Aikos Valedrix, Captian of the Mortifactors 1st Company – The Rules

As mentioned in my previous post, I’ve been toying around with some custom rules ideas for my new First Captain, he of the skull helm and big nasty axe, Aikos Valedrix. I’ve also fleshed out his background a bit too with a little history and personality. Anyway, it would be great to get your take on what’s below. I’m not claiming to be an expert on writing rules, but I think I’ve done ok. Here goes…

Aikos Valedrix, 1st Captain of the Mortifactors (220pts)

Aikos Valedrix counts as an HQ Choice in a Mortifactors Army list.

Background

Valedrix’s rise to the position of 1st Captain was meteoric, but he has proven himself in the centuries since his appointment as a terrifying warrior, always determined to prove his worth and zealously transfixed on raising the standing of his chapter.

Placed in the 2nd Company as a tactical marine within Squad Vax, he was part of the force became known as The Heroes of Drannar IV. Out of eighty Space Marines deployed to the Ork infested warzone of the Drannar system, only fifteen returned to the Basilica Mortis having held the citadel on the fourth planet for over three months before a huge Imperial force arrived to relieve them. As the 2nd Company was rebuilt, his valorous actions prompted his promotion to Sergeant despite having only fought in a handful of campaigns.

He soon proved himself in the furnace of war, and time and again he was to be found at the vanguard of most assaults. His original tactics and defiant attitude pushed him from campaign to campaign, often without stopping to replenish troops and supplies. On the Moon, Franeth, he took just 24 Space Marines into battle to support a beleaguered Astra Militarum force facing down a Necron awakening and inspired all the Imperial troops to a rousing victory as he himself destroyed the tomb core.

Inducted into the 1st Company after Franeth, he became a master of combat in Tactical Dreadnought Armour and was soon commanding his own squad as ferociously as he had done in the 2nd Company. He was elected Captain after the death of his predecessor, Garon Manix, who fell during the cleansing of the Space Hulk, Blessed Horror.

Since then, he has raised his company to mirror his own actions in war, pursuing the Imperium’s foes without hesitation or the thought of self preservation. He now wields Tezuka’s Axe, a monstrous weapon and the first to be forged from Posul bronze, along with the ancient combi-weapon, The Dragon of Calth. He strides into battle as a terrifying spectre, an incarnate of death and a single-minded warrior intent on destroying the Imperium’s enemies.

When the young Chapter first arrived at Posul, they saw nothing but a world shrouded in darkness. Many among the chapter counselled that they ought to move on and find a different world in the sector to make their home, but unbeknown to them, Sasebo Tezuka had had a vision of the world below and knew that it had worth. He took a Stormraven down to the planet’s surface alone, and after thirteen days he returned with this mighty weapon in hand. It was forged in Posul bronze and he spoke of the tribes below and how they had found him and instantly recognised him as a great and noble warrior, and they had taught him to cast and work the metal. He handed the axe to his First Captain, Alino Darador, and it has been passed down to every First Captain in the chapter ever since.

This weapon confers one extra melee attack, already included in the profile above using the ‘Dragon Tooth Blade’ profile below.

10,000 years ago, as the Word Bearers and Ultramarines battled through the caverns of Calth after the great betrayal on the surface, one weapon earned a fearsome reputation among the traitors and became a grim harbinger of hope for the loyalists. No one is sure of its origins, but some have claimed it was on route to be presented to Lord Guilliman himself by the Mechanicum who had crafted a unique weapon only fit for a primarch. In the tunnels below the surface, its firy breath belched corrosive flames that enveloped the enemies of the Ultramarines. It earned its name, The Dragon of Calth, from both sides of the conflict, and became a terrifying whisper in the eternal night of that subterranean world. None remember how it came into the possession of the Mortifactors, but it has been a fixture of their armoury since the chapter’s birth.

Valedrix – 1st Captain of the Mortifactors

mortifactors 1st captain

Every 1st Company needs its own Terminator Captain, and I’ve happily found mine – Aikos Valedrix. The keen-eyed among you might be thinking ‘hang on, that’s just the Terminator chaplain’ and save a few bits and pieces changing round, you’d be right. It’s the good thing about the Mortifactors really; if it’s got a skull on it, it automatically fits in. In this case, the skull helm looked perfect and I needed a 1st Captain. Done.

