WIP – Good Knight, and Good Luck

knight legs torso

So, as vaguely promised last week, here is another WIP (or with this being Slaanesh, should that be ‘WHIP’?) of the monstrous, eye-hurting behemoth that is Dios Toros, the much-corrupted Imperial Knight. And this week, I think I almost ‘jumped the shark’ with just the smallest illustration.

There is a point on a pair of axis for any painter which is where ambition meets ability. It’s important to push this point as that’s how you improve, but it can make for brown trousers time when you’re working on a project like this and you think you’ve gone past it. I’ve put a lot of expectation on myself and with the incredible reception that the Knight’s legs got last week (this blog had its biggest day ever) I can feel the eyes of my peers fixed on my efforts too (well, to some extent at least).

I’m pretty comfortable with freehand painting patterns or basic designs. It’s a nice little skill to have and I’m quietly proud of my ability. My skills with freehand painting too have improved greatly since the Mortifactors project began but seeing as that only really deals with skulls, my repertoire is a tad limited. But mimicking another artist is a real test and I have decided to test myself this week. That little point on those axis is getting pushed hard and I am in danger of snarling up the whole project.

mimicking blanche

In my head, it sounded relatively easy – painting a John Blanche Illustration or two on this model. Pfft! Do it with my eyes closed! …I have no idea why it sounded easy. No idea. Even as I write this, I have no idea what came over me to even dare to attempt it. And there were a couple of times while i was doing this that I almost scrapped the whole thing. I even consulted fellow hobbyist, oldest friend and 4gotowar proprietor Henry South about it and followed his advice (to some extent). I persevered and I’m relatively happy with the result. It fits with the project and my style and I think it suitably pays homage to Mr Blanche. There might be another illustration on the way soon – what a glutton for punishment I am.

knight internals

The big job of the last couple of days has been the internal workings of the knight and the inner torso is now done. Lots of weathering using the Citadel Technical paints but all hopefully done with some restraint. They’re such fun to use, it’s really hard to stop myself from going OTT with them, but I think I’ve managed it. As I said in the last post, I want to have internal corruption behind the gaudy plates of armour, symbolising the rotten core within the Emperor’s Children.

bare knight head

I’ve also done the head, but not much of this is going to be visible as a suitable faceplate is being put together as we speak. It should be as gaudy and terrifying as you’d hope. Nevertheless, this relatively simple job deserved showing before it gets covered forever.

dirge siren

I’ve replaced one of the stubbers with a dirge caster which will act as a Doom Siren for the purposes of this Knight. I’m really looking forward to coming up with some home-brew rules for Dios Toros too so that fits in well with him being a little different. And it wouldn’t be Slaanesh without a little bit of sound after all. In many adventures I can always field him as a Knight Paladin, but i’d like to give him his own flavour too for friendlier, fluffier games.

knight chest paint

There are a couple of more colourful plates already done and I’m quite happy with the scrollwork on the chest too. All in all then, it’s progressing at a nice speed but there are still two weapons/arms to do, as well as the large top-plate and shoulder plates so it’ll be a while before he’s ready to roll out onto the battlefield yet. And yes, those arms are going to be converted too. I really don’t make things easy for myself. That being said… Onwards!

Distractions and 40k are a Real Pa… ooh, new box set!

wd stormclaw

Was ‘claw’ the one thing left that they hadn’t added to ‘thunder’ or ‘storm’ yet?

Stormclaw, A new Space Wolves vs Orks box set is heading our way in the form of a limited edition delight full of exclusive sculpts (presumably) from GW. Rumour has it that we could be seeing a couple of these every year as GW looks to expand on existing fluff, forge new narratives and, naturally, make some more money.

It isn’t the point of this article, but I’ll briefly give my two cents on the rumoured new box set schedule here – I think it’s a good idea. GW are always going to be looking for ways to make more money – they are a business after all – and I have no issue with them doing it in this manner. What’s more, if it helps to enrich and enliven the setting, and gets new people into the hobby by providing an easy access box, then that’s great. More power to them.

