Mortifactors Tactical Marines 2:2

Mortifactors Tactical Marines

II Squad, 2nd Company, Mortifactors

Nine Space Marines shouldn’t seem like a tough job, but these guys have meant a lot of hours hunched over my desk in the last couple of weeks. Presenting to you, my second squad of Mortifactors Tactical Marines, fittingly, II Squad, 2nd Company. I’m pretty pleased with them if I do say so myself.

So what’s new with these chaps, then? Well, er, not much if you can remember all the way back to my first squad. Actually, thinking about it, the changes are so subtle, they’re rather hard to pick out in these images (trying out the phone on my new camera – yes, I’m a slave to the mighty Apple). I’ve grown a little bolder in my highlighting with the lightest highlights on black now being Administratum Grey, rather than Dawnstone as it was with my previous tactical squad. I’ve had a lot more practice painting skulls of all sizes now too, and the ones seen on here are far fancier than IV Squad. But that’s quite good for fluff – IV Squad get a lot more new Marines, who’ve not had time to develop their skills at painting their own skulls onto their shoulder guards.

Mortifactors bolters multi melta

That Multi Melta remains the centrepiece of the squad as it is. I also really like the skull with flames (symbolising heavy/special weapons training/duties – slightly better pick below) that he’s got. I’m learning to embrace a slightly more ‘comic book’ style to my miniatures, and I’m a lot more comfortable leaving the ideas of realism and hyper-realism behind. I prefer a more sci-fi look… I don’t think I’m explaining this very well. That’s for another post when I can figure out what I’m actually talking about, but in essence, I’m finding a comfortable style to work in.

boltguns

If I don’t have to paint another boltgun for a year, it’ll be too soon. The kit, as stated when I put together the first squad, is a joy to work with (loads of options/combos), but the arms remain fiddly – particularly set ‘D’. Anyone else who has worked on these guys will likely attest to that. I also kept accessories to a minimum with this squad – there are just a few sets of grenades around, but far fewer purity seals and pouches.

mortifactors melta gun bolters

By far my favourite of all the minis that I put together from this squad, is the dude with the Melta gun. I’m happy with the look of the weapon, but his stance is perfect too. It’s like he’s just spotted something on tracks that, in a few moments, will be a smouldering pile of liquid metal. I enjoy that.

And yes, as you may have spotted, this is very much a tank-hunting tactical squad. Gives you some idea what the Sergeant will have, but he’s not done yet – he’ll be with us soon…

I shall leave you with a few shoulder pad shots that you might enjoy. Not overly sold on the camera, but these were shot at 11pm last night so not a lot of natural light and probably a slightly unsteady hand too (yes, more excuses). Anyway, the Sergeant will be coming soon – Onwards!

On Various Things – A ‘Sort Of’ Post Regarding 40k

Posted by johnnya10 on 23/09/2014
Posted in: Thoughts and Comment. 2 Comments

Most weeks, I try to come up with something to talk about here, but on rare occasions, such as this, it’s a case of something and nothing. I’ve got no big topic I want to delve into, no eye-opening, jaw-dropping or any other sort of orifice enlarging statement to make. Nor do I have a posing question that’s confounding me to the extent that I have the urge to share or burden you with it to any great degree. I do however have a few, smaller things that I’ve been mulling over – none of which probably deserves its own post at this stage. And that’s what this ‘sort of’ post is about really. A handful of talking points that probably aren’t worth talking about too much. So, if you’re having a bit of a slow day and want to kill five minutes, you might find this vaguely compelling.

Changing Colours – The Mortifactors Look Mortifactors Captain with Axe and Jetpack When I started working on the Mortifactors, I painted my Lord Executioner, and as he was going to be in Artificer Armour, I changed up the colour scheme of the chapter a little. But because I liked the way it looked, I carried it over to all of the marines that I’ve worked on since. The differences are subtle, but it’s still drawn the odd comment ranging from engaged and interested to the nerdrage that declares me to be wrong and evil and more wrong. Personally, I don’t care about the latter and I’m happy to explain to the former that the reason for me doing it like this is simple: I think they look better my way.

mortifactors colour variations

Left: Original Mortifactors Colour Scheme. Right: My Mortifactors Colour Scheme.