I’m really pleased with the overall paint job here, and the minor conversions that went into it. You might notice the removal of an Imperial cross, and a sensor swapped with a skull and really, excluding the arms (we’ll get to those shortly), that’s it. There are plenty of skulls and that’s all you need for the Mortifactors. In terms of the painting, I like the small skull plate over his waist, and I’m also quite proud of his gauntlets too. I spent a long time making sure I got everything right with this guy and while the techniques are all pretty standard, the effort’s there so they can still make the mini pop. Also, I like his glowing blue eyes – very moody.

IMG_0285

The axe means he’s going to need his own rules – Terminator Captains apparently can’t carry these (which is just silly), so I’m looking forward to getting those written as they also give me the opportunity to give it a bit of flavour and fluff. So I’m calling that Tezuka’s Axe – the first bit of Posul bronze used in weapon-craft by the chapter’s founder himself as he proved to all his men that the twilight world had something of great value for them. Anyway, the rules are to follow soon. I have to say, the one bit of the model that I don’t like, is the handle on the axe. I need to practice these a bit more as they can be a source of great detail. This one had to be rescued a coupled of times but hopefully it looks ok now.

mortifactors terminator captain

The other part of the model that needs some rules written for it is the combi-flamer which I’m calling The Dragon of Calth. I’m not thrilled about the blade on this and it might get redone, but I love the overall look of this monstrous weapon. Also, i’m quietly pleased with that skull on the shoulder there – quite a nice one from my ever-growing collection.

converted terminator captain

I’m quite proud of all the detail I got on the top of this model too – lots of little lines on that parchment. I should also say that the base is made from a bit of roof slate. It’s a great material that takes paint really nicely and usually provides a nice flat base while still being interesting. This one needed a little putty added as this guy was at one point on tip toes due to a slight slope and that is not a good look for anyone in TDA.

And now, as a small treat shot, here’s a snap of my 1st Company so far. They’re not going to be the biggest part of my force, but they certainly have been a lot of fun to do, and they definitely stand out…

mortifactors 1st company

Anyway, this has been a really fun break away from more boring unspectacular projects but it’s time to get back to the utility stuff. I’ll look back with a lot of fondness at my time painting this guy up – it has been a blast. Onwards!

Another Update Of Sorts – Slow Progress On Posul

It feels like a lot has been going at my hobby desk of late, but very little progress is being made. I think this happens to all of us, but I realised it has been a couple of weeks since I posted anything here so I thought I ought to show you something, even if it’s not that much.

As many of you will know, I’m currently working on a Stormraven for the Mortifactors and there has been some progress on that. Some.

stormraven underside

Basically, I’m doing the boring underside first (speaking from experience, it’s the right way round to do it) and that’s probably why I’m not so motivated to get on with it at the moment. It takes a lot of edge work, and that’s even before I get to the cleaning up, detailing and the weathering aspects of it. There’s still a whole heap to do, but it’s slow, and I’m getting easily distracted by pretty much anything else.

One thing that isn’t distracting me though are my Devestators. Two are done as you may have seen in an a older post, but three of them are just sat there looking undone and a bit sad. I need to get back onto these quick as I don’t want to lose interest in them.

devestators waiting patiently

Oh, the guilt. Not only do I feel sorry for my little unfinished toy soldiers, but I feel guilty for myself and for having to show you three unpainted, unbuilt miniatures. It’s just not on. Not much I can do about it with the heavy work load I’ve got on right now, but one day. And soon. Hopefully.

There is something perhaps you should look forward to a little more though, that may well get finished before the Stormraven (given that I’m actually really enjoying working on it). I won’t give too much away now, but here’s a sneak peek of what’s coming soon here…

what could it be

And while I’ll leave you guessing on that one for a while, I would like to crow a little about one of my previous posts on this blog regarding the Mechanicum release. I think I did rather well really with my predictions. Ok, there’s a lot I didn’t get right and to be honest I think GW missed a trick not releasing a Magos or Master in a clam pack. However, I did say A dual walker kit would be coming (and it did), and a dual 10 man infantry kit (and that did too), and I also called ‘no Legio Cybernetica (and there was none). So I’d like to say I did alright with that. Might have another go for the upcoming Eldar Craftworld Codex, but I’ll leave that for another post.

adeptus_mechanicus

And that’s about it from me this week. I shall try and do more and get more shiny things to show you. I may take a minor break from the Mortifactors soon as I think the black and bone scheme is starting to get to me a little, but rest assured that I’m still enjoying the project and I am still looking forward to doing much more with it. Onwards!