The point of today’s diatribe, this most unranting of rant-ettes, is that it’s another distraction for me and I have enough of those already. I’ll admit right now that I have shiny-thing magpie syndrome when it comes to the hobby, and I wonder if a lot of other people suffer from the same issue.

magpie

Depending on your point of view (and it isn’t really mine) there are a lot of reasons to be annoyed with GW. Money is pretty much the cause of most of them and though I concede that this isn’t the cheapest of hobbies, it doesn’t bug me as much as it seems to many others. I budget, I don’t go overboard (well, usually I don’t) and I’ve never seen someone win purely because they could afford to spend more on their army than their opponent. Just my personal experience I’m going off there, but I think the points system, sportsmanship and a few other factors balance things out (no, I’m not talking about that balance – I’m not going near that debate, at least not today) in my meta at least.

distraction

However, I digress. My issue, is that I want it all. Games Workshop don’t really do marketing. They don’t have press ads, billboards, online campaigns… any of that sort of thing. What they do have though are lovely pictures and the knowledge that, either through visiting their website, popping into a store or flicking through White Dwarf, suckers like me are going to be dribbling over the newest toy soldiers.

Now, I have my set factions, even if I have a few of them. Eldar, Grey Knights, Space Marines and Chaos (Slaanesh or Nurgle) and I don’t really stray from these paths. That doesn’t stop me from staring at things like the recently released Flash Gits and really wanting to buy a set and paint them.

flash gitz

And why shouldn’t I do just that? I’ve heard nothing but good things about that kit – lots of options, plenty of fun things and a few funny things too (exactly right for orks). The problem is though, where do I fit it in? My Mortifactors project is still going, though I’ve not worked on those for a while now what with moving house, commission work and the start of my Knight project. Oh yeah, the Knight which has been rekindling my allegiance to Slaanesh over the last couple of days and has me thinking about working on those guys again – a small unbound warband of daemons and marines, perhaps?

When does it end?! Well, in my experience, it doesn’t. I think I’ve noted in one of these articles before that staff members in my local FLGS have stated that they have been suffering from “release fatigue” this year – every month there are amazing new monsters, massed ranks and masters to drool over, and I’m in the same boat. I can’t help myself.

don't always buy

This all sounds like a bit of a Toble-moan (it’s like biting into a delicious bar of Toblerone chocolate and whining that the tasty triangly points hurt the roof of your mouth). I get my pick of great stuff, I’m in a comfortable enough place financially that I’m not prohibited from investing in my armies, and yet, I’m now having a whinge about the amount of choice I have. The nerve!

Well, that’s not what I’m doing. I’ve also stated before that I believe we’re living in a golden age of sculpts. Games Workshop, admittedly driven in part by the quality work from the other smaller fish in the pond, are making great things happen. When/If Forge World release a Gargant, we’ll pretty much be playing with all the minis that 15 years ago, people wouldn’t have imagined could exist outside of epic scale (enormous titans not withstanding). That is cool (for a given value of the term of course) and I love it.

This is about me (what ego!) and my own inability to stop my eyes from wandering onto factions that I have no business thinking about. When I was a kid playing in 2nd Ed, I bought whatever I could afford every other week and I ended up with loads of models and barely an army to call my own. I never want to get back into that habit. It’s really important for me to keep an eye on my project goals. I have my Mortifactors to finish, some Nurgle Daemons to paint up, and a Slaaneshi Warhost to put together. That’s me for the year. And you can hold me to that.

my pledge

That’s what this post was about! I knew it had a point. Yes, my declaration to you, my occasional but delightful readers is this; I shall be working solely on those projects for the rest of the year (oh, and one last bit of Orky commission). So expect more Mortifactors, more gribbly Nurgle Daemons and a few Psycho-delic Emperor’s Children before 2014 expires. And though I’ll almost certainly buy the Limited Edition box set, it will be more for investment purposes than for the hobby. But who knows what 2015 will bring…?