It’s a purely aesthetic thing. I guess i prefer ‘uggs’ to little black booties (that seems to be the bit that most people seem to notice). Besides, the Mortifactors don’t do anything the way they ought to, and that’s one of the reasons I enjoy embellishing their fluff. To some, my decision to paint them a little differently is as borderline heretical as the chapter itself and I’m quite proud of that.

Dark Eldar – My ‘Vienna’

If you’re familiar with the music of Ultravox, you’ll know that with regards to Vienna, and to paraphrase Midge Ure himself, ‘this release means nothing to me’. That was a rather tortured and awkward way of saying that I don’t care about Dark Eldar. Not in a nasty way – indeed, the new minis look really impressive and the fluff is pretty cool too. It’s just that they’ve never really been on my radar in terms of a hobby project. I’ve thought about it. Their starter box was always one of the better looking kits to get going with, but as ‘interesting’ a place like Commorragh might be, I wouldn’t want to live there. commorragh Ergo, I shall be saying little else on the subject, unless some particularly amazing model comes along (the Void Raven does look rather nice, but it’s not really me…), I shall keep my council and stay schtum. To all you DE players out there, I hope you get lots of lovely, sadistic goodies.

Chaos Gods are Gathering chaos star I’m not much of a rumour monger as far as hobby bloggers go, but there have been plenty of rumours circulating about the Chaos Greater Daemons getting plastic models soon, as well as resculpts to bring them into the modern era (which is very exciting!). This will be part of WFB’s End Times gig (though of course Chaos transcends both games) and this has already produced some stunning sculpts. By many accounts, this has been revitalising to the game and that’s no bad thing. Even I’ve been tempted to join the Bows n’ Arrows brigade and I’ve been a confirmed bolt gun man for a long time.

I have heard a salty whisper from the warp though – someone I’m vaguely friendly with says that he has seen the new Great Unclean One model. Now, I won’t name names or methods, and to be honest, I have little to go on myself, but it is *apparently ‘considerably’ larger than the existing one (though not quite as big as the FW GUO), that its styling brings it in line with the plaguebearers and particularly the drones from the last release, and that it can be assembled as a specific character. *Apparently it’s somewhere in between looking ‘goofy and terrifying’ which probably fits. I can’t see why this person would have a reason to lie (other than the obvious, though he’s not that sort) but then again I wasn’t wholly convinced – I could probably have guessed all that myself. Make of it what you will…

Plinth Shopping plinth Random question time – I need to mount my Slaaneshi Imperial Knight for Golden Daemon and therefore require a plinth. I was thinking about a simple bit of slate or just a block of wood, but was wondering if anyone else had any better/alternative notions. Anyone know where to buy a plinth for an Imperial Knight? (yes, that is probably the most bizarre question I’ll ask today).

Planning Next Year’s Projects

Ok, so this one will definitely get its own post as we get closer to 2015, but at the moment, I’m trying to decide what I’ll be working on in 2015. I’ve no idea what direction it’ll take, or if it will continue along the same path as 2014, but we’re almost into October now, so I need to get planning. calendar There’s a lot of musing going on regarding how I carry on with the Mortifactors, whether to carry on pursuing Daemons, how I’m going to build on Dios Toros and my Slaaneshi forces, and if I take on something like INQ28 or a Necromunda gang. Loads to think about but it’s early days yet – plenty to consider and who knows what GW/FW will bring out over the remaining days of 2014? The rate they’re going, it could be anything.