A Day In The Life – My Hobby Sunday

Posted by johnnya10 on 30/03/2015
Posted in: My Painting and Modelling. Tagged: Space Marines. 3 Comments

This Sunday was a rare one for me in that I actually had nothing on. No meeting friends or family, no tasks or chores that needed completing; I was free. I could do whatever I wanted for the first time in ages and, like any good hobbyist, I elected to spend said Sunday sat at my desk, painting and modelling away.

Then, perhaps in an effort to undermine my day of freedom, I came across the kit that I needed to get to work on and I have to confess, it’s one of my least favourite kits from GW (more on that later) and it has been sat undercoated and mocking me for months. I speak of the Stormraven.

You see, having seen Forge World’s ‘now available for pre-order’ Xiphon Pattern Interceptor and realising that I want two of those, I couldn’t bear the thought of having a grey tide with three flyers in it even for a moment, so I’ve pledged to myself that I won’t be buying those Xiphons until this Stormraven is done. That’s what Sunday was for, and this is how I started my day…

9:39 AM

empty desk

Ah, the fresh and empty desk. A verdant land full of promise. A new space where new ideas can be chopped up, glued together again and slathered in Abaddon Black. I cleaned up a bunch of paints, sprues and empty fizzy drinks cans before enjoying a light breakfast and taking a bath. I then sat down to begin a day of pure hobby pleasures.

11:02 AM

building a thunderhawk

I really do hate this kit. It took ages to get to this stage and that’s barely anything. I sealed up the interior at this point because I realised I could get some good bits for the bits box from it and I was never going to have any reason to have those doors open so why not. What’s more, it means one less thing to paint. With this kit, getting the tail on is the first moment where you think ‘Oh yeah, it looks like something’ so this was kind of a nice moment. Kind of.

11:35 AM

stormraven pilot painting

Right. Time to get the paints out for the first time today. Having worked on this kit previously (I have a Grey Knights Stormraven somewhere) i know that not an awful lot gets seen when this is done, so this isn’t going to be the best paint job ever. It won’t be sloppy but there won’t be much in the way of embellishments either. Let’s get brushing.

12:27 PM

painting stormraven pilot

Cockpit complete! And work on fixing the horrendous panel gaps with green stuff under way.

14:31 PM

painting stormraven pilot

Ok, cockpit actually complete now. My Techmarine pilot is done and the panel gaps have been properly fixed now. It should also be noted that I had lunch around this time – a goats cheese and red onion marmalade sandwich which was very pleasant. And as you can tell, to break up the silence, I started watching Adventure Time too. Mathematical.

14:46 PM

cockpit completeWell, that was pointless. At least the panel gap is fixed, and it now comes with added missiles.

16:30 PM

fixing stormraven panel gaps

The main body is almost complete now. I had to have a few breaks in between this post and the previous one due to my work stool becoming somewhat uncomfortable. I think I was numb from the waist down at one point.

As you can see, I’m having to fix another panel gap here with green stuff. This is why I loathe this kit, and some other big kits too. If you don’t get everything dead on straight, you end up with gaps or things at weird angles. I measured, remeasured and placed calmly but to no avail. Maybe it’s just me (I’m almost certainly part of the problem here) but this is part of what I have been dreading about this kit. Green stuff has got me covered though, so I can make do with these mends.

17:56 PM

weapons pod

Next up was the little servitor weapons pod. Going for Lascannons for tank-hunting power. The servitor himself got a considerably quicker paint-job than the Techmarine – you can see how little clear glass is available to show him off and no-one’ll be looking at him anyway. I know that’s a lazy attitude but by this point in the day, I was fine with it.