WIP – Very Un-Imperial Knight

knight wip

I don’t often post WIPs on this blog (I don’t know why…), but I feel the need to with my latest project. Despite having a bit of a commission left to do, as well as the Mortifactors project and more still awaiting the attention of my brushes, I have taken it upon myself to work on a very Un-Imperial Knight. I finally succumbed to my wants and picked up the frankly huge Imperial Knight kit, and it’s already proving fun, but exhausting as I sacrilegiously corrupt it in the name of She Who Thirsts, The Prince of Pleasure, Slaanesh.

As you can see from the above image, the only part done so far are the legs, and this post is a bit of a ‘story so far’ (as most WIP posts are), so, excusing the relatively poor iPhone camera shots, let’s take a closer look.

knight crotch

These are the first shots of Dios Toros (a very ‘low gothic’ way of saying ‘Bull God’), my Slaaneshi Knight, and what a monster he is (or will be, unless you count a pair of legs as a monster). I’m still very much in early days, but I’m hoping to get the lower section finished this week and crack on with the very bulky torso too.

animal print slaanesh

Very much inspired by the old Eavy Metal ‘Psycho-delic’ vision of how far the Emperor’s Children have sunk from their once regal, beautiful history, regular readers might note the similarity to one of my older pieces – my Sonic Dreadnought. This is just on a “slightly” larger scale. The early Chaos Renegades and 1st Gen Noise Marines are where my image of Slaanesh and particularly the Emperor’s Children stem from. They should give you a headache just by looking at them. They should be so far from the regimented order and functional tones of the loyalist marines that one look at them would make the Emperor spin on his Golden Throne. Hence all the loopy colours above which are very ‘Marmite’ (for those who don’t know the term, it means you’ll either love it or hate it – very Slaanesh).

I started off by building and painting up the metal skeleton of the legs. They’re weathered and rusted just a touch, to indicate the internal rot of the Emperor’s Children that is hidden behind their garish and vibrant exteriors. Once that was done, I set about painting up the plates. There has to be a lot of pink to keep it tied together, but I also wanted to use animal prints, as if these are the skins (or homages to the skins) of great and exotic animals that have been hunted for sport on the worlds that have been plagued by Fulgrim’s sons.

spiky knees

There are also chips and breaks in the rims of these plates (and plenty of my now apparently ‘signature’ ‘moody’ gold), and there have to be plenty of spikes. Using liquid green stuff, a brush and a knife, I’ve added the traditional spikes that denote Choas-ness throughout the 41st Millennium to the plates. I’ve also had fun inverting the plates, and changing the existing spikes from noble fleur-de-lis-esque examples to more heretical spear-points.

rusted barrel base

I’ve kept the base relatively simple so as not to draw the eye away from the model (the giant, neon, scary model) above it, but have added a rusting barrel and a little more detail to keep it at least a little interesting. Likewise, the skeleton of the model will be relatively understated too, to keep the view fixed on those gaudy plates and patterns.

knight bum

Needless to say, this is a massive job, and with all this freehand work going on, it is going to take me a fair bit of time to complete it. I’m even going to attempt to replicate a bit of John Blanche’s work in this which will, if I can do it, be no mean feat! His Slaaneshi illustrations are incredible and I’d love to pay homage to him with a bit of an inclusion here. Anyway, I’ll probably put up at least one more of these WIPs (if not more) before the task is done. It needs more chains, more spikes, more freehand and more… well, just more. The weapons are going to be heavily converted, the head is being altered too and there’s plenty of other nonsense happening so watch this space for further updates. Rest assured though, this will be a big one.

Oh, and one last, quick update today. I will hopefully soon have access to a high-end digital camera so I’ll get some good shots of this completed model and I’ll do a reshoot of plenty of others as well. Onwards!

My troubled relationship with the Space Wolves

space wolves illustration

It looks like our next turn about the release merry-go-round from GW will be the big bounding beasts that are Fenris’ finest. Yep, it’s Space Wolves time. You probably won’t see much from me in the way of painting these guys and I want to use this post to explain why. In part, this is due to the BIG project I’m working on at the moment (more on that to follow soon) but also because, well, I don’t really like Space Wolves.

leman russ

Except that isn’t true. Of all the Primarchs, the grim-faced Wolf King, the Emperor’s Executioner, Leman Russ, striding purposefully into battle is, for me, up there among the coolest of the primogenitors. I love the hints of Vikingness in their fluff and all that ‘there are no wolves on Fenris’ mystery. From the destruction of Prospero to the rejection of the Codex Astartes, I am a fan of the Space Wolves stories, from the heresy era and beyond.