-=-=-=-

So, there you go. Something and nothing really. It’s almost a study in the random nonsense that goes through this particular hobbyist’s brain during a particular given week. Whether it’s of any interest to you is another matter, but if I’ve done nothing else, I hope I’ve helped you to enjoy five minutes well wasted.

p.s. Apologies for any formatting weirdness. It appears WordPress is having a minor crisis at the moment but I have tried to fix it.

Mortifactors Tacticals 2.1

mortifactors tactical marines

A quick update and some very bad photography regarding the work I’m doing on my second squad of Tactical Space Marines for my Mortifactors force. it’s five down, five to go, and yes, that is a rubbish/garbage bag that I’m using as a backdrop there – I’m on holiday at the moment so my usual resources aren’t to hand.

mortifactors side on

Is this how I spend my holiday? Well, not typically, no. But then it’s not like I’ve gone to Rome or Barcelona or anything. I’m taking a few days to unwind and help out my family back in rural South Oxfordshire and, well, there ain’t a lot to do here. Besides, what’s better for unwinding from a very, very busy time at work than with countryside walks, a few pints of real ale in the sunshine and painting some death-obsessed super soldiers from the 41st Millennium? Exactly.

These are taking about eight or more solid hours a piece to complete so moving through them is slow (I’m not the quickest of painters). Thankfully, it’s been very quiet here so I’ve had a bit of a chance to plough through them. These were the models that I said I would work on piecemeal but, to be honest, that just doesn’t suit me. In the few weeks since I made that declaration, I did almost nothing. True, the Contemptor took up a big part of my hobby efforts over that time, but I had no drive. I am now accepting that I need defined projects. I need to be able to say ‘I am painting this now, and that next, and this after that’ or I just flake out.

mortifactors with multi melta

The pride and joy from these first five tactical marines is my Multi Melta wielding heavy weapons specialist. I showed it off before but now that it’s painted, it looks a tad better. Should get some vehicles quaking in their boots (or tracks/wheels) anyway.

Here are a couple more pictures. When I’ve got the whole squad together, and when I’m back in the world of good cameras and non-disposable backdrops, I shall take more pictures. I just wanted you to know that I’ve not been resting on my laurels while convalescing in the countryside. Here are a couple more snaps though of bolter-wielding marines.

Oh, and this is Tom (I actually tend to refer to him as ‘Ratbag’ or ‘Mr Grumpy’). He’s been keeping me company while I paint and occasionally distracting me to demand food. Everyone likes cat pictures, right? 😉

Mortifactors Contemptor Dreadnought

Mortifactors Mortis Pattern Contemptor Dreadnought

Got firepower? You better believe it, buddy. Say hello to my Mortifactors Contemptor Dreadnought, Galador the Cursed (formerly Mr Stompy). Not only does he sport a pair of Kheres Pattern assault cannons, but he’s also rocking a frag and krak filled cyclone missile launcher – this is a Mortis Pattern Dread.

Based on the Death Guard body, this was a relatively simple ‘conversion’, hardly deserving of the name. I had to trim a few spikes and remove an ‘X’ from the body and that was it. Thank you Forge World for covering a Contemptor in little skulls. Speaking of skulls…

contemptor shoulder

Although this isn’t the best image (got the fancy camera but it’s not exactly easy to use, especially in low light – my own fault), this is quite possibly my best skull. This dreadnought is a member of the First Company and therefore wears the full skull on his shoulder automatically (as per my constructed fluff). The skull on the knee was difficult due to the angles but I love the look of this one.

The above image also highlights the ‘M’ which replaced the ‘XIV’. As mentioned, I had to trim off the ‘X’ and using some green stuff, was able to create a very simple initial that I’m really happy with.

kheres pattern assault cannon

Now, if you’re looking for a badass weapon that’s as fiddly as hell to put together, this is the gun for you. I ballsed it up a bit in truth. I cleaned them up but not enough and the imperfections were made more obvious by washes and highlighting. These were simple enough to paint, but putting them together was tense and required plenty of patience. The missile launcher too had its fair amount of issues.

mortifactors dread

I was a little concerned that the missiles would look a little too cartoony by having them a mix of red any yellow, but I wanted to demonstrate that some were frag and some were krak and these colours seemed to sit best. In the end, I like it, and seeing as Mortis Pattern Contemptors gain skyfire and interceptor if they don’t move in the prior turn, I expect to see these downing a few flyers one day soon.

