There are plenty more rumours out there and lots to be looking out for I’m sure, with not only belloflostsouls.net but also the GW official blog and White Dwarf giving us snippets and tidbits on an almost daily basis. I’ve not seen anything that makes me shudder just yet, and even the fact that three years haven’t passed since 6th isn’t that annoying. Ok, so I’d just got really comfortable with 6th, but we’ve had so much info, and things were getting a little unwieldy, so I think the time is about right.

There will be issues. The vocal (hopefully) minority will throw its toys out of the pram about something, but all in all, I’m optimistic and looking forward to 7th landing in just a couple of weeks. Doesn’t stop me thinking like this though…

Mortifactors Terminator

Mortifactors Terminator in Tartaros Pattern Armour

I’m back working on the Mortifactors and I have returned with the first of my Mortifactors terminators. Now, I couldn’t just do normal Termies, could I? Well, I could if I was a bit more sensible, but instead, I’ve gone for the Tartaros Pattern fellas from Forge World.

Now, the Tartaros kit is a typical Forge World kit and, for those who don’t know quite what that means, it means that it looks stunning, but it’s a right ∞#&$€% to put together. As well as the scrubbing with a toothbrush of tiny, fiddly pieces, and the clipping off of those great blocks of resin, it’s a right instructionless headache to get the assembly right. I had these guys sat on my desk for a month before I built up the courage to actually put them together, but looking at this first chap, I’m very glad that I did.

Terminator with power fist and storm bolter

Now, these pictures are not the finest. I’ll take some sexier, higher def ones when I’ve got the whole squad painted, but they should give you an idea of it all at least. It was really fun to jump back into the Mortifactors again and these beautiful models made it even more fun. And whereas usually I paint each individual bit, other than the heads, all of the terminators were put together before painting which made them far less intimidating to paint. I won’t go too much into the painting stuff as you’ve probably all got a bit tired of that over the last few months (like the bone, the black bits are a pain, blah, blah) but needless to say, I’m rather happy.

On the kit, those storm bolters are about the best looking guns I’ve seen on a mini, and the fact that each of the five terminators looks like a miniature Contemptor, that just makes them look even better. Great kit.

Here are a few more shots. Keep your eyes peeled around here for the next five to appear. This guy was undercoated black, and painted using Citadel Paints and a W&N Finest Sable Series 7 000 brush. Onwards!

Relic Navigator (and a sneak peek)

Relic Navigator

Relic Navigator

It was a relatively quiet weekend hobbywise, but I have finally managed to get another Relic piece completed. The Navigator is among the more simple busts included in the box, and I’ve tried to keep the colours in that theme to carry on the functional role that this guy plays aboard warp-capable ships.

He’s very grey. I remember reading in one of the Black Library novels (though I can’t remember which one) about how Navigators age unnaturally quickly because of the stress their warpsight puts on them. Therefore, I used bone shades for the skin and kept the uniform grey with a few embellishments that denote his importance. I’m pretty happy with this guy and he also marks half of the busts finished. Here are a couple more shots for you.

Oh, and here’s that sneak peek that I mentioned in the title. Here’s a part of the next addition to the Mortifactors project. But what could they be? Stay tuned to see…

Daemons of Nurgle – Nurglings

Nurglings

Nurgling Bases

Following my recent admission that Nurglings are my favourite 40k unit due to their disgusting playfulness, gleeful grossness and tactical usefulness, I’ve actually finished a unit all of my own. They’re not my best work, but they’re gribbly, slimy and they fit in perfectly with my existing Nurgle Daemons.

They were surprisingly time-consuming to paint. They’d probably have been easier if I’d painted them all the same but I wanted each to be a colourful pile of disgustingness, with the light green ones linking all the bases together. There’s lots of slime and distended pink organs and really not that much more to talk about – except that I can’t wait to one day witness them tying up some elite units and jigging their way across the ground.

Here’s another shot of them for you to enjoy (and for me to pad out this post). All painted using citadel paints and a W&N Series 7 000 brush. Onwards!