And models-wise, they’ve always had some crackers. It may be a dated pose now, but Ragnar Blackmane’s mini has a little bit of the ‘iconic’ as far as I’m concerned. It may be of that old style but I still think it has an aura of ‘come and try me’ about it. Bjorn too – the first named dreadnought I ever came across always looked like a real mean monster.

ragnar blackmane

However, all of this admiration aside, I’m not a fan of the Space Wolves. I’m not writing this to slag off a faction – I don’t do that. To each, their own. The thing is, I feel like I should be really into the Fenrisians, and yet, I’m not. This is me trying to understand why. I mean, I even look a bit like a Space Wolf – I should have at least a 2000pt army just going by my beard! I’ve narrowed it down, I think, to these gripes/opinions…

Fluffier than a Pampered Pomeranian

space wolf doge

It’s always a little odd when you start taking things that are very obviously of one place and start using them in another. Like the Vikings of the 41st Millennium. It’s like driving a horse and trap down the motorway/freeway. What I mean by that is that though they are related, they just sit a little too uncomfortably with each other. The necrons with their Robo-Space Pharaohs look suffer from the same problem for me, and to a lesser extent, the Minotaurs Chapter are a little στη μύτη.

As I mentioned earlier, I like the nordic edge, don’t get me wrong, but all the sagas, runes, axes… if this was a a few years ago, I’d actually be surprised if they didn’t get a long-boat shaped/themed transport, though I have heard tell of a dragon-shaped flyer already for the upcoming release. Yes, I know Chaos already have one of these, but that makes ‘sense’ in that it’s a dragon created from a demonically possessed vehicle rather than an actual dragon… actually, that’s about as bad so I’ll leave that one. All I’m saying is that the occasional rune works better for me than the entire horn-helmeted opera that these guys seem to have become.

The Heritage of the Poodle

This is going back a long way, but when I was playing back in 2nd Ed, I remember a guy in the Reading store referring to them as ’Space Poodles’ shortly after their first codex was released and, well, that kind of stuck. Not a logical reason to dislike them at all, but it goes to show you the power of early impressions on a young mind. Since then, I have always had that phrase stuck in my head whenever I see their name. And some of those hairstyles they sport are a little less ‘wild warrior’ and a little more ‘Parisian salon’.

Baby Blue Beagles or Grey Great Danes

space wolf progenoid glands?

Space Wolf progenoid glands?

Whether you prefer the older grey style of Space Wolves or the more baby blue look that they seem to have developed over the years, I can honestly say that I’m not a fan of either. The Dark Greens and Blacks of the Dark Angels – nice. The vibrant sanguine red of the Blood Angels – awesome. The shining silver of the Grey Knights – stunning. The Battle Ship Grey/Duck Egg look of the wolves – it’s just never been my scene. For purely aesthetic reasons, that colour-scheme counts against them in a big way for me and that really is a big reason why I won’t be rushing to paint them.

Let’s Address the Wolf In The Room

moon moon

Yeah… no. The whole ‘riding around on giant wolves’ thing just does not do it for me. It may be fluffy (to an extent) but it does have an air of ridiculousness about it. It’s fair to say that most armies have something a little ridiculous, but the big doggies take the proverbial biscuit in my eyes and if I had my way, they’d go the same way as the Ork Boar Boyz.

I think that that’s probably enough. Space Wolves will never be a faction that appeals to me other than enjoying the occasional bit of fluff. That being said, there are a couple of caveats to all of this. Firstly, I want them to get a good Codex with lots of fun toys – it’s always good to see a different army on the tabletop and I’ve not faced any Wolves in a long time. I should also say, regarding the colour scheme, there are some people out there who have totally nailed it and, had I their talent or any measure of it, I’d be tempted. Artists Delius and ThirdEyeNuke have both done excellent Space Wolves projects – well worth checking out – as have many others.