The name Galador The Cursed comes from my fluff idea that the Mortifactors are not keen on Dreadnoughts. They delay death and as the chapter venerates mortality, these constructs are as close to abominable without being so that they can be. The Mortifactors use dreadnoughts only when they must and maintain fewer than most chapters. Well, in my very unofficial fluff at least.

contemptor back

freehand skull

It was a fun project but long, and there are plenty of parts that I’m not happy with, though all in all, I’m happy. Painting a big Forge World piece is always a joy and I think I did this one justice.  Until the next time, enjoy one last final shot of this monster.

10 Little Joys That Every Hobbyist Should Appreciate

Posted by johnnya10 on 08/09/2014
Posted in: Thoughts and Comment. Leave a comment

You ever think about why you paint? Why you play? What you’re doing with this hobby? There are some obvious plus points, such as the games, the social aspect, the competitions, the collecting, etc, but there are so many little wins in this hobby. There are so many small moments that make you smile, grin or even laugh (like a crazy person, but a happy crazy person) that I wanted to jog your memories a little. There are others, but these are my favourite 10 little joys that the hobby hands out to any who take part in it.

1. A new brush

brushes

When you pick up a brand new brush, remove its fresh bristles from the little plastic guard and just take a moment to stare at it. That perfect shape, brought to a needle thin point. Is there anything so sexy?

2. The faultless FW piece

forgeworld logo

Where the pretty things come from…

When you get resin pieces, you’re used to slight bowing or the occasional weak point, or even a bubble once in a while. Once in a blue moon though, you clip it all from the sprue and you can see no imperfections, no blemishes and you just let how awesome that is sink in.

3. The perfect conversion

so much win

“I didn’t even need any green stuff!”

Like a surgeon, snipping carefully away at those tiny plastic bits, you gingerly remove one piece and you hope that it’s going to work and then, when you match it up to where it will go and it aligns so perfectly… sploosh.

4. A tidy desk

my painting station

A place for everything and everything in its place. It may not last long (it usually never does), but when you sit down at your work station and the desk is free of clutter and mess, you say to yourself ‘Yes. Yes, I will do well in this unknown and pleasant land’.

5. FW’s weekly Email

fw weekly email

They’ve been mixing it up recently, but it used to be that every Friday afternoon, some new goody would be revealed in your email inbox. Even if it wasn’t for your army, you could still ooh and aah about it. Best email of the week.

6. Putting your brush down after a long project

hammock kitten

Annnnd relax. That last little detail is done and you can put down your mini and your brush and just stare at it. Proud of your accomplishment, happy with your efforts, you can just stare at it and feel your muscles relax. Bathe in those fleeting, glorious moments people, bathe in them.

7. Your Army getting something new and shiny

new minis doge

It used to be a long wait, but GW are seriously putting their foot down with new releases and coming up with some amazing sculpts right now. A new model for your army is always cause for celebration.

8. Opening a new codex and finding the wins

new codex success

There’s always a hefty thwack from the nerf bat, but there’s usually a nice bonus or two in there as well. A weapon getting some power creep, points drops to your favourite unit, awesome psychic powers… they’ll be in there. Even Nid players have to admit to finding some nice things now.

9. Mastering a new technique

bob ross

That day when you go onto a site that showcases quality work and you see that, for example, your NMM technique is on a par with someone who everyone thinks of as a great painter. That is a good day. Treasure it.

10. Completing an army

space marines

When you finish your 2000pts list of Space Marines, this is how it looks like to you.