20:20 PM

pub

After doing a bit more work on that cockpit and painting a black layer all over the Stormraven itself, I went for a little walk and then stopped in at the pub for a couple of pints to see off the weekend. I can’t stay indoors without break for a whole day – I just can’t, and it was a nice way to end the weekend and a day of modelling and painting.

22:34 PM

stormraven gunship ready to paint

So there we have it. The whole kit is now ready for some attentive painting which will come over the next couple of weeks hopefully. I’ll have those Xiphons in no time! What’s more, I can throw away a load of sprues that have been bugging me for months. Winning. And at least, by this stage, I had the Naked Gun to keep me company (I miss Leslie Nielsen).

I’ll keep you posted of course as this thing develops and more work gets done on it. It does look cool when it’s done, but I still hate putting this thing together. Still, it’s done now. Onwards!

Mortifactors Devestator Squad – The Missile Launchers

mortifactors missile launchers

It’s only taken three weeks to do these two (I told you I was going slowly at the moment) but I’m pretty pleased with these guys – the first of my Mortifactors Devestators.

I’d like to start by saying that the phrase ‘Mortifactors Devestators’ is something i find very enjoyable. It rolls off the tongue in a delightfully death-filled sort of way, and I appreciate that. Eventually they will be a squad of 10 (some time around August if my current slow work rate continues), but the first two are done and these are the guys I’m pointing out today.

space marines with missile launchers

With regards to the Devestator kit, as previously mentioned, it is showing its age. It is full of seams and very static, but it’s still pretty fun to play around with. Of course, you only get one missile launcher with the kit, so the second one was a spare from one of the tactical squads I’v worked on. Mixing up the kits like this has its benefits – Space Marines have to do a lot of ‘make do and mend’ within their chapters and the likelihood of them having 10 or even two identical weapons drops due to myriad reasons. The weapons do look slightly different and the changes are subtle enough that you only spot them if you’re looking.

For the Mortifactors Devestator squad marking, I’ve gone for a vertical line in bone on a black background on the right shoulder. Yes, that is very simple, but their other shoulders will all be skulls and flames (in my previous notes on their heraldry, I noted that heavy weapons training earns them the right to add a fiery design to their skull) so there’s enough to mark them out.

devestators missile launchers

I’ve always been a big fan of missile launchers as heavy weapons, and though I haven’t included any in the tactical squads I’ve done so far, I’m glad I included them here. This Devestator Squad may be called on to offer some AA support in the future and having the option to add some flakk missiles is a nice thing to have, even if I don’t use it. When not called upon for that role, there’s still the armour-cracking strength of krak, and if any angry mobs start heading in your direction, you can frag them too. It’s versatile, but uncompromising, and that’s why it’s in here.

mortifactors with big guns

I may plough on with the rest of this squad, or I may mix things up a bit next, before working on the next two heavy weapons. Not sure yet, but keep an eye on this blog to find out what’s next!

…But wait! There’s more!

henry south miniatures

My good friend, Henry South (of 4gotowar.blogspot.co.uk), is offering you a great chance to support a noble cause and get your hands on some amazing things too. Henry and I were both very much inspired by Terry Pratchett when we were young and to this day we are both avid readers and quoters (I can still make him giggle with my Nanny Ogg impression) of this extraordinary man’s work. Well, Henry put up a couple of his models (which have appeared in Blanchitsu in Visions! – shown above) to be won and all you have to do to enter this raffle is make a donation via this just giving page. The money goes to the Alzheimer’s Society who provide care for those who suffer from what Sir Terry called the ’embuggerance’ of Alzhaimer’s disease, and also goes towards research to help fight it. And just to sway you even more to give, John Blanche has also contributed the original illustration below to Henry’s efforts.

john blanche illustration

It’s like Fred and Nobby in the 41st Millennium.

Many other fine painters have put their work in too, so you could end up with several amazing models, and/or a John Blanche original and all you have to do is give to charity. Not bad, eh? There will be three winners and the draw will take place on April 28th. Please give what you can and use the link above.

Mars Attacks! – Look Busy For The Omnissiah Cometh.