So, I hope I’m ending on a positive there. You won’t see much in the way of Space Wolves here, but you’re in for a pack of them heading your way in the coming weeks from GW. Let’s hope it’s a good release with some cool new models. Until the next saga…

Friday Fun – How to choose a 40k army

which 40k army should I play?

Which 40k army should I play?

Ever have something get a little out of hand? A couple of weeks ago at work, I downloaded a new tool to help me create flow charts and ‘Mind Maps’ (so much fun, right?) and when I was playing around with it, one of my first tests was ‘should I play sci-fi or fantasy?’ and I put a couple of questions in there. I saved it, confident that I now knew how this thing worked and got on with my work.

Before going on, a quick review of the product. It’s called Mindnode and it’s available on the app store for mac. I think it’s free too but not sure. This isn’t a solicited/paid for review or anything (if I was paying for this, I’d be pretty annoyed), I just thought I’d say that it’s fun and easy to use and looks quite nice. Now, back to the main the crux of this post…

So, getting in early quite a lot over the last couple of weeks, I’ve found a little time to actually do things other than work at my desk for 20 minutes a day (oh, the luxury!!). And I’ve been working on this now finished piece which is more ‘What 40k Army Should I Be Playing?’ than ’40k or Fantasy?’. So I thought I would put it up here as a little friday fun for us. Best to click through and see the image in all its glory – it’s a bit big. Still, if you’ve ever wondered what you should be working on in terms of your ideal army, this might* help.

And just a note to remind the more vitriolic readers out there, this is JUST FOR FUN and a bit SILLY. It sucks that I feel I have to say that due to a minority of morons in this hobby but God forbid anyone has a laugh while vying for the fate of the galaxy in the far future, right?

Incoming Real Life Update

Oh, yes. I’m moving house over the weekend. While you have no real reason to care about this, it does mean that at least the articles about my painting are probably going to dry up a bit over the next couple of weeks. Normal service shall be resumed when I’m all settled in. Onwards!

Ork Meganobz Squad

Squad of Ork Meganobz

Squad of Nobz in Mega Armour

As promised, here are some slightly nicer shots of these monstrosities. They’ve been handed back to their owner after their makeover and I’m happy to say that he was delighted. I managed to get a handful of slightly nicer looking shots before I packaged them up and sent them on their merry way, and so I’m sharing them with you now.

big nobz

The things I’ve really enjoyed about this mini project include learning how to paint Ork skin again, the sheer amount of rust I’ve been able to add and the checks. Those checkered patterns were loads of fun to do and I’m happy with the results – especially the black/red check.

big orks

A successful project and I’m very proud of my first commission. I shall miss seeing these chaps on my painting table as I have done for the last couple of weeks. I’ll get back to Orks soon enough though, as I’ve got to Boss-up a couple of them too. Keep your eyes very much on this blog for a couple of future Orky Updates.

All painted using Citadel Paints, undercoated Grey (White from top/Black from below) and painted with a variety of brushes including Citadel and W&N. On to the next project. WAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Ork Meganob with rocket base

Ork Meganob

The third Ork Meganob of this commission is done, and he was a barrel of fun to work on too, though it had a few frustrating moments, and I did the best rescue job I could with that crashed rokkit…

Let this serve as a warning to anyone buying models second hand, or just as a general modelling lesson really. Some people have great ideas, but no skill in executing them. I include myself in that, but when I’m trying to learn any painting or modelling tricks, I don’t start out on the showcase miniature. Begin with a grunt if you have to use a miniature at all – something from the bits box means you can get it wrong and it doesn’t matter. This would have been sage advice to give to the guy that my buddy (for whom these orks are for) bought these from, but alas apparently no sages were there to give it. The rokkit in the base is a nice idea, but it not only cost a combi launcha on another ork but it was literally just stuck in there. I’ve done what I can for it by adding a small plume of smoke, building up a slight crater around it (hard to see in these images) and making it look like it had at least the hint of an exhaust but it’s the sort of thing that has the potential to ruin an entire model. I like to think I’ve rescued it though so we’ll leave that mini rant/advice snippet for now and look at some more shiny pictures.