You might have envisioned it a year back, or even more, but that first moment when you can stand back from your desk and see the whole army, in all of its glory, this is possibly the greatest feeling a miniature painter can have. The herculean effort, the blood, sweat and tears, the self-imposed isolation and the hours of lost sleep are all worth it at this point. This is why we paint and why we enjoy it.

Now, you may have your own little moments of simple bliss and understated (and often misunderstood) pleasures relating to the hobby, but I think that everyone who paints and plays enjoys some, if not all of these things. This growth, progression and simple happiness are as rewarding as the games, the victories and the collecting. This is where we get our kicks and to ensure that you can always find something to enjoy in all of these toy soldiers, take a moment, and think about your own little enjoyments. You won’t regret it.

WIP – Mortifactor’s Mr Stompy

contemptor wip

That’s what I’m calling him for the moment. Mr Stompy. Suits pretty nicely, don’t you think? Of course, for his heraldry and fluff I’ll pick something more fitting (thinking ‘Malidor the Cursed’ at the moment) but for now, he’s Mr Stompy (well, all he he really has are his massive Ugg Boots), and I’m rather fond of his company. Painting Contmeptors is alwaysw fun and as this is going to be part of a project close to my heart, it’s even more of a joy to flick the brush over.

work in progress contemptor

I managed to get some time to paint him this weekend and though I thought I might have been able to get him done, turns out that laziness, socialising and a pressing need to be outside while the last of the summer sun is with us meant that I had to settle for just getting the legs/groin completed. The most basic part of that torso is done but there’s a lot in terms of details there that need completing still, not to mention arms (both shoulder guards and weapons), head, base and missile launcher still to do. Actually, this angle (the one in the above photo) highlights best why I’m calling him Mr Stompy – until I get that base done and some arms on him, it shall be thus. Stomp stomp stomp.

dread wip

Went for a chequer board pattern on one knee, as a well as an obligatory skull on the other (though the angles made that skull particularly hard to paint). They still need the slightest bit of retouching but they’re essentially done. Also, I always worry about how the bone effect will look on larger areas, but it has turned out quite nicely again with this piece – the important thing is not to overdo it, and also to scale up appropriately. Hopefully, if you’ll excuse the pun, I’ve cracked it. *groans heard across the internet*

I’m hoping to get a little more time to work on Mr Stompy this week but I’m in for another busy one with work, etc. Like a really busy one. In fact, working on this would be a great way for me to hide away from the general stressiness of it all (he types plotting cunningly). Winner. Oh and, as always, apols for the dodgy images on this post. As mentioned prior, a good proper camera will be employed when capturing the finished job. Onwards!

Why We Need Eldar To Get A Real Revamp

Posted by johnnya10 on 27/08/2014
Posted in: Thoughts and Comment. Tagged: Eldar. Leave a comment

When I set out my 2015 mission statement earlier in the year, I purposefully left Eldar out of it, and yet they’re an army very close to my heart and one that I’d love to do more work with, but I have a problem, and that problem’s name is ‘finecast’.

samuel finecast

As has been stated here, and on every other hobby-concerned blog, forum, social media page and in any discussion between fellow enthusiasts, there are myriad problems with this medium and I won’t dwell on those too much. However, whereas many painters and players have had some individual characters and components spoiled by finecast’s issues, the Eldar’s very core, it’s heart has suffered a horrible fate at its hands.

The thing that I, and many others love the Eldar for, are the Aspects. There’s a reason why the Court of the Young King has always been one of the most popular formations in Apocalypse Games (that’s an Avatar and a squad from each Aspect – for them that don’t know it). No one gets into an Eldar army for the Guardians, the rangers, or even the grav tanks. The Wraith part of this army has grown beautifully and usefully since the last codex but the dead guys, while awesome, still don’t have the iconic perfection that are the Aspect Warriors.