Sorry. For those of you who aren’t up on your binary, the above simply says ‘All glory to the Omnissiah’ for he is come and we can soon expect to see the red robes of Mars billowing across far more battlefields of the 41st Millennium more than ever before (you can read all about the clues on BOLS here). Yes, Martians abound and we need to know what to expect to see bounding mechanically towards our armies in the coming weeks and months. Ergo, here’s my unfounded and ever-so-slightly wishlisty guesses regarding what we might see coming our way.

admech codex

The Troops

The one big, glaring, red-eyed omission (or should that be ‘omnimission’?) from FW’s range of Admech minis are the much storied core units of the Skitarii – the stalwart troops of any Martian force. Though the term ‘Skitarii’ refers to nearly all the Admech’s military forces, the Tech-Warriors or Hyspasists are essentially Mars’ equivalent of the Imperial Guard, so expect a ten man core unit with lasguns and maybe a few stranger special weapon options replacing the flamers and grenade launchers that the Astra Militarum favour. I’m expecting this box and maybe it might include options for creating a different unit too, or possibly including an option for a Praetorian (would prefer a separate five man kit for this) or Sagitarii, the elite and heavy weapons choices for this army respectively.

ad mech

The Clam Packs

Oooh, plenty of options here. Skitarii troops are led by Tribunes so it’s likely one of those will come in the box, but beyond that, we’re bound to have a Master and/or Magos. With any luck, we may also get a character as well, but the Admech have loads of options for this sort of thing and of course FW have already supplied a couple of these.

Vehicles

This is where it gets a little trickier to predict or, frankly, even guess. One or two variant kits are sure to be the options here, and I’m guessing some sort of walker (with a couple of variants), maybe along the lines of sentinels or war walkers for size, and a transport/shooty tank kit as well. Those two kits alone could create a strong, variable army with the above choices.

alpha legion vs mechanicus

Alpha Legion and Dark Mechanicum assault the loyalists of Mars.

What I Think We Won’t See

Legio Cybernetica. I think Forge World has got this covered and has done such an amazing job with it, GW won’t tread too heavily on those toes and it might encourage people to spend money with the sister store. What’s more, this could be a great way to get FW into the GW stores, an idea that has been bandied about a little in recent weeks.

adeptus_mechanicus

What’s Already There

There are already a number of kits that suit the Adeptus Mechanicus. Many Knight households are sworn to Mars and indeed Mars maintains its own Knight constructs too. The Mechanicum is also responsible for many divisions of Superheavy Tanks, so the Baneblades, Stormhammers and more can be counted with them. Tech Marines train with the Mechanicum and are sworn to keep the secrets of Mars, so it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch to see Thunderfire Cannons and Servitors accompanied by Tech Marines walking into battle alongside the Skitarii forces. And they’re bound to use Chimeras and maybe even Turox and Rhinos, so if GW wants to make a big codex list from a small release window, there are options already there.

It’s Not Long Until We Find Out

And to that end, I propose a little game. These are my predictions based purely off what I know of the Admech (less than some, more than others) and as I am oft want to maketh such predictions on this here blog, I thought that this time, I’d list these and we (and by ‘we’ I mean ‘I’) can cross them off as the release window goes on. If I don’t get a single one correct, I will listen to my readers for suitable punishments. Here’s the list then:

To Be Released:

• Hyspasists/Skitarii Box

• Praetorians Box

• Magos Clam Pack

• Master Clam Pack

• Vehicle (Walker)

• Vehicle (Tank)

To Not Be Released:

• Legio Cybernetica Units

To Be Included in Codex:

• Knights

• Superheavy Tanks

• Servitors

• Chimeras

• Tech Marines

mars

On that note, it’s up to you to start dreaming up suitable punishments and add them into the box below. Even if I just get a couple right, but over all am way off, I may concede to some sort of hobby punishment akin to a light flagellation but with painting – we shall see. I for one remain quietly confident.

What do you want to see in this release? Will you be starting an Admech Force? Do you venerate the Omnissiah? Comments below please!

Proof That I’m Doing Stuff – Relic & Mortifactors Updates

Posted by johnnya10 on 12/03/2015

I’ve got a bit of a bee in my bonnet at the moment about how long it seems to be taking me to get stuff done and the lack of my own original work coming up on this blog. When I had hours and hours to paint, I seemed to be getting something new up every week but that has not been the case of late, and in an effort to prove (as much to myself as to you) that I am still in the game, I thought I’d show you some of the stuff that I’m working on. Starting with, happily, something that’s completed! Yay!