space ork shoota

I flipped the colours around on this guy – no two orks should ever have armour that looks the same – and it was interesting seeing a black shoota and a red klaw as opposed to visa versa. This Goff-ish colour-scheme is really fun to play around with and mix up across the models what with all the chequered patterns and the like, and I’m glad I tried this switch around.

space ork klaw

Other than all of that, it’s as you were really. A rusty klaw that I’m very happy with, a couple of nice glyphs and a lighter skin shade for this ork too. Actually, I’ve been ecstatic with the skins I’ve managed to do and it’s so fun to paint that there have actually been a couple of times when I’ve almost thought ‘yeah, I could do an Ork army…’ and then the Emperor’s ghost bitchslaps me and I remember that not every boy is as fun to paint as these guys. Still, there’s a relatively simple formula that I could share on here at some point – it’s pretty fun and I at least like the results.

ork machinery

So, I’m going to call this squad done. I’m still going to be doing a couple more of these but they will take a bit more time and this is sort of the official ‘squad’ of three. That means there’ll be some glamour shots of the whole squad going up over the next couple of days, so keep an eye out. I’ve really been enjoying these orks and I’m really happy that I’ve taken to them so quickly. Not perfect by any stretch, but for someone who hasn’t painted one in 20 years, they ain’t half bad. And now, the obligatory “WAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!”

On the Heraldry of the Mortifactors Chapter

Submitted as part of Inquisitor Shonto’s annals entitled ‘Concerning Chapter-Specific Idiosyncrasies With Relation To Preventative Actions Towards The Possibility Of Heresy’. It should be noted that despite the chapter’s overt distinctions and curious differences, there is not now, nor has there ever been any evidence to suggest anything but the utmost loyalty to the Emperor, may he watch over us. The complete report is now encrypted into the Inquisitorial Stacks on Terra (ref 0.9001232.88d) but this brief summery may give you some idea as to this most unusual of Space Marine chapters.

[excerpt]

The Importance of the Skull

The skull is by far the most important aspect of the heraldry and Chapter insignia of the Mortifactors. They venerate death and the dead above all, though they save their greatest veneration for the Emperor himself. Their halls are filled with morbid imagery and statues of those now past. Furthermore, the very walkways of their Star Fortress, the Basilica Mortis, are catacombs for long interred heroes, both of the legion and, in some instances, mere mortal humans.

As the leering face of mortality, the skull features on nearly every set of shoulder guards worn by the battle brothers of the Mortifactors. Each Space Marine must paint the skull on his left shoulder himself (or on the right should he wear the Crux Terminatus), adhering to myriad rules, before the eve of battle or a new campaign. It would be impossible to catalogue all of these intricacies, but I have made some observations during the Nemenar Campaign where the Mortifactors drove a large Ork Warband from the system on the Imperium’s southern limits. What information on this strange custom that I have gathered, I submit to you here.

Tactical Marines

Typically, the shoulder guards of the tactical marine display a simple skull aspect on sable. The size denotes length of service to the chapter, with larger skulls, some obscuring all of the background worn by those worthy of Veteran status. Smaller skulls are worn by those who have only just graduated from the 10th Company.

-=-

Devastator Marines

Similar to Tactical Marines, though the addition of fire or flames denotes additional training with heavy weaponry.

-=-

Assault Marines

Similar to Tactical Marines, though the skull is matched in some way with a small silver blade to show additional training with close combat weaponry.

-=-

Chaplains

Though this rank is revered perhaps more than any other in the Chapter, the skull is never large and does not obscure the shoulder guard. This is supposed to denote the link between the Chaplain and even the newest recruit into the chapter. Instead though, the colours of the shoulder guard are inverted, with a sable skull aspect on a field of bone.

-=-

Librarians

The skull obscures the shoulder guard, though the field is azure with the skull in lighter shades of the same colour. The rest of the armour remains predominantly black but depending on the company the Librarian is attached to, there may be other azure decoration.