Eldar Warp Spiders

I’ve worked on some of these before. I’ve got some Fire Dragons, Dire Avengers and some Striking Scorpions (not of the sort of quality that I’d put on this blog), as well as the Warp Spiders that you may have seen before on this blog (if not, they’re just above), sitting on my shelves. I was excited to paint them but soon realised the limitations. They are static. They are monotonous. The current finecast (sorry, Samuel) models just make for an unsatisfying experience, because, without really skilled conversions, there’s very little you can do to make each squad look different.

So how do you fix it? Even with the amount GW are churning out now, six new plastic kits is a big ask and Eldar only recently had a big release wave with their Codex. However, we should remember two things. Firstly, the new, more flexible release pattern that GW are aiming towards. Secondly, when looking at the poses of the Aspect Warriors, you could conceivably get this down to three kits full of posable options and details that would make any Eldar fan so much the happier.

kermit eldar

I noticed a long time ago (and you probably have too) that GW control your spending and options with legs. Legs don’t tend to have a vast amount of details, and they aren’t traditionally what people look at straight away (on a miniature at least), so in a box that has two or even three kits, you only need to include the amount of legs suitable for one of those units. Ergo, thinking about poses and shapes, and remembering that Dire Avengers have already moved in this direction, you can have one kit that creates Scorpions/Spiders, one that creates Dragons/Reapers and one that creates Hawks/Banshees.

scorpion spider illustration

Not convinced? Well, think of it like this: The arachnids should both be running, and though their upper halves need to be completely different, you still duplicate certain aspects in a big, multi-pose kit. Dragons and Reapers are both hefting big guns and really, only their weapons and heads need to be wholly different. Hawks and Banshees would be the trickiest but actually, the way the legs look is all in the arms – if they’re holding a sword and look like they’re running, they’ll look like they’re running, while holding a lasgun in both and putting some posable wings on them give them the look of taking off into flight. Take a look at the models now and you can see that this could, conceivably work.

Once that’s done, some plastic Harlequins and an Autarch with a few decent options is all that’s really left to get the army to a great point. The Phoenix Lords would also be a real treat to have in plastic but I love their poses despite their age so I’m in no rush to see them redesigned.

eldar old sculpts

Were I to believe that all of this could be done in 2015, I’d totally add Eldar back into my plans but, as it stands, they remain very low on my priority list. When I can create an unbound army of Scorpions and Spiders with forty of each, all in different poses, then I shall be back to the Eldar. Until then, they shall remain lowest on my priorities list, and I am a little bit sad about that.

If anyone at GW reads this blog (you never know!), please, from someone who has always been a fan of the Eldar, produce some plastic kits for all the Aspects. Three, six… however many you think it will take. They are the most glorious part of the Eldar and I, along with many others, would love to see these kits evolve into plastic. It would be the height of awesomeness and I’m sure Asuryan would reward you greatly.

WIPs – My Current Mortifactors Projects

hobby-brian

I realised that it has been a couple of weeks since I posted up any new pieces on here so I thought I’d share what I’m working on briefly. Not great photos but once they’re all done, I shall get the big camera out and do a proper shoot.

In truth, I haven’t really found a great deal of time to work on my hobby projects recently. Real life has been pretty busy and I’ve not been able to concentrate on my painting in a while. Work is demanding more of my attention than usual and personal life is in one of those annoyingly busy stages. What’s more, I’m tentatively trying to lose a bit of weight and get into shape too, so exercising is wiping me out some evenings. There’s plenty on my hobby plate though, including this big fella…

Mortifactors Contemptor Dreadnought

mortifactors-wip

Yep, I’ve got him all set up and ready for undercoating (stupid rain – that was going to be done by now) and I have to say that he’s looking pretty good, even in this very much undone state. This is what you, the reader, chose for me to do next and I’m a man of my word. I actually had to do a fair bit of work to get him away from being all Death Guardy and have taken the craft knife and green stuff to quite a few places.