My favourite unit ever – Nurglings

old metal nurglings

A question was posed to me recently – ‘what’s your favourite unit ever in the game?’ and I answered instantly, without any hesitation or delay; ‘Nurglings’. Always Nurglings. From their look to their fluff to how they operate on the battlefield, these little monsters are at the top of the tree for me and as I rather fancy updating this blog today, I shall now tell you why.

Fluffy and Slimy

We operate, as participants in the narrative of the 41st Millennium, in a universe that is decidedly ‘Grimdark’. From the sinister ranks of the Inquisition to the military might of the Space Marines and Astra Militarum. From the Green menace ravaging world after world to the slow, drawn out death of the Eldar. From plotting heretics to the denizens of Commorragh who delight in pain, it can all get a bit much, even when it’s also a bit awesome. Daemons too are, in general terrifying, including many of Nurgle’s scions, but there are one or two children of the Lord of Decay that make life a little happier. The grandfatherly figure of the Great Unclean One, though disgusting, still smiles a friendly smile, and the Beasts bound around boisterously like big, slobbery, slime-covered dogs. For me though, Nurglings are the real charmers of the far far future.

Born in rather revolting circumstances – either bursting from boils or guts – they have a clownish outlook on life. They adore their hosts as children do their grandfathers, and prefer an existence filled with gambolling, giggling and silliness in Nurgle’s garden. The fluff says that they’re usually only prompted into attack when something threatens the ones they love, and I like that. It givers these little rotters a strange sort of nobility that not many other units in the game possess. They are prat-falling, protective pests, and that’s just great.

Indeed, in a galaxy where so many are quick to the fight, it’s refreshing to have these loyal, grinning little gits around. They add some comic relief and also a viable tactical option (but more on that later) to any daemonic incursion.

nurglings box

Gribble, Slobber and Puke

I imagine the above words would be the names of Nurglings, based on the way they look. They’ve gone through an interesting evolution in terms of the minis that GW has produced over the years. Though once they were an eclectic collection of lead/white metal shapes with tiny distended guts and ghoulish faces (see the image at the top of this post), when they were released in plastic, they changed for the better. Initially, I wasn’t a fan, but, like the Nurgling itself, festering in the belly of a Great Unclean One, they have grown on me. They are impish, silly and almost cute, and yet they are still disgusting, bloated, bilious and covered in boils – true children of Grandfather Nurgle.

It’s a testament to GW’s sculptors and designers that they’ve taken what was very much an old style of swarm and turned it into a taller model with real presence and the feeling that they’re scrambling over each other to get to their enemy. Kudos to the team for those changes.

gw nurglings

Down and Dirty

What with all the silliness and gribbliness, it’s sometimes easy to forget that these fellas are actually exceptionally useful from a tactical perspective. Ok, so they’re a daemon with a daemon’s Invun save, and a relatively low toughness value, especially for a follower of Nurgle. However, they have loads of wounds and lots of attacks too which, though they’ll struggle to bring down particularly tough opposition, the sheer weight of attacks can make them a real nightmare for your opponents.

These guys pretty much own the ‘tar pit’ tactic and in units of six, they can tie up an elite opposition unit for a turn or two at least. It may not sound like much, but a player hoping that their Banshees or TH/SS Termies can take out something big and important will get incredibly frustrated trying to wade through a mess of Nurglings. And the wee daemons’ ability to deep strike into the field means you can get them up close to your opposition’s key units and weather plenty of damage while they’re waiting to charge in.

These little guys won’t win you games on their own, but they’ll help your bigger, scarier units to do just that. They’re cheap as chips too, costing not much more than some pieces of wargear in other codices. From a tactical standpoint, if you’re planning on taking a mono-Nurgle list or a blended list, you want a blob of these guys in your ranks. Yes, there are more impressive units out there and in a completely ‘optimised’ list you probably won’t see them, but they’ll be heaps of fun and, if used correctly, they can be proper game-changers too.

nurgling and blight drone

In Conclusion…

Nurglings make me smile. While the nightmare of the grim, dark, grimdark future happens all around them, they smile and cheerfully get on with trying to eviscerate things much larger than they are. I’m painting up a batch now and, though they’re taking a little longer than I thought they would, watch this space – they’ll be here soon. Oh, but above is one of my lil’ ones, recently hatched from a nightmarish blight drone. Charming.