-=-

Techmarines

The skull obscures the shoulder guard, though the field is crimson with the skull in lighter shades of the same colour. There will be other red embellishments across the armour too, though all of it is of a softer hue, more closely resembling the soil of Mars and its rusty appearance.

-=-

Apothecaries

The skull of the Apothecary is hooded, and more in shadow. This symbolises the closeness with death and incorporates part of the ancient Terran superstition of the Dyer Reaper who comes at the hour of passing. Other embellishments on the armour include a marbled white where other marines would have bone. It should also be noticed that Apothecaries are rarely used in combat. They are seen as a necessity, but only begrudgingly as they deprive their brothers of death, so are rarely seen on the battlefield (as is the same with Dreadnoughts – the Mortifactors only maintain two or three and are strangely superstitious about them).

-=-

Scouts

The Scouts are not permitted to wear the skull as this is considered to be an honour that is earned when they become a full Space Marine. Instead, their shoulder guards are plain bone. Upon passing all rites of initiation, and on the eve of their first battle as a full Space Marine, they will paint the skull for the first time in a ceremony conducted by a Chaplain (or Superior Brother if no Chaplain is present).

-=-

First Company

The Veterans of the Chapter all wear skulls that obscure the entire shoulder guard with no additional adornments or variations as this was the guard worn by the Chapter’s founder, the most noble Sasebo Tezuka.

-=-

Veteran Sergeants (non First Company)

Once a Veteran leaves the First Company to take command of a squad, the skull is reduced in size again to the size of a new recruit, yet the gold border (indicative of First Company) is retained. He is also permitted to display his name on the guard.

-=-

Censure

Marines under censure are not permitted to display the skull upon their armour, and instead, until their penance has been paid in full, display a bone coloured ‘M’. There are alternative marks across the Chapter for this though they remain undisclosed. Furthermore, a Space Marine who performs a valorous act of note while under censure may choose to retain the ‘M’ mark beyond the period of punishment.

Captains & Chapter Master

There do not appear to be any rules surrounding the shoulder guards of these heroes of the Chapter. Instead, their traditions, personal experience, weaponry and more define their customs and each varies greatly.

Lettering

Some shoulder guards bear almost indistinct gold lettering. These are the personal expressions of the individual marines and may relate to anything, from campaigns fought to the names of fallen brothers or even personal mottos.

Ork Meganob with Twin Linked Shoota and Power Klaw

Waaaaagggghhhhh!!! Another ork Meganob (still giggling at that) is done. Stomping into battle across the urban wasteland looking to smash all in its path, it also appears to have turned up with Night Fighting in force judging by the photos. Apologies about that – it was a late night shoot. Sexy shots will come when the whole squad is finished but really wanted to show him off today too.

twin linked shoota

I inverted the colour-scheme for this one a bit. Whereas the last one had a lot of red and a little black, this one has his armour the other way round. You can’t really tell from these pictures, but the skin is a bit lighter too. I want each ork in this squad of five to have a completely different skin tone, and this one started with a base of Warboss Green rather than Waaaagh Flesh and I’m happy with the look. I’m also a big fan of the black and red check look which I think I nailed (even if I say so myself) on the shoulder pad.

I won’t wax too lyrical on this. I’m really happy with how he came out and just wanted to share a few pics with you. Any constructive criticism is always welcome and if you’ve got anything you think I could be doing better, let me know why and how in the comments section. This model was undercoated in a mix of white from above and black from below, Citadel paints were used throughout and a mix of W&N (Series 7 finest Sable 000) and Citadel (Fine Detail) brushes were used throughout. Here are a couple more images for you. On to the next one!

10 Reasons To Really Enjoy Orks

old ork codex

Games Workshop has, as its current logo dictates, become Games wORKshop this month with the impending release of Codex Orks. We’ve had the Gorkanaut and Morkanaut, the Flash Gitz and more are on the way each week. Having painted my first Ork in a long time just last week, I thought I’d take this opportunity to share the 10 reasons why I have a soft spot for these ugly, green lugs. This is why I like the Orks…

1. Da Way Dey Tawk

ork glyphs

Da fing is, wivout der unike way of speakin, Orks wud jus be scary. Dis makes em almost luvabol in a big teefed, shooty, stompy, scary sort of way. Wen yu see dem, it is almost impossible not to speak like dis. WAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!  …right, that’s enough of that.