Relic – Battle Sister

relic battle sister

This is the first member of the Adepta Sororitas that I’ve worked on in decades (has it really been that long!?), and it’s also a return to a project I kicked off months ago too. Firstly, apologies for the rubbish shots – didn’t have much time to fire these photos off so resorted to the iPhone and was instantly reminded about why I splashed for a DSLR at the end of last year. When painting this over the last couple of days, I was also reminded about how much I hate painting this weird rubber stuff that FFG use for these busts and its own general hatred of paint and being painted.

relic adepta sororitas

However, in the flesh, this looks a lot better and I’m very happy with it. It’s the 5th piece I’ve done for the game and that means I’m half way through this project. One day, I’ll actually get a game in, which will be nice. Also, when they’re all done, I’ll fire off some shots that do them justice.

The Golden Hour – Finding Time to Paint my Devestators

dev 1

If you can’t find time, make time. Not a bad adage to live by during the times when you can’t seem to find a second to get any painting done. And because of that, I am now waking up one hour earlier every day, and using that time to paint. I’m calling it the Golden Hour because not only is it lighter in the morning now, it’s ensuring that I start the day with a creative burst and a smile on my face. If you can do it, I recommend it because it really is quite energising.

It’s already paying dividends and, as you can see from the snap above, one Devestator is done and the second one is under way. In fact, that second one is coming along really nicely now and this approach is really starting to move things along at a far more acceptable pace. I’ll do a bit more of a write-up on these guys next week when (hopefully) I have another one finished.

One thing that I’m already appreciating is how far Space Marine kits have come since these Devs were first brought out. Having worked on the new tactical squads and the Vanguard Vets recently, I took my eye off the ball a bit when it came to looking for casting faults, because those new kits have none. These older kits though, well, there are seams and joins everywhere, and some bits really don’t sit flush against other bits… basically, there’s a fair bit of rescuing happening as I go along which could have been avoided had I been more vigilant. Lesson learned for next time.

Future Plans – A Quick Sneak Peek

1st cap sketch

This one’s coming up soon – my Mortifactors First Captain. I thought I’d share with you a quick sketch and some of the inspiration for him. Yes, it’s technically based on the Terminator Chaplain, but when you’re delaing with Mortifactors, everything has skulls, not just Chaplains. A couple of minor adjustments/conversions and he should be ready for painting relatively soon too. Here he is ready to get worked on:

There. I am doing stuff. Get off my back. Not that you were on it anyway. But whatever. Onwards!

The 39 Steps – My Plans for the Mortifactors

Those of you who regularly read this blog will know that at the tail end of last year, I made some rather bold statements about what I was planning to do this year to keep both myself and yourselves entertained. Well, I’d like to sheepishly and ashamedly request that you forget/ignore all of the timings involved in those project ideas. The ideas themselves stand, and I want to do it all still, but in terms of promising you two completed armies this year, plus open competition projects and what have you, there’s almost no way that’s all going to get done in 2015.

skeleton clock

Time makes fools of us all and at the moment it’s making my best laid plans look like the dribble-splattered ramblings of a certified lunatic. To give you some idea of what’s going on, and why this blog has become relatively quiet these days, it’s simply a lack of time on my part. Last year, I had maybe three or four nights a week where I could get down to some painting and post writing. So far this year, I seem to be lucky to get one evening. And it’s nothing exciting that’s keeping me away – it’s basically just work (and occasionally the need to drink to try and forget about the work).

This isn’t a unique problem. Lots of us toy soldier enthusiasts go through it. I’ve had dreams of winning the lottery, quitting my job and just spending my days painting in a luxury penthouse in central London (in between the class a drug binges, sexy parties and attempting to become a super villain). But we must put our dreams away and acknowledge that sometimes life has to come first. Ergo, I have scaled back my plans for 2015 accordingly, but don’t you dare think for one second that I’m out of the game – I shall persevere.