converting-contemptor

There are several holes/wounds on this variant Contemptor and I had to fill in one of the larger ones on the torso because, while perfect for the Death Guard, it was a little OTT for the Mortifactors.

unpainted-contemptor

I’ve also trimmed off the little spikes around the Death Guard icons, leaving skulls which is absolutely perfect for my chapter. I’ve also based it, building it up on one side to give it a bit more personality and a more dynamic pose. Really looking forward to getting it painted now. Oh, and speaking of weapons…

contemptor-cyclone-missile-launcher

Not put together the Kheres cannons yet, but they shouldn’t be too much work. The cyclone launcher has been put together, but I’ll do all of the weapons aside from the legs/torso for ‘ease of painting’ reasons. The Contemptor was fine, but the above was plenty fiddly and a real FW classic in that respect. It does look awesome though, and sits very nicely on top of the Dread.

But that’s not all… Tactical Squad 2 Update!

multi-melta-conversion

Very quick update on one member of my piecemeal project – my converted multi-melta wielding Tactical Squad Space Marine. Truth is, there aren’t enough multi-meltas going around these days, so I managed to convert one using an old tank-mounted multi-melta barrel and a Grey Knights gatling psilencer – of which I have loads going spare in the bits box. Obviously a lot more painting left to do, but I’m really happy with the conversion result and looking forward to slowly working through his squad.

So, there you go. I’m not idling or neglecting my hobby obligations, but there’s not much to show you in terms of newly completed and painted models just at the moment. As soon as I do have something finished to show you, or a worthwhile wip, you know where to come. Onwards!

Codex Grey Knights is coming, look busy!

Make a bit more space on your book shelves people.

Grey Knights then. Well, I can’t say I saw that coming so soon but then apparently no-one saw that coming at all so at least I’m not alone in my surprise. It’s yet another sign of GW’s serious push to go bigger and better in everything, but I think the community might be suffering from a little release fatigue right now. I know I am.

I am a little annoyed about the impending relaunch of Titan’s finest daemon hunters, but only because my perpetually stretched finances (well, they’re not that bad by normal standards, but with a minor plastic crack addiction, they’re never healthy enough). Another new Codex to buy. Actually no, I also need to buy a data slate now for my assassins and that annoys me a touch too. However, I get why they did that. The soon-to-be-obsolete book wasn’t really a Grey Knights Codex. It was Daemon Hunters with a different name. The Officio Assassinorum and Inquisitors deserve their own texts, though I’m intrigued to see if this makes the Grey Knights book a little light.

Callidus Assassin

But so hot on the heels of the Space Poodles? It’s like the Grey Knights got caught in the wake of Logan’s Viking pod-racer and got swept onto the cover of White Dwarf before they were supposed to do so. I miss the old ‘one month 40k, one month fantasy’ sort of schedules just because that at least gave my wallet a break (kind of). And I would have been a bit peed off were I a fantasy player, but I wonder if the new ‘Kislev’s Death/Nagash Rises’ thing took them a little longer than they thought to get everything ready for. Also, seeing some of those new ‘Necrawesome’ (a word I totally just made up) models should make the bows n’ arrows brigade a little happier. And how nice it must be to have narrative advancements…

I’m digressing though. The GK release does make sense in another way, in that it pushes on the Sanctus Reach storyline, and I like that. It’s a good example of Games Workshop being able to do this more quickly, and push/develop narrative rather than get caught in an unending cycle of predictable rereleases, and, as mentioned, I like that.

Now, onto the hopes and dreams and fears for the book. As already stated, Inquisitors and Assassins being out (if those rumours turn out to be true), I get. From a fluff perspective, I get it. Grey Knights aren’t short of good units, and they’re not missing anything (thanks to allies and detachments and what have you), though it’ll be curious to see if they get access to the Space Marine anti-aircraft tanks (Stalker with psybolt ammo? Yes, please). From what we’ve seen, there aren’t going to be any new kits in wave one at least, merely a repackaging of existing units. I’m a little disappointed that there isn’t something big and shiny coming straight off the bat, but I totally get the repacking. GW wants people to have more options than just the three or four basic kits they have on the shelves, plus a load of Space Marine stuff. It will make them look like a proper army in that sense. Besides, these days, I wouldn’t put it past the chaps in Nottingham to pull something crazy out of the bag.