2. Their Punk Heritage

goff rockers

When GW started out in Hammersmith way back when, they were in a hub of punky activity. With the legendary Odeon (now Apollo) just down the road, and with early 80s London dominated by Punk and the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal – think Maiden and Priest, etc), it isn’t surprising that this ended up in GW’s products. It actually gave them a great opportunity to bring a Tolkien-based fantasy species into the future. The colourful, ‘homemade’ look of Orks really plays up to that punky thing, and the Goff Rockers are still available to this day. I’m genuinely surprised there aren’t Ork characters called Jonny Rotter and Jozz Trummer.

3. The Comedy Value

ork humour

Both of the above facts lend themselves to the Space Orks’ status as 40k’s Funniest Faction. Nurgle may be charming and funny to an extent, but Orks can be downright hilarious. From Grots to Bommers, from Squigs to Weirdboyz, they know how to have a laugh and still be ferocious at the same time.

4. Grots

grots

Well, if you’re going to bring Orcs over from Fantasy, you couldn’t very well leave out Goblins could you? They made the jump in the days of Space Elves, Space Dwarves and Space Rats (the latter two long since devoured by Hive Fleets), and I’m really glad the Space Goblins hung around. They are the top of the bill when it comes to entertainment value and whether you call them Grots, Gretchin or Space Goblins, it’s almost impossible not to love them.

5. The Yarrick / Ghazghkull Grudge / Love Story

Ghazghkull vs Yarrick

Big Mag Uruk and Sebby Y are in possession of one of the greatest beefs in all of 40k law. An Orkish-talking Commissar and the most brutally cunning (and cunningly brutal) of all Ork Warbosses have been doing a deadly dance since the 2nd War for Armageddon. From Hades Hive to Golgotha and back again, these two have been trading blows for a long time. There was even a brief spell where Yarrick was Ghazgkull’s prisoner, though was released out of the great Greenskin’s respect for his abilities. Their fight continues…

6. The Shokk Attack Gun

shokk attack gun

This weapon has been around for decades now and instills as much fear in the user as it often does in the target (not to mention the grots that end up being swallowed up to thing to give it its ‘juice’). It always makes for an ‘exciting’ game when you see one of these facing you.

7. ‘Nobz’

Ork Meganob

I suppose it’s derived from ‘Nobles’ but never the less, the monicker assigned to the biggest, toughest orks still makes me giggle as if I were waiting for an Eastbound Piccadilly Line train (Londoners will know what I mean). And of course, Meganobz are even funnier.

8. The Octarius War

octarius war

On a distant world, a war rages that may go some way to deciding the fate of the galaxy in the 41st Millennium. Thanks to an Inquisitorial plot, an enormous war rages between Orks and Tyranids with no clear victor in sight. The Eldar and Imperium try to get involved every now and again, but this is an Ork vs Bug fight and whoever wins that will be a real force to be reckoned with.

9. Dakka and Dice

ork shooting dice

Every box of orks should come with a dice cube because if you’re going to war with Greenskins, you always need more dice. Lootas are best for this, and it’s always funny to watch them try to hit anything (until they have an unnaturally good roll and suddenly half your army is dead).

10. All of the Above

orks in disguise

They’re fun. Whether they’re blowing themselves up or ripping the arms off they’re enemies, they’re a laugh. I always notice that, as a rule, Ork players tend to take the dice rolls with a better spirit than many others. If you’re hitting on sixes all the time, you don’t expect much, and yet you can often still come out on top. Orks remind us that this hobby is about a game more than anything else, and that’s why I love ‘em. I may never build an army myself, but it’s always a laugh to play against them, even when you get dakka-ed to pieces. let’s hope the comedy value (and a couple of nice buffs) are included in the new Codex.