The 39 Steps

39-steps-poster

No, not the book/film – my plan. The first thing I scaled back on were the sheer number of projects that I can focus on, and the big one for me, as you may well be aware, is the Mortifactors army that I’ve been slaving away over for more than a year now. When I started on this, I wanted to create a detachment large enough, varied enough, and painted to such a standard that it would have a good chance of getting into Visions as an Army of the Month. That’s been a dream of mine for many years now and this is the best chance I’m going to have, so I’m going for it. I’m not saying it will ever get into that magazine, but I want it to be at that sort of size and standard so that I can look at it and say ‘yeah, that’s pretty awesome’.

So I started planning things out, and worked out how to ‘complete’ it. There would be 39 steps or, if you prefer, 39 units, that would need to be completed in order for me to do this. To date, I have completed 13 of these. That’s one third of what I’m hoping to achieve, which means I’ve got plenty to do, and at my current rate of about one unit a month, it means I’ve got a couple of years of ‘all the skulls!’ to look forward to (unless that lottery win happens). Want to see my fevered scrawlings? Well here they are:

hobby plans

That doesn’t mean that all you’ll be seeing from me is Mortifactors. No-one can stare at black and bone for a whole year without feeling the dire need for a bit of colour once in a while. This will not become a Mortifactors only blog and I already have some fun ideas for what I can do to keep this place lively and colourful, and if I’m lucky, they’ll all fit into my schedule too.

Fear not, loyal readers. Though I am not as vocal as once I was, I am still doing my thing. It’s just a bit slower than it used to be. Onwards!

So Long And Thanks For All The Hobbits – When Tolkien Leaves, Will 40k Prosper?

funny bilbo

Now, I’m not one for knocking things too much on this blog, and I’d like to keep it like that. True, there’s the occasional dig against the truly stupid, but over all, I like to consider this to be a virtual space of relative positivity. So I’m not going to gloat, crow or laugh at the idea of the Tolkien-based games drifting into ‘webstore only’ obscurity now that Mr Jackson has finally finished milking that cash cow of every last bloody cent. And why would I? It has bought plenty of people a lot of pleasure. Not ‘lots’ of people, but plenty. I’m not about to do a little dance now that something I never enjoyed or even admired has slipped by the wayside as I know other people did enjoy it. I will however do a little dance if this means some shelf space is freed up for new armies and models for 40k. I’m favouring an understated polka at the moment, but I’m open to suggestions.

Question_Mark

The question then arises: what new shiny things will we be getting? The internet news sites and forums related to this hobby have been doing their finest beehive impressions over the last couple of weeks and been all abuzz with gossip, rumours and vague fantastical ramblings from whatever seers they’ve sought to provide them with this info. I thought I’d do a wee digest for you here, and give my own uninformed, wish-based and bound-to-be-so-wrong opinions, so let’s get started.

Warhammer 30,000

30k

Currently a domain exclusive to Forge World, this part of the narrative has proven to be a massive hit, and if they have the facilities to support it (and surely they do), is it any wonder GW themselves want a piece of this pie (even if FW are kind of like another piece of the pie, that’s already eating the pie… wait, no – it’s best to think of Forge World being like that mouth on the end of Alien’s tongue… or something). New old-timey Space Marines in plastic that might encourage people to start spending even more money on FW’s ‘A Grade’ plastic crack in the future – sounds pretty smart to me. A boxed game, and a few kits to support it. Not bad…

A Different Boxed Game?

Necromunda

After the nostalgia-soaked love of Space Hulk and even the relative success of Dreadfleet (it really didn’t do them that badly – it was just a bit bad), maybe GW is buoyed into thinking they can run a third line that isn’t reliant on blockbuster movies. I think we can safely assume they’re unlikely to revisit Epic/Inquisitor scale games, but those of us who recall Necromunda and Gorka Morka know that GW can do this, but they’ll need (and I mean NEED) to support it to keep it alive.

Adeptus Mechanicus

What army have people been begging for since… well, Rogue Trader really? Another of FW’s success stories could get a GW Codex along with a release on the same scale as the Harlequins. A couple of characters, a diverse unit/troop box and a couple of vehicles and you’ve got something that people will flock to. What’s more, that’ll almost certainly see more sales for FW too. Win Win Win!