What I’d like to see change? Not a great deal. It’s a solid book which, though once upon a time seriously over-powered has weathered the power creep of newer armies and edition changes well enough with out nose-diving down the rankings. As a fan of his fluff and his look, I’d like to see Castellan Crowe get a bit better (stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself) especially by making him an Independent Character, but really, I’d just like to see everything brought into 7th with clearer rules etc. Maybe also some Knights, but as these might end up being called Grey Knights Titan Knight Titans, I’d totally get it if they didn’t – it would be rather silly.

Some nice formations would be a winner of course, and that’s kind of a given, and maybe a new clam pack Brotherhood Champion would be awesome too. Some nice, unexpected treat would be excellent but I won’t hold my breath just yet. Something tells me that Nagash has eaten most of the plastic reserves for his undead armies.

Grey Knights Librarian

My biggest fear? Someone said no more Justicar Thawn (but I don’t know if that has been confirmed yet) and that would suck because that’s some badass fluff. And, actually, just the idea of not getting new toys is a big fear. That and the dreaded nerf bat doing some damage are the main worries. And with no Matt Ward to write it anymore…

I’m looking forward to the new Codex. By all accounts, there’s some detailed accounts of the chapter’s founding and I can’t wait to see that. I’m optimistic but, to those concerned at GW I have this closing message…

Piecemeal Projects – An Experiment

Oh, so much to do and so little time. What’s more, as covered at length in previous articles here, so many distractions. Life as a hobbyist would be so much easier if we all had several pairs of eyes, a few extra limbs, a time machine, limitless bank accounts and a never ending supply of fine sable brushes sprouting from various orifices. If only…

I’m also growing more and more accustomed to doing big shiny pieces and this doesn’t leave a lot of room for the du jour units of the game. The Knights and Contemptors of this world are far too alluring. This makes the idea of sitting down to paint ten basic, run of the mill space marines a little dull. And that’s unfair. I need another Tactical Squad to avoid a Highlander army, and it’s been in my plans for ages to have further tactical squads and rhinos. More than that, an unopened box of these fellows has been sat on my desk for months now. Furthermore, and also previously stated, the new Tactical squad box is a fantastic kit to work with. Lots of options and some faultless sculpting – I should be well up for it.

However, I’m not. I have a dreadnought on the way and tanks and aircraft and walkers and characters to work on. They’re the exciting ones. So, this leads me neatly and with great rambling to the crux of this particular dilemma – how to paint what you need to paint but that you don’t want to paint.

The question, that I’d be delighted if you chimed in on, goes thusly: can you work on projects piecemeal? So, the idea is, that I build the legs and torsos and then base them. The i undercoat those and all the other bits on the sprue, and then, I just leave them until I fancy working on them. Paint a little bit at a time. No rushing, no pressure. Can that work?

painter problems

During the days of building the Contemptor, I maybe get all the basing done. On a busy weekend, maybe I have time to do a few helmets. A couple of pairs of legs in the evenings after work. And when the next big project is underway, I quickly paint all the bolters…

Can this sort of approach work? I’m sure I can get it all done, but will I be able to keep the look tied together, and will it keep my attention and love for the unit going. Time will tell (and this is bound to take a long time), but it’ll be an interesting experiment. I’ll try and get some WIPs posted up here throughout the process. You never know though, I might find myself with a quiet weekend in which case I’ll steamroller through the lot of them. Anyway, at least you know what I’ll be doing with my spare time.

unassembled marines

I guess this counts as a WIP, albeit a rather pathetic one.

Let me know your thoughts. Onwards!