Sisters of Battle

I feel I should whisper that as to not get your hopes up too high. It’s another army people are desperate to get back and there are strong whisperings to support this. Personally, I’d love to see them again, but I think we’ve had rumours about them every year since they first disappeared from the stores.

Forge World in Store

Coming at it from a different angle, now that FW have moved to boxes and blisters, why not have their merchandise in store? It might be tough for them to support their whole range like this, but GW are definitely looking to get them more involved with people’s regular spending habits and this might be a winner. If they just put up a couple of IA books and the ‘40k Approved’ models of the moment in the larger stores, that’d be a start.

Other Things

40k lizardmen

There are plenty of rumours out there. A new Xenos force, Lizardmen and/or Skaven jumping over from Fantasy, a new line of Apocalypse units, the return of Genestealer cults or the Slaan… My favourite rumour (though I’m almost 100% sure that it’s no more than that) is that Blood Bowl will be coming back. I know that’s not 40k but I love that game and it would be amazing to see it come back again. Curiously for this sort of time of intrigue, no one has mentioned Squats, but can they ruled out? Yes, they probably can be. Maybe it’ll be…

In Conclusion

Well, in conclusion, I’d have to say that we know nothing. Least of all me. Especially me in fact. But I kind of like these days of having no idea what new toys will be flowing from the Dark Citadel in Nottingham in the grim darkness of the not too distant future. Maybe we’ll get Warhammer 50,000 – who the heck knows, right? It’s so up in the air, heldrakes are chasing it through the clouds. But there are plenty of juicy rumours and the gossip-mongers are muddying the waters and all we really can say is that, due to that freed up wall space, we’re going to get something. Let’s just hope it turns out to be something cool.

Mortifactors Contemptor II: Nameless Death

mortifactors contemptor dreadnought 2

Stomping his way onto tabletops in the near future is this brutal creation, my second Mortifactors Contemptor Dreadnought who has been given the title of ‘Nameless Death’. Armed with two power claws carved from Posul bronze and a skull helm, this guy is as much about intimidation as he is about brutal close-quarters killing power.

The keen-eyed and geeky amongst you (so that’s all of you then) and those who keep up with this little blog of mine will have recognised that this miniature used to be the Night Lords Contemptor chassis, but simply by removing a pair of bat wings (and by making a couple of other minor tweaks), I have been able to turn him into a pretty perfect Mortifactors Mini. I also left out the rotting heads that come with the dread, even though some of those were skulls, they were a bit more NL than M – more about fear than ritual.

The pose is a little static, but I was trying to go for a stationery pose that had a ‘come at me bro’ kind of feel and I think I’ve just about managed that. It could have gone worse, and the end result has a definite menace to it . The base is simple (though annoyingly, I appear to have been a bit stingy on the stand so from some angles he looks like he’s light enough not to make a mark in it, but this can be fixed if needs be) and I even experimented with a RMM technique for copper on that broken column/pipe thing.

On the fluff side of things, I decided to call him ‘Nameless Death’ because I couldn’t think of a name, and because I already wrote ‘Mortis’ on the middle part of his chest banner. That aside though, I like to think of him as an ancient machine, still showing the scars of battles that Sasebo Tezuka led the Mortifactors into himself. Over the centuries, between lost records and the creeping insanity that comes with being entombed alive within a dreadnought, the name of this warrior has long since been lost. All that remains is his martial prowess and his desire to crush the enemies of the Emperor.

contemptor with claws

There ain’t much new on the painting front here. Really happy with the claws as they are looking thoroughly nasty and once again prove that my much tried and tested bronze technique still holds its own. What’s more, it had been a while since I’d done anything with the Mortifactors so it was good to find out that I can return to it and no bodge it up too badly.

You might also notice a slight improvement with the pictures this time round. The new fancy-pants camera is doing very nicely thank you, though there are still areas where I need to learn things and still a few small toys to buy to help out. It’s coming along though and I’m sure you’ll agree that these snaps are plenty better than the old potato-quality shots I used to stick up here. I even managed to get this murky shot…

spooky contemptor pic

Well, I hope you enjoyed the pretty pictures almost as much as I enjoyed painting him up. It was fun, but it took me a good while to do, so maybe something smaller and faster next. Onwards!
